GATES, VASSER
I work at a museum and am seeking information to confirm the first names
and any other details pertaining to the murder of a Mr. Gates by a Mr.
Vasser which occured on Decmber 24 or 25th, 1848, apparently in Aberdeen.
The men were at a friend's party when Mr. Gates threatened the life of
Mr. Vasser over a "mere trifle." When Mr. Gates returned to carry out
his threat against Mr. Vasser, he was instead shot by Vasser and died on
Christmas morning.

FRAZIER, GREEN, WELLS, LAKEY/LEAKEY
I am looking for family of Thomas K. FRAZIER. He was born in Jefferson County,
Alabama in 1833 and moved with his family to Mississippi as a young child. He was
one of 12 children. He married Rhoda P. GREEN in 1852 and she gave him one son,
George N. FRAZIER, before her death in 1858. He then married Sarah A. WELLS, widow
of LEAKEY or LAKEY, in 1859 and she bore him 8 children, 2 of whom died
in infancy. They lived in Monroe County at least between 1860-1870,
according to the census. He then moved his family to Arkansas, sometime
prior to 1874.
Family lore indicates Thomas may have had some Cherokee blood. A
biography written in 1892 in Arkansas, indicates only 3 of his 11
siblings were still living at that time. Any information regarding his
parents or siblings would be GREATLY appreciated.

Frazier, Green, Wells,
Lakey
I am looking for anyone who has any information
on Fraziers in Monroe County between 1840 and 1874. My great-
greatgrandfather was Thomas K. Frazier, born in 1833 in Alabama. He was
one of 12 children and moved with his parents to Mississippi "at an early
age." His father was born in North Carolina and his mother in Alabama.
Thomas is listed on the census in Monroe County for 1860 and 1870. He
had a son born in Arkansas in 1874, so had moved from Mississippi prior
to that time. Thomas married Rhoda P. Green in Mississippi in February
1852 and had 2 children with her; George N. and one which "died in
infancy." Since Rhoda herself died in 1858, it is reasonable to assume
she died in childbirth and the child along with her. Thomas married
Sarah A. Wells (Lakey) in 1859. Sarah had been married before and had a
son named George C. Lakey. Sarah gave Thomas 8 more children; Thomas M.,
Joseph Riley, Sarah, Minerva Jane Ella, John Will, Emily or Emma C. and
Mary E. (twins), and James. Minerva was the last child born in
Mississippi. If any of these names sound familiar, I would sure
appreciate being notified. E-Mail is NoraEP@aol.com. Beth Pittman

