CURNUTT/CORNUTT
Like many, I've a brick wall, well several, but the one in question is my
great great grandfather James Harris CURNUTT.
The dismal amount of data I have has come from family. According to them,
James and his wife Mary Ann Francis CHISHOLM/CHISOLM lived near you in
Monroe County. And that is as far back as I can locate ANY data on James.
I did find a James Harris in TN, but it was the wrong one, and a weak
faint lead in VA, which I'm still working on.
According to the family a number of their children were born in Aberdeen,
Monroe County;
Walter Alvis in 1856(my g/gf )
Thomas Pleasant in 1858
James L. in 1860
Edward T. in 1863
Jasper Newton in 1865
and Emma in 1867.
Apparently James moved to Arkansas after Emmas birth as the next child,
William was born there in 1871.
In Ancestry.com I found a J.H. CURNUTT listed in the 1853 MS State Census
of Itawamba County, ID# MS0542986. I've been unable to locate this Census
data to check if it might be MY James.
I've a bit more data on the above individuals if it might be of help to
someone. Of course if the Monroe County Genealogy or Historical
Societies might be interested, they would certainly be welcome to what I
do have. Then too, should anyone have any data I might use it would be
welcome.

WHITE
Looking for information on my grandfather William E. White born approximately
1873 in Aberdeen, MS, died and buried in Wewoka, OK in 1920. William E. White
worked as a printer. His father's name is unknown, but an obit for
William E. White found in Seminole Oklahoma City Library states that his
father was a printer also. According to my father, Riley Eugene White,
born June 14, 1912 in DeQueen, AR and died August 16, 1985 in Tahlequah,
OK, we are related to Hugh Lawson White, former governor of MS. My
father was also related to surname BILBO. There was a MS governor Bilbo
in 1920's also? I know Hugh Lawson White had a brother William, but
middle initials are different. Also, they resided in McComb County, MS,
so I am not sure how we are linked, but I am hoping to be able to obtain
a birth certificate or some other information to further establish the
link to other Whites in Mississippi. Anyone with information, please
email me at dewdrs@hotmail.com. PS. I am planning on visiting Aberdeen
in early July 2001 to check local newspaper archives. I figure that
working as a printer, my ggrandfather would have worked for a local
newspaper.

PICKLE, NASH, LITTLE
BURNETT, HOWELL, JOHNSON, ODOM,
SMITH, TAYLOR, WEST, WILSON
ROWLAND, ROLAND, ROLLIN, SYKES
I am looking for the historical family of a
famous Mississippian. His name is Dunbar Rowland. The following
information is all I have on him and his family. Dunbar was the first
State Historian of Mississippi.
Although I am a Rowland on my mothers side, I have no sure way to know if
I am related to the Dunbar Rowland family. I believe his history can be
found in the census records of Lowndes, Monroe, Chickasaw, Pontotoc,
Calhoun, Yalabousha, Lafayette, Quitman and Tallahatchie Counties.
If any one can help here is the information that I have.
Thanks, Ron Hughes
The great grandfather of Dunbar Rowland is believed to be Michael Rowland
of VA. The family is believed to have lived in Henry and Pittsylvania
Counties VA.
Notes for Michael Rowland:
Ref: Dunbar Rowland, volume 3:708. He (Michael) served in the
Revolutionary war and took part in the Battle of Guilford Court House.
Ref: Virginia Magazine of History and Biography 27:279-80, 1913.
"Henry Country Marriage Bonds" Henry Co. was formed in 1770, it lists a
marriage of John Rowland, Jr. to Eunis Sturgeon 7/23/1780. Lineage is
given in DAR Lineage Book, Vol. 75, p. 84, in papers of Miss Mary
Victoria Rowland. It appears that part of Henry County, was a part of
Pittsylvania County at one time. Found listed in the 1800 Tax list of
Henry Co., (see reference under Baldwin Rowland). According to Dora
Kemmell of Beaber, KY, The family moved from Henry Co., VA to Lee Co., TN
before 1820.
Children of Michael Rowland and Elizabeth Hairston were:
I. Creed "Taylor" Rowland, born abt. 1795 in Henry Co., died 1866 in
Aberdeen, Mississippi."
Creed "Taylor" (my quotes) Rowland, presents a strange story in the
Rowland family ancestry. Was his name Creed "Taylor" or Creed "Thomas"
Rowland? I will discuss this in another segment.
