Robert Masten Holmes, born in Kemper County in 1844, was a member of Company I with General Braxton Bragg. Captured in the Battle of Chickamauga Creek, he died in a prison camp in 1864. His diary was found in the attic of Christine Holmes Bates. The diary, published in 1973, is entitled Kemper Rebel.
