Anderson, Brig Genl Richard Heron - born Statesburg, Sumter Co, SC; Oct
7, 1821. USMA Class of 1842. Served in the Mexican War. Following the
war, failed as a planter, worked as a day laborer in the yards of the
SC Railroad. Appointed State Inspector of Phosphates. Died Beaufort SC,
June 26, 1879.

Ashly, Genl Turner - born Oct 23, 1828 at  Rose Bank, Fraquier Co,
Va - commanded the 7th Va Cavalry - died June 8, 1862 at Cross Keys
protecting Jackson’s retreat from the Valley. Buried in Stonewall
Cemetery; Winchester Va.

Lieutenant-Colonel  3rd Regt - Cavalry, Co G. Killed at Okolona.

Beauregard, Genl Pierre Gustave Toutant -  born near New Orleans,
La. in 1818; USMA 1838, Served in the Mexican War. Superintendent of US
Military Academy. Directed the bombardment of Ft Sumter in 1861;
surrendered with Johnston to Sherman (1865).  Was president
of  New Orleans, Jackson  & Mississippi  Railroad
from 1865 - 1870. Adjutant General of Louisiana 1878.  Died 1893
in New Orleans.

Pickens Co, AL ;July  21, 1832. Joined 5th Ala in Pickensville as

furloughed home. Captured May 3, 1863 at Chancellorsville. Forwarded to
Old Capital Prison May 8, 1863. Died Oct 4, 1901.  Buried
Friendship Cemetery; Columbus, Lowndes Co, MS.

Butler, Genl Benjamin F. -  born 1818 in Deerfield, NH; educated

legislator; military governor of Louisiana, member of House of
Representatives 1867-75, 1877-79; managed impeachment trial of
President Andrew Johnson; governor of Massachusetts 1882. Died 1893.

Scouts and Ferguson’s brigade. Killed Apr 15, 1865 near Stateville NC.

Tenn. Moved to Miss in 1839; served in the Mexican War.; wounded at
Williamsburg, resigned; died in Feb of 1869 in Jefferson Co, MS.

Crockett, Lt David M. - Co K 19th Miss. - attained the rank of Capt in
the 19th Miss.

Colston, Genl  Raleigh Edward- born Oct 31, 1825 in Paris; VMI
1846; taught at VMI with Thomas Jackson and Richard Rodes. Col 16th
Va;  promoted to Brig Genl in Dec of 1861. Established military
school in NC following the war.  Left to accept colonelcy in
Egyptian army. Returned to US in 1879 and spent last two years of his
life in Confederate soldiers home in Richmond. Died Jul 19, 1896 and is
buried in  Hollywood Cemetery; Richmond.

Daniels, Col Junius - 14th NC - born Jun 27, 1828 in Halifax Co NC.
USMA 1851. Resigned from army in 1858. Col in the 14th and 45th NC.
Promoted Brigadier General Sept 1862. Wounded May 12, 1864 at
Spotsylvania and died the following day. Buried Halifax Co NC.

Davis, President Jefferson - born Christian Co, Ky; educated at
Transylvania University. USMA Class of 1828. Resigned from the Army in
1835. Elected to Congress; served in the Mexican War. US Senate 1847
-1851. Secretary of War 1853 -1857. US Senate 1857 - 1861.  Lived
in Canada and England after the war. President of insurance company in
Memphis. Died Dec 5, 1889 in New Orleans. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery,
Richmond, Va. US Citizenship restored in 1978.

at the age of 42 near Old Pilgrims Church, Pickensville, AL on Nov 26,
1880.

wounds of accidental gun shot. 

Duncan, Lt James H.  -  Co E 19th Miss. - appointed Adjutant.
Became Lt Col in the 19th, suffered severe head wound and was left
unconscious by his troops  at Ft Gregg Va in Apr of 1865. 

Early, Genl Jubal Anderson -  born in Franklin County, Va.; USMA ;
served in the Mexican War. Opposed secession of Virginia
but     accepted Confederate States 
commission; won fame at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville;
commanded division at Gettysburg. Fled the US after the war living in
Mexico and Canada. Returned to practice law in Lynchburg, Va in
1869.  Died 1894.

