My mother and I were born in Amory, MS on 9-27-47 and 12-27-47 respectively. We lived in Monroe County until we moved to Oklahoma in 1949. She was Mary Jean Griffin and her father was Willard VanBuren Griffin of Smithville. I am trying to find a marriage record for my gggparents Joseph Willard Griffin and Jane McKnight Shannon. They appear on the 1850 Census for Itawamba County but I have been lead to believe that they may have been married in Monroe County prior to 1837. Thanks in advance for any help. My family came from the Sims Settlement in Limestone Co AL. My ggg grandparents were Parrish and Kezziah Sims. Kezziah married Hon. Ovid P Brown in Columbus MS. My gg grandparents were William Sims and Rachel Walker and g grandparents were Benjamin F Sims and Mary McClendon whose parents were Charles McClendon and Fanny Eddins. All of Columbus or vicinity. In "Southern-Born and Bred" it states that Benjamin F Sims was the first sheriff of Monroe Co MS. The children of Benjamin and Mary were Minnie who married Steward Brazelman Pipkin, Milton, Sprat who married Narcissus and my grandfather Columbus Randolph Sims. Whatever information anyone may have related to these families would be so appreciated.

Looking for Henry James, one of his wives was named Burnett. He came to Monroe County about 1821 from Pitt County NC or Roane Co. TN, and died in Monroe Co.,MS about 1829. He was a widower when he came to Monroe Co. in 1821. His children became wards of several different families, one of whom was a Bennett. some of his children moved to Leon and Madison Co. Tx where there still are some of their descendents living. Henry had one know Brother Robert who was the father of Frank and Jesse James the outlaws. I believe he may have also had two other brothers Wm. and Benjamin who married Martha McComb,, these last two men are unconfirmed. Janet Shapiro shapiro@stic.net I just obtained the marriage license for my gg-aunt. Annie Pauline Miles married John R. Ledbetter on 31 Jan 1892 in Lamar Co. AL. John was from Lee Co. MS and Annie was last found in Tishmingo Co. MS in 1880 census. Don't know why they went to Lamar Co. to get married. The license states they have Annie's mother's permission to wed. She was Martha Miles, a widow. On the license is Gattman, Miss and the date 1 Feb 1892. The license also is from the Lamar County Probate Court. I have been trying to find Martha Miles for 10 years. Was she living in Gattman, Monroe Co? Does anyone know why the marriage license would be filed in Probate Court? The marriage took place at the home of R.W. Abernathy. Anyone know of this family? If anyone has access to cemetery records in Gattman, would they please check for Martha Miles, born abt 1850.

Mary ELLIOTT was b. abt. 1853. She had two sisters, one named Ada G. who was much younger (b. 1870/71). Their parents may have owned some land in Jackson, MS. In 1873 Mary Elliot and James Parden VICKERY (b. 1849 Winfield, AL) applied for a marriage license at Aberdeen on 18 May 1873. They resided in Cotton Gin MS and appear in the 1880 Monroe Co. Census. Offspring: 1) Thomas Elisha Vickery, b. 1875 MS 2) Alice Retha Vickery, b. 1877 MS 3) George M. Vickery, b. 1879 MS 4) James Walter Vickery, b. 1882 MS Later the Vickerys moved to VanZandt Co. Texas. Any information, particulary on the parents or siblings of the ELLIOTT family will be greatly appreciated. Ada was residing in the Vickery household in 1880.

I am searching for the parents of my gggreat grandmother, Eliza Gholson. She was born abt 1810 in KY but moved to Monroe Co. where she married Stephen Edmonds Thompson (b 1802 TN) abt 1827. They had six children, Minerva, Serena, Betsy, John, James and William Henry. Eliza died bef 1845 in Monroe Co. Stephen remarried to Phebe Bayless and moved the family west to Smith Co, TX in a large migration of Thompson's and other families. Her brother, William Gholson, remained in Monroe Co. with his wife, Nancy Thompson. There is some speculation they were related to Gen Samuel Gholson of Aberdeen, but we have found no proof, nor have we found the parents of Samuel. If anyone can offer a clue to this puzzle, I would appreciate the help.

Looking for info re Charles Partin/Parton/Parten who lived in Monroe County during the 1850's and I do not know how long before. His wife was Ruth Cook(e), both born about 1797 in NC. Charles died in 1854 and left property to the children of Bennett Partin, in NC; I think Bennett was his brother, not certain. Bennett also spent several years in Monroe Co., from 1854 to about 1860. Hi, I'm looking for any info on an Isaac R. Dykes who shows up on the 1830 Monroe Co.,Ms. census with 1 wm 10-20; 1 wm 20-40; 1 wm 40-60; 3 wf 10-20 and 1 wf 40-60. I don't know anything else out about this Isaac,but really do need to know more. I would appreciate any and all help or advice on this. Thanks, Dawn
