The Blue Family in Calhoun County, Mississippi
James Young
Many of the people in Calhoun County with connections to the
Blue family are related to the "Bridge" Blue family. The "Bridge"
Blue name came from the branch of the Blue family which settled near
Blue's Bridge (which was later called Coleman's Bridge and then
Graham's Bridge) on Drowning Creek in Moore County, North Carolina,
around the year 1803. This branch of the family started with Angus
BLUE (1733-1823). He was born in Scotland, apparently a native of
the Isle of Jura in Argyllshire. His wife Flora was also born in
Scotland. Both are buried at the Old Bethesda Presbyterian Cemetery,
Aberdeen, Moore County, NC.
An excellent web site which
provided information about the Bridge Blue family and which listed
hundreds of individuals who are descended from Angus Blue was
created by Joseph E. Blue, Ph.D. It contained information that Dr.
Blue had gathered as well as information provided to him by William
H. Blue. Dr. Blue was a world-renowned authority in the field of
underwater acoustics. After his death in Orlando, Florida, on
January 7, 2005, his Bridge Blue Family web site was discontinued.
However, the information that was on that site is still
available. James (Jim) Young, youngjmy@cox.net, has a copy of the
original Bridge Blue Family web site file (updated through 2000.)
William H. Blue has compiled a massive listing of Blue family
descendants in North America. One of his files is called the "S6"
file because the numbering system that he uses assigned that number
to the Bridge Blue family line. Mr. Blue provided a copy of the "S6"
file to Jim Young. This file has been updated since Dr. Blue's web
site was discontinued.
Mr. Blue told Jim Young: "You may
certainly share my S6 file or refer anyone to my email address.
However, one note of caution. Some people feel that information
about living persons should not be posted on the Internet. So, we
honor those wishes on the National Blue Family Assn. website by
posting only the [earlier] generations". He also gave permission to
list his email address for those who may be interested in the Blue
family. That address is whmblue@comcast.net.
As of October
2006, Mr. Blue continues to be active in the National Blue Family
Association. The association's web site, The National Blue Family
Association Web Site, at:
http://members.tripod.com/blue_family/index.htm is an excellent
resource for those researching the Blue family.
If you are
interested in the Bridge Blue family, please contact Jim Young
(youngjmy@cox.net) or William H. (Bill) Blue (whmblue@comcast.net).
Partial Listing of the Calhoun County Bridge Blue Family
Daniel BLUE, Jr. (1806-1889), the son of Daniel BLUE, Sr., and the
grandson of Angus BLUE, married Mary GRAHAM (1806-1876). They
migrated from North Carolina to Mississippi about 1840 and they
purchased 1280 acres of land. 160 acres of the land is listed in the
land records as being purchased by Daniel Blew.
They were
living in Chickasaw Co. MS in 1850 and in Calhoun Co. MS in 1860.
This does not necessarily indicate a move, for Calhoun Co. was
formed from a part of Chickasaw Co.
The following extract
from the Bridge Blue files contains the first few generations of the
descendants of Daniel BLUE, Jr., and Mary Graham BLUE. The complete
file contains a listing of names down to the sixth and seventh
generations.
The numbering format used here was adopted by
Joseph E. Blue from the Blue files of William H. Blue. By counting
the number of numbers between the dots you can tell the generation
to which the descendant belongs. An asterisk between the end of the
descendant's number and his/her name indicates that more information
about that individual appears in the next generation's section.
The references are to footnotes in the original Bridge Blue
Family file.

FIRST GENERATION of the Bridge Blues
---------------------------------------
S6. Angus BLUE (1733-June
15, 1823), m. Flora _____ (1746-March 29, 1827). He was born in
Scotland, apparently a native of the Isle of Jura in Argyllshire.
Flora also was born in Scotland and died in Moore Co. NC. They came
to NC ca 1803, and settled near Blue's Bridge on Drowning Creek in
Moore Co. Both are buried at the Old Bethesda Presbyterian Cemetery,
Aberdeen, Moore Co. Angus wrote a will, dated 28 Aug 1818, which is
on file at the Moore Co. Courthouse. This Blue family was said to be
'rough' and were sometimes called the 'CUSSING BLUES', to
distinguish them from the [other][S1.] and [S4.] Blue families who
were all staid Presbyterians. They were great moneymakers and keen
traders. Reference B16 says he died 1828, age 90. This may be a case
of someone confusing a '3' and an '8' on the gravestone.

(1 Sep 1806, NC, d. 22 Sep 1876, MS, bur. Blue Cemetery).They both
were born in NC. In about 1840 they migrated to MS where he
purchased 1280 acres of land. Part of the land (160 acres) is the
land records listed as Daniel Blew. They were living in Chickasaw
Co. MS in 1850 and in Calhoun Co. MS in 1860. This does not
necessarily indicate a move, for Calhoun Co. was formed partly from
Chickasaw Co. in 1852. Daniel's granddaughter, Martha Kellum (1880
census), lived with Daniel after Mary died. Daniel was the first
postmaster at Erin in Chickasaw Co. Daniel gave the land that was
later donated for Young's Chapel to his daughter, Sarah ("Sallie")
who married Thomas W. Young, son of Thomas Jefferson Young who was
the first pastor of Young's Chapel. A story passed down in the
family is that Daniel died one night after eating a large bucket of
plums that his grandchildren had gathered that day.