Ervin, Capt Artemas J. "Art" - Co E 11th Miss. Regt - Prairie Guards -
born Jul 21, 1842  in MS; wounded Aug 30 1862 at Second Manassas,
July 3 1863 at Gettysburg  and Aug 18 1864 at Petersburg. Died
Sept 20, 1928 in Crawfordville, Lowndes Co, MS.

joined the 11th in Apr 1861 at Crawfordville, Lowndes Co MS; wounded at
Gaines Mill; detailed in Medical Dept and Acting Assistant Surgeon.

Ewell, Genl Richard Stoddert -  born in Georgetown, District of
Columbia, in 1817; USMA;  second in command to Jackson in the
Shenandoah Valley campaign, and after Jackson's death promoted to
lieutenant general and to command 2nd Corps; lost leg at 2nd battle of
Bull Run; led advance of Lee's army into Pennsylvania; fought
desperately at Gettysburg. Died 1872.

Farley, Capt W.D. - volunteer aid to Genl  JEB Stuart May - July,
1862. Killed at battle of Stevensburg VA June 9, 1863.

Faulkner, Col William C. - served as Lt in 2nd  Regiment Miss
Infantry during the Mexican War. Was in command of the 2nd Miss. 
when it arrived in Va in 1861. Was defeated in election for command in
April of 1862.

Featherston, Genl  Winfield S. - born Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co,
TN. Served in the Creek War. A lawyer by profession, served two terms
in the US House 1847-1851. Colonel, 17th Miss. Infantry Regt. Brigadier
General, P.A.C.S. to rank from March 4,1862.  Elected to Miss
House after the war.  Appointed judge in 1887.  Died May 28,
1891 in Holly Springs MS; buried Hill Creek Cemetery.

Fremont, John C. - born 1813 in Savannah, Ga. Educated at the College
of Charleston. Engineer and professor of mathematics. Commissioned in
army in 1838. Served in the Mexican War. Civil governor of California.
Acquired extreme wealth when gold was discovered on his estate in 1849.
US Senator 1850, Republican candidate for President in 1856. Appointed
Major General, US Army, in 1861; resigned 1862. Governor, Territory of
Arizona, 1878 - 1883. Died 1890.

French, Genl Samuel G. - born Gloucester Co, NJ in 1818. USMA Class of
1843. Served in the Mexican War of 1848.  Resigned Army commission
in 1856.  Appointed Brig Gen in 1861. Served in Va until 1863.
Served under J.E. Johnston until  disabled at Nashville. Paroled
at Columbus, Ga. 1865.  Following the war, lived near Greenville,
MS and later moved to Florida. Died April 29, 1910 and is buried in St.
John’s Cemetery in Pensacola.

on Jan 31, 1816. Graduated Cumberland University. Came to Eutaw AL in
1837. Taught school and read law.  Graduated law school at
Transylvania University.  Elected Ala legislature. Served in
the  Mexican War. President of the Great Southern Railroad. 
Wounded at Gaines Mill June 27, 1862 and died three weeks later in
Richmond.

Halleck, Genl Henry Wager -  born 1814 in Westernville, NY; USMA
1839, succeeded McClellan in July 1862 as commander of all Union
armies; superseded March 1864 by Grant. Died 1872.

Hamilton, Maj Daniel H. - 13th NC - born in Charleston, SC. Educated at
the South Carolina military academy (later The Citadel). An instructor
at the military institute at Hillsboro at the beginning of the war.
Served on the staff of Gen Ripley, resigned and joined 1st SC under the
command of his father, Col D H Hamilton. Wounded at Shepardstown and
disqualified from active duty. Captured and paroled by Sherman in 1865.

Hardin, Capt Thomas J.  Co I 19th Miss. - killed at Spottsylvania
May 12, 1864.

