This present building dates from about 1850 and is the last of five structures to house the church body, according to Mrs. I. Z. McKay, longtime member. It was originally built for the Pisgah congregation, located near Hermanville, but was moved to the Sarepta site sometimes after WWI when Pisgah ceased to exist. In the 1800's the structure also served as a community school. (Photo courtesy of Clay Daniels).
From letter on file in Millsaps College archives ((File courtesy of Debra McIntosh, College Archivist at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi). Mrs. I Z McKay of Bogalusa, La., who is now 93 years of age, informs me that the first Sarepta Church was built this side of Barland Post Office and next was built between the present Church and the Cemetery. The first Church was built before she was born and she said it seemed that her father, M J Marble and step - grandfather, Armsted P Poole and two sons built this Church. When I first knew this Church, it was about 1887. I went to school in this Church. It was a rough old country Church and it seems to me it had wooden shutters. In less than a year, it was torn down and they built a new Church.
The first preacher I remember was Reverend W P Jones. He married a cousin of Mrs. Tom Trim. We were always on the Hermanville Charge and had the same pastors. I will always remember Reverend A D Miller, a fine, beloved old man. He performed the ceremony when Mr. Nesmith and I were Married on January 26th, 1899. This Church was torn down and sold during or right after World War I. Old Pisgah had closed her doors, so we bought Pisgah Church and moved it here. Mr. Adams Winters, who at that time owned the Fritz Martin place, deeded the land for the Church. Mrs. McKay thinks it was fifteen acres. About forty years ago, ( 1910?) there was a live Sunday School with regular attendance of over one hundred members and Mr. I Z McKay was the superintendent of the Sunday School for forty - five years of more. It seems that it was sixty years of more for he was the only superintendent I ever knew at Sarepta Church, except one year when Mrs. Will Nobles served.
Mr. I Z McKay was a grand old man - always faithful to old Sarepta Church until his health failed and he had to give up and lived with his devoted daughter, Mrs. Ray Starnes. The Church has been going down ever since. Mrs. I Z McKay is the oldest living member, a grand old lady, who has always given of her means to the Church and loved the old Church. Mrs. Ellen Boren of Burnell, Mississippi, and Mrs. J A Higgins of Vicksburg, are the next oldest members of Sarepta Church. It seemed for a time that old Pisgah (Note: The Pisgah Church building was now relocated at Sarepta) would have to close her doors again, but thanks to Brother and Mrs. Carl Jackson, and mother, for the money and work they have put out to keep the doors open and hold services twice a month. Thanks to Brother Prewitt for what he has done for the Church. (Note: Rev. Tom Prewitt was the District Superintendent, Vicksburg District in 1950.) It seems as if this is five Churches that have been built in this community. We have just given the Church a new coat of paint inside and out, and floor also, and varnished up everything inside, but the people won’t come to Church like they did in the old days when it seemed that people came from everywhere.
I feel like if the old Church could sing, it would sing that beautiful song Come to the Church in the Wildwood, Come to the Church in the Vale. I am sorry I do not know any dates of when these Churches were built. (Signed) Mrs. Edd Nesmith, Burnell, Mississippi, February, 1950.

A note - The State of Mississippi
and thus Claiborne County was, and is, a ‘public land’ state, and
was thus surveyed in the Section, Township and Range, methods based
on the 36 - square - mile Township, that was initiated by the Land
Ordinance of 1785. The original unit of measure the "Gunter’s
Chain." The Gunter’s Chain is Sixty - Six feet long and divided into
One Hundred lengths (links). Thus - the measurements "80 chains to
the mile," "40 chains to the Half - Mile," and "20 chains to the
Quarter - Mile." Thus - When the land was divided into Sections One
mile square, and Quarters thereof, it all fit. Also - A link in a
Gunter’s Chain is between Eight and Nine inches in length. Today
with the advent of hand held calculators and the computers,
surveyors use a One Hundred foot steel tape with the inches in
Tenths.
To complicate matters, the Western and Northern areas of
Claiborne County had been; # 1. Partially surveyed by the Spanish,
the British and, perhaps, the French. # 2. In addition, early
settlers from the Eastern colonies brought the ‘metes & bounds’
system which utilized streams, roads, trees, rocks, etc. Thus - The
ownership of land in the Western and Northern areas of Claiborne
County soon became very complicated.

