According to some notes by Irion Bate or Charles Leslie Duke, John Frederick Duke left Kemper Co., Mississippi after the Civil War and moved his family to Denning, San Augustine County, Texas.
A short time later the family moved to Kaufman Co., Texas. They tried to farm, but did not know how to farm in the blackland. During the winter of 1870-1871 both John Frederick and his wife Cynthia died and were buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Kaufman Co., 3 miles NW of Wills Point and about 3 miles NE of Elmo.