Harris, Capt Nathaniel Harrison - born Aug 22, 1834 in Natchez.
University of Louisiana law graduate; established in Vicksburg. Became
a general during the war and was in command of the 19th Miss when Lee
surrendered. Return to Vicksburg after the war to practice law and run
the Mississippi Valley and Ship Island Railroad. Left Miss and made his
home in San Francisco. Died Aug 23, 1900 in England.

service. Died Mar 3, 1908 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in
Talladega, AL.

Henley, Louis Darby - Pickensville Blues - Co H 5th Ala - enlisted at
Pickensville AL in May of 1861; at Chimborazo Hospital #4 Dec. 8 1861 -
Jan 1 1862; furloughed home Oct 8 1862 until Mar 31 1863. Captured at
Petersburg ;  sent to POW camp in Elmira N.Y. Released July 7
1865. 

Hill, Genl Ambrose Powell  -  born Nov 9, 1825 in Culpepper
County, Va.; USMA 1847;  served in Mexican and Seminole Wars;
lieutenant general in Confederate army; led division during Seven
Days', 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg battles; wounded at
Chancellorsville; made commander of corps of Lee's army, which he led
at Gettysburg and in Wilderness Campaign; killed at Petersburg Apr 4,
1865. Buried in Richmond.

Hood, Genl John Bell  -  born 1831 in Owingsville, Ky.; West
Point Class of 1853; commanded divisions at Gettysburg and Chickamauga;
commander of Army of Tennessee, succeeding Joseph E. Johnston.
Commanded Confederate army in defense of Atlanta. A commission merchant
in New Orleans following the war. Died of yellow fever Aug 30, 1879.
Buried in Metairie Cemetery - New Orleans.

Jackson, Genl Thomas Jonathan - born Jan. 21, 1824 in Clarksburg, Va.
(now West Virginia). United States Military Academy 1846.  Served
in the Mexican War. In seven months he rose from second lieutenant to
major. In 1851 he resigned from the army to teach at Virginia Military
Institute.  Wounded May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville, Va. and died
eight days later. Buried at VMI.

Johnson, Pvt Thomas B. - Co B 19th Miss. - died Hattiesburg MS in 1908.

Johnson, Andrew - born on Dec 29, 1808 in Raleigh, NC. Became
successful tailor in  Greeneville, TN.  US House 1843-1853.
Governor of Tenn 1853-1857. US Senate 1857-1861. Military Governor of
Tenn 1862-1864. Vice President in Lincoln’s second term. Became
17th  President upon Lincoln’s death. Retired 1869. Elected US
Senate in 1875 becoming the only ex-President elected to that body.

Johnston, Genl Albert S. - born Washington, Ky in 1803. Educated at
Transylvania University and USMA ( 1826). Resigned from the Army in
1834. Enlisted as a private in 1836 in the army of the Republic of
Texas; became General in command within 2 years.  Secretary of War
for the Republic.  Commanded a regiment of Texas volunteers in the
Mexican War. General in the Confederate Army. Killed at the Battle of
Shiloh in April of 1862.

Johnston, Genl Joe E. - born Prince Edward Co, Va. Grandnephew of
Patrick Henry. USMA. Served in Seminole War. Career Army. Resigned to
accept General’s commission in Confederate army. Surrendered to Sherman
Apr 26, 1865. US House 1879 -1881. US Railroad commissioner 1887 -1891.

Washington College at Lexington, Va. Died on Oct. 12, 1870. Citizenship
restored in 1975 by President Gerald Ford.

Liddell, Col Phillip Frank  - 11th Miss. - Served as Captain in
the Second Regiment Mississippi Infantry during the Mexican War.
Mustered into State service Feb 26, 1861 at Carrollton MS as Capt of Co
K  11th Miss. Regt. Promoted to Lt Col at Regiment and
elected  Regimental commander at reorganization. Wounded at
Sharpsburg  September 14, 1862 and died September 16.