Children of Michael Rowland, continued.
ii. William Rowland, b. abt. 1779, Henry Co., married Milly Radford 28
Sept., 1801. (He may have moved to Mississippi.
RLH)
iii. Jane Rowland, b. 1801 VA, died 1875 in Wayne Co., Kentucky.
The following are the children of Michael Rowland and Elizabeth Hairston
Rowland. I am taking the reader from Virginia to Mississippi.
1. Creed Taylor Rowland, b. abt. 1795 in Henry Co., VA. On 16 June,
1820, he married Matilda Brewer.
According to researchers of the family of Dunbar Rowland, who is the
first official historian of Mississippi and the author of the two volume
reference book entitled "MISSISSIPPI THE HEART OF THE SOUTH",
"Mississippi" (note that his wife also wrote history books); and other
Rowland descendants in Mississippi, Creed Thomas Rowland was according to
them, Creed Taylor Rowland.
In their story, Creed Taylor Rowland moved to Mississippi about 1840 and
settled in Lowndes Co., (note, Lowndes Co., is located just South of
Monroe Co.)
They moved a few years later to Aberdeen, Monroe Co., MS and lived there
on their plantation "Rowland Place" until Creed's death in 1866.
This family also shows the birth of Creed "Taylor" Rowland, Jr.. They
list him as born about 1821 in Henry Co., VA. He married Emoline Smith,
instead of Emaline Smith.
The other child known of Creed Taylor and Matilda (Brewer) Rowland was;
2.William Rowland, born about 1825 in VA, and died 1870 in Oakland,
Yalobusha Co., MS. IE. William Brewer Rowland. He married Mary Judith
Bryan in 1848, probably in Mississippi. Mary Judith Bryan is believed to
be a descendant of the Moorman, Clark and Alexander families of Virginia.
My note; since Creed T. Rowland, Jr. was born in about 1821, it is
possible he was grown when his mother, father and little brother, moved
to Mississippi. If they moved in the late 1830's or the early 1840's, as
is reported, then he would have been 19-22 years old at that time, plenty
old enough to have fallen in love, married and remained behind in VA.
Or, maybe, he left the family during the trip, etc. RLH 1999.
He obviously did not remain single very long since his first child is
reported born in 1843.
Children of William Brewer Rowland and Mary Judith Bryan Rowland were;
1. Dunbar Rowland, b. August 25, 1864, in Oakland, Yalobusha Co., MS, he
died on November 1, 1937 in Jackson, Hinds
Co., MS. He married Eron Opha Moore, Dec. 20,
19?
Notes on Dunbar Rowland; Virkus, op. cit. Eron Opha Moore, the wife of
Dr. Dunbar Rowland, was first married to Mr. Gregory. She is the
daughter of Maj. Benjamin B. Moore and Ruth Stovall Rowland.
Eron Rowland was also a historian.
It is possible some of the Rowland family buried in the Cascilla Cemetery
in Tallahatchie Co., MS which is a few miles South of Oakland, which is
in Yalobusha Co., near Charleston.
In Tallahatchie Co., MS, the community of "Cascilla", is a Rowand
Cemetery. In this cemetery are found the burials of the following
Rowlands;
Edna Rowland Styrk, b. 1801, d. 1848- may be Aunt of James S. Rowland.
John P. Rowland, b. 5/20/1844, d. 7/15/1878 -the son of James S. and
Eldna H. Rowland
W. T. Rowland, b. 4/22/1857, d. 2/23/1893 - the son of James S. and Eldna
H. Rowland
James H. Rowland, no dates- Co. G, 2nd Miss. Cavalry Reserves, CSA - Mid.
Initial is probably mothers middle name. Note another "Co. G"!
Benjamine Thomas Rowland, b. 8/22/1853, d. 2/24/1914-is this Ben, Sr.?
Avis Fonda Rowland, b. 2/25/1861, d. 10/28/1931- the wife of Benjamine T.
Rowland
Rowland, infant, 1880, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Rowland, Sr.
Rowland, infant, 1894, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Rowland, Sr.
James F. Rowland, b. 1881, d. 1942
Addie Wiggins Rowland, b. 6/10/1888, d. 12/23/1924- (prob. The wife of
one of the sons above)
Rowland, Susie C., b. 1902, d. 1942 (probably the wife of one of the sons
above)
Edna Rowland Roberson, b. 1850, d. 1923- (prob., the daughter of James S.
and Eldna H. Rowland)
Georgia Benjamine Rowland Burnette, b. 1879, d. 1936.
