The Story of Black Jack Bethel Church : Page 818th verse, "And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?" Brother Walne, at the two o'clock service, preached from Psalm 85, verse six. "Wilt thou not revive us again, that thy people may rejoice in thee?" Wednesday at two o'clock Brother Walne chose Act 26th Chapter, verse 28. "Ther Agrippa said unto Paul, almost thou petsuadest ? to be a Christian." October 25th 1862--One member was received by experience. A motion was made to call a pastor for 1863. Brother G. J. Walne was unanimously elected, and motion was made to present him with a certificate that he had been, and was, the pastor of Bethel Church. December 23rd 1862--In this last conference of the year, Brother Walne asked for, and received, a two month leave of absence. Miss Ida Gilly was granted a letter of dismission. March 23rd 1863--A letter of dismission was given to Marthena Bunch. April 25th 1863--After preaching by Brother Walne the church met in conference - minutes read and adopted. The church resolved to celebrate the Lords Supper the next day. The clerk James Meek tendered his resignation and J. F. Heard was elected to fill that position. Mr. Heard had been acting as clerk pro tem for a number of months. May 23rd 1863--The senister and threatening notation that said it all. "No preaching in consequence of Brother Walne's being surrounded by the enemy This was not signed, as usual, but the writing was unmistakably Mr. Heard. June 27th 1863--This was the last conference of the year - at least whe e minutes were kept - the only business being that Sister Ann Daniels asked for and received a letter of dismission. June 1864--Two new members were received by letter - no names given. August 4, 1864--Two more members received by letter. January 22nd 1865--After prayer and singing the church again called Brother H. W. Portwood to serve as pastor for the year. The call was accepted. May 28th 1865--The Lords Supper was celebrated and one was received by experience. |