Wilcox.  Married  Frances Johnson, October 12,1865  in

Longstreet, Genl James  - Born in Edgefield District, SC Jan 8,
1821; raised by his uncle Augustus B. Longstreet in Gainesville Ga.
A.B. Longstreet was L.Q.C. Lamar’s  father-in-law. Appointed to
USMA  from Ala. Class of  1842; distinguished himself at Bull
Run, Fredericksburg, Chickamauga, and in battle of the Wilderness;
Pardoned in Jun of 1867; Surveyor for the Port of New Orleans 1869;
Postmaster of Gainesville Ga 1879; U.S. Minister to Turkey 1880-81;
Federal Marshall for the northern district of Ga 1881; U.S. Railway
Commissioner 1898-1904. Owned a hotel in Gainesville GA where Woodrow
Wilson boarded. Died Jan 2, 1904 in Gainesville Ga.

Loudermilk, Cpl William - Co B 19th Miss.

Lovell, Genl Mansfield - Born Oct 20, 1822 in Washington, DC; USMA
Class of 1842. Served in the Mexican War. Resigned and was Deputy
Street Commissioner of NYC when war begin. Returned to New York
following the war. Died June 1, 1884 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery
in New York City.

Lowry,  William B. “Bill” - Co A 11th Miss - University Greys -
University of Mississippi . Was Captain of the Greys at age

1862.  Commanded the 11th Miss. Resigned Dec 1,1864.  Lived
in Noxubee Co MS after the war.

48th Miss. Son of a Presbyterian minster who moved to Columbus, Lowndes
Co, MS  in 1841. Appointed Assistant Surgeon Mar 3, 1862. Was with
the 48th Feb 28, 1865. Married Susan Winter in Dec of 1874.

Macon, Capt  Jacob M.  - Co A 19th Miss. - mortally wounded
May 5, 1862, Williamsburg, Va.

Magruder, Genl John B.  - born 1807 in Port Royal,  Va. USMA
Class of 1830. Served in the Mexican War. Fled to Mexico after the
Civil War. Served in the army of Maximilian. Returned to United States
with the fall of Maximilian. Died Feb 18, 1871 in Houston, Tex.

Manlove, Capt Thomas B. - Manlove’s Co B 21st Miss. Regt - Warren Co -
Vicksburg was transferred to 2nd Miss. / 48th Miss. Regt  at
Yorktown in 1862. Manlove became Lt Col of the 2nd Miss. Wounded at the
Wilderness in May of 1864 and at Burgess’ Mill in February 1865. Lost
his wife Flora Belle in Marlin, TX on Jun 27, 1868 while she was
visiting her sister.

engineer;  Governor of New Jersey 1878 - 1881. He died in Orange,

Milroy, Genl Robert H. - US Major General who opposed Jackson in the
Shenandoah Valley.

Mitchell, Genl Ormsby M. - US general serving in Tenn. Was a classmate
of RE Lee at West Point.

Mooney  (Samuel) - Co B 19th Miss. - born 1840 in NC. Enlisted May
16, 1861 at Abbeville, MS. Died Sept 23, 1864 in Richmond of 
disease.     

Mooney, Sgt William Eli - Co B 19th Miss. - paroled from the 19th
Miss  following Lee’s surrender in April 1865.

Morehead, Lt James H. - Pickensville Blues - Co H  11th Ala Regt -
enlisted June 11, 1861 in Pickens Co, AL.  Died  July 6, 1865
from wounds received at Gettysburg.

Morgan, Col James B. - 29th Miss. - born Mar 14, 1835 in Lincoln Co
Tenn. Moved to DeSota Co Miss in 1845. Admitted to the bar in 1857.
Entered the 29th as a private. Miss Senate 1876-1878. US House
1884-1891. Murdered by  fellow lawyer June 18, 1892.

Morgan, Genl John Hunt -  born  July 1, 1825 in Huntsville,
AL. Attended Transylvania University. Served in the Mexican War. 
Confederate cavalry general and  raider;  Killed Sept 4, 1864
in Greeneville Tenn. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery ,  Richmond and
later reinterred in Lexington, Ky.

Morrison, Parson Hugh M. - Chaplain Co G 19th Miss. - Brandon, Rankin
Co, MS.

