Land Records

Winston County Land is identified by Section Number within Township and Range coordinates.  Normal sections contain 640 acres but there are some exceptions in Winston County due to Range 12E being more narrow than normal.  To learn more about land records, please consult Linda Haas Davenport's articles on Taking the Mystery Out of Land Records or Where to Obtain a Land Patent.  The Bureau of Land Management also has a nice on line tutorial.

Eileen Nail has provided a map that shows the range and township coordinates for Winston County. The map also shows the 5 Beats or Supervisor Districts. Starting with the 1880 census, households were recorded by Beat or Supervisor District.
