Submitted by Anne Ann Geoghegan

Transcribed from the 1820 Jefferson County Census

Free Persons of Color

Transcriber's note: Susan Butcher Beaube (Bobee & other assorted spellings!), consort of Lewis Beaube, along with two others, believed to be her children, were also listed on the census in the home of Lewis Beaube, however they were listed as slaves. They are listed on the 1810 Census as Free Colored. Susan's descendants believe she was always free and that she may have been Indian or Indian/Black mixed. She was born in Maryland and came to the Mississippi Territory with Lewis in the latter part of the 1790's. Many of her descendants still live in Jefferson County today. For more information on Susan and her descendants, please contact: Dot Brown at angels1203@aol.com
