Good Citizen Claimed by Death- Mrs. Lula Mary Cox Dies At Sarepta
Saturday, Nov. 15- Burial Held At Sarepta.Mrs. Lula Mary Cox, age
97, a native of Calhoun County, passed away at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Noonie Phillips, at Sarepta, where she had lived for
some 40 years, on Saturday, November 15, following a lengthy
illness. Among the oldest living people in Calhoun, she was the
widow of a Confederate veteran, who passed away many years ago.
Mrs. Cox was well known over the county. She was a member of the
Methodist Church, which she joined in early life. Her parents moved
to Mississippi from Virginia, prior to her birth, which took place
on Sept. 11, 1861.
She was the widow of the lamented George W. Cox, who passed away
in 1919.
She was a woman of firm convictions and believed in
right, truth and honesty. She practiced her convictions and belief
during her long life, and was an honored and respected person who
had the good will and appreciation of her neighbors and friends.
She was a loyal and devoted wife and mother, and was active in the affairs of her community as long as her health permitted.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cox were held from Sarepta Baptist
Church Sunday afternoon, Nov. 16, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev.
Buford Roane, assisted by Rev. Buford Usry, with interment in
Sarepta cemetery. Pryor Funeral Home directed the rites. Pallbearers
were Howard Cain, Thomas Freeman, Ray Freeman, Howard Pointer, Hugh
Phillips and Emmett James.
Surviving Mrs. Cox is her daughter,
Mrs. Lula B. Phillips, where she made her home, Sarepta; a son, R.C.
Cowsert, of Memphis, Tenn.; four grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
** One of two families that are represented by three generations
on the quilt. Mrs. Lula Cox was the mother of Mrs. Noonie Phillips
and the grandmother of Mrs. Nina Freeman.
