BROWN, JOHNSON posted by Sue Howard on Friday, October 9, 1998

The last time I posted back in 1997, I did not know the name of my great grandmother. Since that time I have found the name to be Mary Undine BROWN. She married my great grandfather, Joseph Abner JOHNSON. I have not been able to find anything about their background - who their parents were, where they all came from originally, etc. They were supposedly born in Alabama, but a story that was told in my family was that the two Johnson boys who left Pontotoc Co. and went to Neshoba Co. were my grandfather and his brother, Jim "Mack" Johnson. Any help will be much appreciated. Mary was born in 1842 and I'm not sure about Joseph - maybe 1837-1841.

He is listed in the 1850 Pontotoc census along with with May (Mitchell?) and children Budd (age 5), Franklin (age 4) and twins Edgar and Egbert (age 1 month). Samuel listed his occupation as "teacher". Can't find anything on these folks either before or after 1850 until Franklin shows up as an underage enlistee in the Civil War from Arkansas. Family rumor has it that May died shortly after the twins were born and at least one of the babies was given to "Aunt Mary Todd" to raise. We are desperate for any clue to help us solve this mystery!