Mott, Col  Christopher Haynes  - born Livingston Co Ky in
1826. Studied law at Transylvania University. Served as 1st
Lieutenant  of Miss Volunteers in Mexican War of 1848.  Law
partner of L Q C Lamar. Organized  19th Miss. in 1861 - killed at
Williamsburg, Va., May 5, 1862. Re-interred in Feb of 1867 in Holly
Springs, Marshall Co, MS.

Mullins, Capt Lemuel  R. - Co E 19th Miss. - died November 10,
1863.

Mullins, Maj John - 19th Miss. - transferred to cavalry.

Munford, William - hanged by Benjamin Butler in New Orleans for tearing
down and mangling a US flag. Done before Federals formally took
procession of city; therefore no military or any other law broken.
Southerners considered Butler to have murdered Munford.

Norris, Lt George Davis  - Co B 19th Miss. - University of
Mississippi 1857;  died June 30, 1862 from wounds received at
Frazier’s Farm.  Buried in Brownlee Cemetery, Lowndes Co, MS.

Pate, Frank S. - Co E 11th Miss.

Patterson, Sgt Nathan S. - Co B 19th Miss. 

Perry, Lt Ivory Q.  -  Co A 19th Miss. - wounded and retired.
Was in attendance  at reunion of Confederate veterans in
Carrollton AL in 1890.

Person, Genl - 

Pickett, Genl George Edward  - born  Richmond, Va  in
1825; graduated from West Point in 1846 (appointed by Lincoln). Fled to
Canada following the war. Returned to Virginia in 1866. Sold life
insurance in Norfolk until his death on Jul 30,  1875.

Potts, James  B. -  Corinth, Alcorn Co, MS.

Prigmore, Lt - 2nd Miss. Batl / 48th Miss. 

Pryor, Genl Roger A. - Hampden-Sydney College. U of Virginia law
school; Member of U.S. House before the war; served as Confederate
general. POW at Fort Lafayette. Friendship with Horace Greeley secured
Lincoln approved  release in Feb 1865. Moved to New York City in
1865 and became noted jurist. New York Supreme Court Justice. Buried in
Princeton, NJ.

Richards, Lt William C. “Bill” - Co D 10th Miss. Regt. - born in Shelby
Co AL in 1828; moved  to Columbus, Lowndes Co, MS in 1833. Became
Col in the 10th Miss.

Riley, Sgt Richard - Co B 19th Miss. - became Captain in the 19th.

Robinson, Capt Marcus L. - Co E 2nd Miss. Inf

Rodes, Genl Robert Emmett - 5th Ala - born March 29, 1829 in Lynchburg,
Bedford Co, Va.  VMI Class of 1848 - civil engineer. Taught at VMI
with Thomas Jackson and Raleigh Colston. Worked as railroad
construction engineer. Formed Co A of the 5th Ala at Tuscaloosa. 
Elected Colonel in 1861;  promoted to Maj Gen in May of 1863; died
during battle at Winchester Va.; Sept 19, 1864.

Scruggs, Capt Lewis S. - Co B 17th Miss. Regt - Mississippi Rangers -

July 14.1862; Major, 1864 to 1865.

Sharp, Col Jake  -  Blythe's Regt - Born 1833 in North
Carolina. Educated at the University of Georgia.  Entered Blythe’s
Regt as a private in 1861. Become general serving in S.D. Lee’s
Corps.  Paroled 1865 and returned to Lowndes Co, MS. Died Sept.
16, 1907. Buried in Friendship Cemetery - Columbus MS.

Sharp, Capt Thomas I. - Co E 10th Miss. Regt. Killed at the Battle of
Atlanta  July 28,1864. Brother of Col Jake Sharp. Buried in
Friendship Cemetery - Columbus MS.

Sherman, Genl William T. - born Lancaster, Ohio Feb 8, 1820. USMA Class
of 1840. Fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars. Resigned in 1853 to
join bank partnership in San Francisco. President of Louisiana Military
College (LSU) 1859 - 1861. Given command of the US Army in 1869 when
Grant became President. Retired in 1883. Died 1891. 

