Mendenhall is a small city in Simpson County, located in the central part of the state. It serves as the county seat and has a rich history tied to the development of the region, agriculture, transportation, and community growth.

The area that would become Mendenhall was originally inhabited by Native American tribes before European settlers arrived in the 19th century. The land was primarily used for farming, with settlers cultivating cotton, corn, and other crops. The establishment of the railroad in the late 1800s helped bring more settlers and economic opportunities to the region.

Mendenhall was officially incorporated in 1900 and named after Thomas L. Mendenhall, a local judge. The town quickly became a hub for commerce and trade in Simpson County.

During the early 20th century, Mendenhall grew as a center for agriculture and small businesses. Cotton and timber were significant industries, and the railroad played a crucial role in transporting goods and people. The town also became a focal point for government activities as the county seat.

In the mid-20th century, Mendenhall, like much of the South, experienced changes due to the civil rights movement. The town, like others in Mississippi, saw social and political shifts as integration and voting rights became central issues.

Today, Mendenhall remains a small but vibrant community with a focus on education, local businesses, and preserving its historical roots. The city hosts community events, and its location along U.S. Highway 49 makes it a key stop between Jackson and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Mendenhall’s historic courthouse, built in 1907, is a notable landmark and reflects the town's rich heritage. The town also supports local arts and culture, with theaters and community groups promoting creative expression.

Mendenhall has evolved from a small agricultural settlement into a modern town that retains its historical charm. It continues to be a significant part of Simpson County, balancing its past with ongoing development and community engagement.

Mendenhall is located in Simpson County on U.S. Hwy 49 about 33 miles south of Jackson and 58 miles north of Hattiesburg.