Looks like the family of James S. and Eldna H. Rowland.
Dr. Dunbar Rowland was the writer of the book "The History of
Mississippi", he was the founder and Director of the Mississippi
Department of Archives and History, from March 15, 1902-1937. He gave
very little information on his family background. He practiced law in
Memphis, Tennessee, 1888-1893.
Children of William Brewer Rowland, continued.
2. Creed Walker Rowland, b. Nov. 25, 1862 MS, d. 1922 in MS.
3. Robert Walker Rowland, b. July 25, 1855 MS, d. 1923 MS.
4. Peter Whitman Rowland, b. Feb. 25, 1861 MS, d. October 15, 1953 in
Oxford, LaFayette Co., MS
5. William Buford Rowland, b. abt. 1850 MS, d. 1880 MS.
Dunbar Rowland gives a few clues to his family background in his
writings. He mentions the following information in describing the
history of various counties in his books.
1. Col. Rowland, pioneered from Virginia to Monroe Co., MS, with the
Sykes family. Col. Rowland later moved outside of Aberdeen, MS to a
plantation. This should be William Brewer Rowland or Creed Taylor /
Thomas Rowland?
2. Dr. W. B. Rowland, was one of the earliest settlers of Oakland,
Yalobusha County, Mississippi. Is this also William Brewer Rowland?
3. Dr. P. W. Rowland, is mentioned as one of his uncles. Dr. P. W.
Rowland fought for the C.S.A. in the 11th Mississippi Infantry Regiment
of Monroe Co., Mississippi. This must be Peter Whitman Rowland!
(Dunbar Rowland)Vol II, p. 793, Samuel Ragsdale was the Sheriff of Monroe
County, Mississippi in the period of 1822-1827. And, I quote from Dunbar
Rowland,
The present county seat (of Monroe County) is the attractive and pleasant
city of Aberdeen, which has long been a center or culture, and has given
to the State many men and women noted for special accomplishments in many
fields of effort.
It has been said of Aberdeen (Monroe Co.) in the past that it was one
place in which money alone could not purchase a place in society.
Among its first settlers were the Rowlands and Sykes who settled in the
village when it was still close to the river. Colonel Rowland later
removed to a plantation close by— the two families pioneered together
from Virginia to the State of Mississippi.
It should also be noted that Monroe County is the oldest county in the
Indian lands of North Mississippi. It was, originally, located on the
Alabama line, and was formed about 1817 when Mississippi became a state.
In 1820, it comprised part of the land of present day Monroe Co., and
part of the land of present day Lowndes County. After the Chickasaw
Cession of 1837 the boundries of all the "old" counties were established.
Monroe Co., by 1840, adjoined Lowndes Co., in the South, Chicksaw Co., in
the West, and Itawamba Co., in the North. Alabama's, Marion County
bordered on the East.
Dr. Dunbar Rowland goes on the describe early Yalobusha County, A few of
the earliest settlers of Oakland, a pleasant little town in the western
portion of the county, besides those above mentioned, were.... Dr. W. B.
Rowland...... Could this not be William B. Rowland? RLH-2001
Note that Yalobusha County was located halfway between Monroe Co., and
Bolivar Co., MS. All the areas settled by what is believed to be parts
of the Dunbar Rowland family are located about 85 to 100 miles South of
Walnut, MS.
In Bolivar County, Bolivar County was early settled by an excellent body
of pioneers..... Among them were ....Dr. Marrel Rowland. By this
mention, there exists a chance that Dr. Marrell Rowland may have also
been a relative of Dunbar Rowland. Although it is reported that Dr.
Dunbar Rowland wrote very little on his family ancestry, it appears that
he constantly mentioned Rowland names when discussing the history of
Mississippi counties, when these counties appear to parallel the movement
of his family across Mississippi. RLH-2001.
There will be a long discourse on the name Murel, Morrell, Marrel, Etc.,
later in this report. RLH-2000. Bolivar County was located on the
Mississippi River and was the second largest county in Mississippi, after
Washington Co., in 1840
Note Dunbar Rowland also mentions that his uncle, Dr. P. W. Rowland, was
a member of the Eleventh Mississippi Regiment, which was led by Col.
Reuben O. Reynolds of Aberdeen, Monroe County. (Note, there is a listing
of "Seaburn Rowland", in 1838 Lamar Co., Al.)
Thanks for any help, I think a look at the 1840 and 1850 Census records
of Lowndes and Monroe Counties for the Rowland and Sykes families may
bring some results.