Shields, Genl James  -  born in County Tyrone, Ireland in
1806; officer in Mexican War; governor of Oregon territory 1848-49;
represented 3 states in United States Senate Illinois 1849 - 1855,
Minnesota 1858 - 1859, and Missouri. Resigned  US Army 1863. Died
1879.

the Miss Senate in 1875. Lt Gov of Miss.

Mill June 27,1862.

Sisson, William A. - Co B 19th Miss. 

Smith, Pvt Richard M. - Co B 19th Miss- killed in action.

Smith, Genl E. Kirby -  born May 16, 1824 in St. Augustine, Fla.
USMA Class of 1845. Served in the Mexican War of 1848. Fled to Mexico
following the Civil War. Returned to the US. President of the
University of Nashville 1870-1879.  Mathematics  professor at
the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. Died Mar 28, 1893 and is
buried in Sewanee Cemetery.

Smith, Genl Gustavus W - born 1821 in Kentucky. USMA 1842. Mexican War.
Resigned from the army before the war. Was a civil engineer and
commissioner of streets in New York City. Confederate general;
Surrendered to Sherman in Macon, Ga on April 20, 1865. Returned to New
York after the war.

Battle of Second Manassas and retired from 19th Miss. Raised a Cavalry
company  and served under General Wheeler until the end of the
war. Elected sheriff of Noxubee County 1865;1867 and to the Mississippi
legislature. Died in Noxubee Co November 7, 1905.

Tison, Capt William H.H.  - Co K 19th Miss. - born Nov 6, 1822 in
Jackson Co AL. Elected to the Miss legislature from Tishomingo Co in
1855; US Marshall; joined the 19th in 1861;  promoted Colonel
Thirty-Second Mississippi Regiment. Wounded at Atlanta. Died in
Baldwyn, Tishomingo Co, MS Dec 4, 1882.

Toombs, Genl Robert  -  born in Washington, Wilkes Co, Ga.
July 2, 1810; was expelled from Franklin College (U of Ga) on the eve
of graduation.  Law school at the University of Va. US House 1844
-51; US Senate 1852 - 61;  for short time Confederate secretary of
state; Fled to Paris after the war. Return to US in 1867 but refused to
take oath of allegiance and never had  full citizenship 
restored. Died Dec 15, 1885 in Wilkes Co, Ga.

Whitesides, Cpl James T. - Co B 19th Miss. - born 1840 in Ga; a
merchant. Died Aug 10, 1864 in Richmond, Va of wounds received in
battle.

Whitfield, George - AQM Old Co D 10th Miss. - Provost Marshall of
Columbus.

Whitfield, Lt John A. - Co D  2nd Miss. Batl / 48th Miss. 
Became Capt in the 48th Miss.

Whiting, Genl William Henry Chase  - born Biloxi, MS on March 22,
1824; USMA Class of 1845. Civil Engineer. Relieved of command following
Walthall Junction in May of 1864. Men who served under him alleged he
drank excessively.  Captured and died as a POW at Ft. Columbus,
Governor’s Island, NY. on March 10, 1865. Buried Oakdale Cemetery in
Wilmington.   

Wilburn, Dr. - both John C. & W.T. listed as surgeons.

Wilcox, Genl Cadmus Marcellus  - born May 29, 1824 in NC; USMA
Class of 1846. Served as groomsman at U S Grant’s wedding and was with
Lee at Appomattox. Lived in DC following the war and cared for his
brother’s widow. Accepted a Federal appointment from Grover Cleveland
1886- 1890.

Yancey, William L. - born 1814 at Ogeechee Shoals, Warren Co, Ga.
Educated at Williams College. Studied law; Came to Ala in 1839 as a
newspaper publisher.  US House 1844 -1846. During the war, was in
Paris and London trying to obtain diplomatic recognition for the
Confederacy. Died near Montgomery, Jul 27, 1863. Buried in Montgomery.
