Wiley M. POPE, early settler in Kemper County (listed in 1840s tax rolls may be the same person as Wiley Martin POPE (b. 1799 in SC and later lived of Lowndes County, MS), who was the son of Elizabeth (Norris) Pope and the stepson of Ezekiel Nash (widow Elizabeth Norris Pope married Ezekiel Nash in 1801, SC... they later immigrated to MS in 1818 or 1819).

I was looking at the MS Gen Web page in hopes of finding information on my Allen Pope. I am trying to find documentation of the father/son relationship between my 3rd great grandfather, Allen Pope, and his son, my 2nd great grandfather, Jabez Pope. I noticed on the Kemper County First Families page that there was incorrect information about Wiley M. Pope who was another son of Allen's and Jabez's brother. His name was Wiley McKinney Pope. McKinney was great grandmother, Mourning Mckinney's, maiden name. Wiley was the executor of his father's will as is proven in the numerous newspaper notices about the estate. Allen died in 1841. He is listed on the 1837 Kemper County MS State Census. There is also a Page, Willis which I wonder if it was Pope, Willie but misspelled and written in a manner that the e could be interpreted as a s. There is a Burwell Pope who is another of the sons of Allen. My Jabez moved to Hinds County, MS with his wife's Presnall family. Wiley, Jabez and Burwell were all born in GA. They moved to Clarke County, Alabama, where Jabez and Clarissa Presnall met and married. They all soon moved on to MS. Allen Pope was born in Edgecombe County, NC but his father, Jesse Pope, moved the family to GA when Allen was young. Jesse died in GA, but Allen, Burwell, and Willie were among the first families in Kemper County MS and Jabez was the same in Hinds County, MS. Allen died in Kemper county in 1841 and Jabez moved on to Texas where he died in 1942.
I hope this clears up the misunderstanding about Wiley Pope. I have the Pope family traced back to William Pope who was born in Bristol, England in 1634 and died in Isle of Wight County, VA in 1706/7. It is believed that Nathaniel Pope, whose daughter Ann married John Washington and they were the great grandparents of George Washington.