BAILEY PEEBLES
I would like to announce that the Diary of Celia L. E. C. Peebles Bailey
has now been posted on the Internet via the
CHOCTAW COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, USGENWEB SITE at the following address:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mschocta/celiapeeblesdiary.html
Celia L. E. C. Peebles Bailey was the wife of William R. Bailey. Celia
Peebles father was James Peebles, and her uncle was
Alpha Peebles. William R. Bailey and Alpha Peebles were among the first
of the pioneer settlers of Old Choctaw County. Celia
Peebles Bailey, William R. Bailey, and Alpha Peebles are all buried at
the Peebles Cemetery in present day Webster County,
Mississippi.
The PEEBLES CEMETERY roster and headstone photographs are also available
for viewing via the WEBSTER COUNTY,
MISSISSIPPI USGENWEB site at the following address:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mswebst2/peebles.html
The PEEBLES FAMILY migrated from Guildford County, North Carolina to
Mississippi.
The BAILEY FAMILY migrated from Abbeville, South Carolina to Mississippi.
Celia L. E. C. Peebles Bailey’s Diary was written in 1851 and offers a
rare glimpse into the daily lives of our brave early
pioneer ancestors who settled in Mississippi. The Diary also contains
Trading Post Journal entries from 1835 forward. William
R. Bailey and Celia Peebles Bailey owned and operated one of the first
trading posts in Old Choctaw County that was located
on their land grant just east of present day Stewart, Mississippi, in
present day Montgomery County.
Celia Peebles Bailey’s Diary was photographed and transcribed in 1979 by
Mr. William Waylon Jacks. Celia’s Diary formed
the basis of the early history of the Stewart, Mississippi area that Mr.
Jacks documented in his important book, “Stewart: A
Town to Remember”.
I encourage all to read this important diary. Celia Peebles Bailey
recorded and mentioned many of the names of the early
pioneer families that settled in the area that eventually would become
Stewart, Mississippi. Many of these pioneer families came
from North Carolina and South Carolina.
Many of these early families that settled in Choctaw County, Mississippi,
eventually moved on to other counties in the state or to
other areas in the south.
I would like to personally thank the following people that made this
publication of Celia L. E. C. Peebles Bailey’s Diary
possible:
Mildred Earline Wood Bailey, for retyping the original transcription by
Mr. William Waylon Jacks.
Gene Marie Grainer Bailey, for editing this edition of Mr. William Waylon
Jacks’ transcription.
Jackie Rhodes, for her encouragement and support and work to place this
important manuscript on the Internet.
And, most importantly, Mr. William Waylon Jacks, for his tireless
dedication to the preservation of history, and, specifically, for
finding and transcribing this Diary. Shortly after he finished his work
on the transcription, the home of the owner of the diary,
Mr. Claude Herard, a grandson of William R. and Celia Bailey, burned and
the diary was lost forever. If it had not been for Mr.
Jacks’ efforts, the earliest known history of our pioneer ancestors in
this part of Mississippi would have been forever lost.

CURNUTT/CORNUTT/CORNETT
I've returned to the Queries for Monroe County, as there were no responses
to a previous Look Up request...and both the Dept. of Vital Records and the Dept
of Archives and History were of little help. The Dept of Archives, for $15 will
look up Census data, which is availiable online. Moving right along...my ggf,
Walter Alvis CURNUTT and his father James Harris CORNUTT are who I am
trying to verify data on. Walter was, according to my data, born Sept
18, 1856 in Aberdeen, his father James on Feb. 18, 1826. I have some
data on about 10 children of James CORNUTT and his wife Mary Ann Francis
CHISOLM, which I would be happy to share. Keeping in mind that all of it
is, as yet, undocumented. I can supply what I have in GEDCOM or as an
attachment, or snail mail. I really do need a little help with finding
where old James came from....I suspect TN...but no documention or links.

ROWLAND, ROLAND, ROLLAND, ROLLEN,
ROLLIN, REYNOLDS
I am looking for early records, census, historical society, etc. for ancestors
of the first Director of the Mississippi Department of Antiquities and History,
Dr. Dunbar Rowland. In limited mention of his background, Dr. Rowland indicated
that his family entered MS from VA.
It is believed his father was Creed T. Rowland. His uncle was P. W.
Rowland.
I quote from Dunbar Rowland, The present county seat (of Monroe County)
is the attractive and pleasant city of Aberdeen, which has long been a
center or culture, and has given to the State many men and women noted
for special accomplishments in many fields of effort.
It has been said of Aberdeen (Monroe Co.) in the past that it was one
place in which money alone could not purchase a place in society. Among
its first settlers were the Rowlands and Sykes who settled in the village
when it was still close to the river. Colonel Rowland later removed to a
plantation close by— the two families pioneered together from Virginia to
the State of Mississippi. Notice Dunbar Rowland describes this man as
Colonel Rowland, who lived on a plantation.Note Dunbar Rowland also
mentions that his uncle, Dr. P. W. Rowland, was a member of the Eleventh
Mississippi Regiment, which was led by Col. Reuben O. Reynolds of
Aberdeen, Monroe County, MS. This would mean his uncle was at least 18-
21 years old during the WBS. If Dr. P. W. Rowland was his Uncle, how old
was he in 1850-1860. Maybe the "W." in P. W., stood for William, maybe
the name was Peter William Rowland?
Looking for any information on Roland, Rollin, Rolen, Rolland, etc. And
information on Reuben O. Reynolds.
