Mr. J. W. Broughton, Commander of J. S. Whitney Camp, U.C.V., was born in Rodney, Miss., June 13, 1847, and save for about twelve years spent in New Orleans, has been living in his native State all of his life.
At the age of fifteen he entered the Confederate army and served for eighteen months, receiving an honorable parole at the close of the war.
Mr. Broughton’s life has been given about equally to the farming and mercantile pursuits. He left Oakland College School to enter the army.
To Mr. Broughton more than to any other one man is due the credit of having persevered in raising funds for the erection of a Confederate Monument on the public square in Fayette, for which the contract has been let.
The local chapter of Sons of Confederate Veterans is named in his honor.
