Kilpatrick Cemetery

Submitted by Rose Diamond

Southeastern Calhoun CountyTownship 22 North, Range 10 East, Section 24This is a very old cemetery located in a cedar and hardwood grove on top of a bluff. The latest marker found was 1927 but it is possible that someone was buried there as late as 1947.

The Cooper family owns the land. They said that the graves on the south side were black and the graves on the north side were white.

The first marker on the south corner is:
Theoder Williams, born November 23, 1906 and died November 24, 1927

Then there is a heavy metal bar marking a site

Jack, son of Anderson and Jane Williams born April 25, 1875 died March 6, 1896

Then a large sandstone and at least three sunken areas

Margaret McMullen

H. M. McMullen born December 26, 1844, died April 3 1922

then a metal marker shaped like a large tulip

Eliza Jarver/Tarver born 1857 died 1902 Age 43

then a sandstone and at least two more sunken areas

Elizabeth Gore born February 21 1845 died August 8 1847

M. H. Gore born March 27 1809 died June 6 1849

then a lot of sunken spaces

Thomas Benton, son of L. E. Kilpatrick born February 17, 1842 died March 20 1842.

Thomas Benton Kirkpatrick
Again, pardon the terrible photo. This is the Thomas Benton Kilpatrick stone.

This ended the first row with Thomas Kilpatrick being at the furthest north. An estimate is about a 125-150 feet distance from the Williams marker to the Kilpatrick marker.

Angled behind the Kilpatrick grave is:

Annie, wife of T. Kilpatrick age 75

Thomas Kilpatrick died August 21, 1900 age 92 years.

There are numerous sunken areas and sandstones and several Yucca plants.

Angled toward the east, near the southern end of the cemetery is a broken marker that seems to be two names on one stone. If so, on the top {with a masonic symbol} is Dr. A. H. Bailey born January 30, 1827 and died February 22, 1858, on the lower part of the stone is: Edwin O. Bailey, born October 20, 1853 died February 20, 1854.

Coming back toward the Williams grave is a marker for:
Docia D. daughter of G--- da born February 12, 1879 and died June 24, 1908

Unknown

Unreadable Stone

*Note: This section of Calhoun County was formed from Chickasaw County is 1852. The markers prior to 1852 would be older than the official county name.
