In the earliest days of the Mississippi Territory, the territorial governor Winthrop Sargent proclaimed “…all and singular the lands lying and being within the boundaries of the Mississippi Territory…should constitute two counties…the northern or upper division [to be called] the County of Pickering…. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the public seal to be affixed, this second day of April, Anno Domini 1799....”

Less than three years later, on January 11, 1802, the Legislative Council and House of Representatives of the Mississippi Territory passed “An Act to alter the name of Pickering County” to Jefferson County. Among the surviving records of the short-lived Pickering County are 43 marriage returns dated 1800-1801, recorded intermittently throughout the first 150 pages of a volume now known as the Jefferson County “Deed Record,” volume A-1 (1798-1818).
