Duke
Query posted September 1, 2003
Looking for information about HENRY M. DUKE and his wife SUSAN. Census information, 1860, Carroll Co. (Carrollton) shows Henry M. Duke, 45, born Ga (?);wife (I assume) Susan, age 30, born S. C.?; J. T, male, 17; R.W., male, 15; F. S.?, female, 7; Wm. H, male, 5; J. W., 3; S. L. M ?, female, 2. I can't seem to find any cemetery information on Henry or Susan.
A great-aunt of mine, Beulah Woodell, married brothers, Irvin and Ernest Duke (first Irvin, then Ernest, I believe, after the former died). They sem to have been the sons of a William E. Duke who was born in TN. I'm wondering if this William was also a son of Henry M. Duke, or at least related.
My great-grandfather William James Woodell (father of Beulah Woodell Duke) had a sister who lived in Carroll Co. during the Civil War, apparently. And he did have a sister named Susan, though I cannot find her married name or even if she ever married. The only information I have about her is the 1850 census for Madison Co. TN and a letter my ggrandfather wrote to her while he was stationed at Vicksburg, 1863. In this letter her name is not mentioned. She is simply addressed as "Sister." So I am wondering if this Susan Duke could have been this sister. However, Susan WOODELL was not born in S. C. but TN (or NC). Her age would have been about 26 in 1860, not 30 However, census information can often be misleading.
Any Help Appreciated.
