Nan Harvey, Jackson, MS
Samuel Coke Kelly, buried in the Indianola City Cemetery served as a private in Co. E, 1st Mississippi Cavalry Reserves.
Samuel Coke Kelly, son of Sims Kelly and Eliza Patton was born 1846 in Talladega Co., AL and moved with his family to the Winston County, MS area before 1860. He had many other Kelly kin there. After the war, several members of the Kelly family moved to Yazoo County, MS. There Coke (he was known by his middle name) married Virginia Lacy and owned a farm near Anding. He lived in Yazoo County until he got old and he and Virginia had to move in with their daughter in Boyle, Bolivar County, MS. The compiled service record for the S. Kelly in Co. H, 1st Mississippi Cavalry, shows that he enlisted in Bolivar County under Capt. Herren and was paid by Capt. McClure. Samuel Coke Kelly had no reason to be in Bolivar County in 1862. Samuel Coke Kelly filed twice (1914 & 1916) for a pension in Yazoo County and again in Bolivar County in 1924 on his service in the "1st MS Regt, " serving under Capt. Alix Hall and Col. Dennis or Denny. After finding Col. Jules C. Denis in the 1st MS Cavalry Reserves and Capt. A. A. Hall's service records in Co. E 1st Mississippi Cavalry Reserves, S. C. Kelly was found among the soldiers in Company E. His residence was shown as Leake County, MS. Coke had several relatives living in the Winston, Attala, Neshoba & Leake county area during that time. Therefore, I believe that the S. C. Kelly buried in the Indianola City Cemetery with wife Virginia Lacy Kelly served in Co. E, 1st Mississippi Cavalry Reserves.