From letter on file in Millsaps College archives ((File courtesy
of Debra McIntosh, College Archivist at Millsaps College in Jackson,
Mississippi). Mrs. I Z McKay of Bogalusa, La., who is now 93 years
of age, informs me that the first Sarepta Church was built this side
of Barland Post Office and next was built between the present Church
and the Cemetery. The first Church was built before she was born and
she said it seemed that her father, M J Marble and step -
grandfather, Armsted P Poole and two sons built this Church. When I
first knew this Church, it was about 1887. I went to school in this
Church. It was a rough old country Church and it seems to me it had
wooden shutters. In less than a year, it was torn down and they
built a new Church. The first preacher I remember was Reverend W P
Jones. He married a cousin of Mrs. Tom Trim. We were always on the
Hermanville Charge and had the same pastors. I will always remember
Reverend A D Miller, a fine, beloved old man. He performed the
ceremony when Mr. Nesmith and I were Married on January 26th, 1899.
This Church was torn down and sold during or right after World War
I. Old Pisgah had closed her doors, so we bought Pisgah Church and
moved it here. Mr. Adams Winters, who at that time owned the Fritz
Martin place, deeded the land for the Church. Mrs. McKay thinks it
was fifteen acres. About forty years ago, ( 1910?) there was a live
Sunday School with regular attendance of over one hundred members
and Mr. I Z McKay was the superintendent of the Sunday School for
forty - five years of more. It seems that it was sixty years of more
for he was the only superintendent I ever knew at Sarepta Church,
except one year when Mrs. Will Nobles served. Mr. I Z McKay was a
grand old man - always faithful to old Sarepta Church until his
health failed and he had to give up and lived with his devoted
daughter, Mrs. Ray Starnes. The Church has been going down ever
since. Mrs. I Z McKay is the oldest living member, a grand old lady,
who has always given of her means to the Church and loved the old
Church. Mrs. Ellen Boren of Burnell, Mississippi, and Mrs. J A
Higgins of Vicksburg, are the next oldest members of Sarepta Church.
It seemed for a time that old Pisgah (Note: The Pisgah Church
building was now relocated at Sarepta) would have to close her doors
again, but thanks to Brother and Mrs. Carl Jackson, and mother, for
the money and work they have put out to keep the doors open and hold
services twice a month. Thanks to Brother Prewitt for what he has
done for the Church. (Note: Rev. Tom Prewitt was the District
Superintendent, Vicksburg District in 1950.) It seems as if this is
five Churches that have been built in this community. We have just
given the Church a new coat of paint inside and out, and floor also,
and varnished up everything inside, but the people won’t come to
Church like they did in the old days when it seemed that people came
from everywhere.
I feel like if the old Church could sing, it
would sing that beautiful song Come to the Church in the Wildwood,
Come to the Church in the Vale. I am sorry I do not know any dates
of when these Churches were built. (Signed) Mrs. Edd Nesmith,
Burnell, Mississippi, February, 1950.
Mr. Grayson is host of "Mississippi Roads on Mississippi E T V
and a weatherman at W L B T Television in Jackson, Mississippi
I
was at the annual home coming of Sarepta United Methodist Church out
in rural Claiborne County a few Sundays ago doing a little video
taping for feature stories. Sarepta is no longer an active Church.
They meet just once a year, the last Sunday in April. Usually the
last pastor of the Church (Note - The last assigned pastor was given
a blanket invitation to return each year.) comes back every year and
preaches that day. But he was tied up this year at his own Church.
So he asked me, since I was going to be there anyway, if I would
mind delivering the sermon that morning. The request isn’t all that
strange. back in my college days I actually pastored at a little
country Church for a few years. But I haven’t really preached in a
while. As a matter of fact the last time I supplied the pulpit was
several years ago so a friend of mine could take a Sunday night off
from his Church in Pearl. The chairman of Deacons was obviously a
little bewildered as he introduced me, He didn’t know why the
weatherman was delivering the message that evening. And he wasn’t
sure what I might use for a text - perhaps the maps in the Bible.
But it’s been a long time since college. The list of sermon topics I
feel comfortable with has narrowed considerably. For instance, me
being a T V weatherman, you’ll never hear me preach much about not
bearing false witness. My Daughter asked what I was going to speak
about. I told her about fifteen minutes. After all, people would be
there to eat, not hear me talk all morning. I explained I might
touch on the four or so remaining Commandments I still felt at home
with. After all, I haven’t murdered anyone. She reminded me that if
I had so much as been angry with anyone it’s the same as murder. I
had just driven down Lakeland Drive in Flowood, so there went that
idea. By Sunday, I had settled on Forgiveness as my subject matter.
Then we ate. An old friend was there that day, Gordon Cotton,
curator of the Old Courthouse Museum in Vicksburg. He told me after
Church that sometimes he is called upon to fill the pulpit at his
home Church. (Note - Mr. Cotton attends the Primitive Baptist Church
in Vicksburg, Ms.) Once when he was to do so, he had a house guest
from Iowa. (Gordon called him a "damn Yankee" but since we are
talking about Church I suppose I better not say that.) The Iowan
asked him what he was going to preach about. Forgiveness, Gordon
told him. The fellow laughed and sneered at the same time and said,
"You Southerners don’t know anything about forgiveness. Until y’all
can forgive Sherman for all he did to you in the Civil War, you have
no moral right to speak on the subject." Gordon immediately changed
his topic. Well, God bless all the Sarepta’s and Spring Groves and
Good Hopes and New Hopes and all the rest as you have dinner on the
grounds and revivals this summer. If you happen to be preaching at
any of these occasions, remember, the people came there to eat!!

shows the road, the Church, the Spring and Township - section line.
Although the Survey states in the Nw or the N2, actually much of the
