The
following information was submitted by Glenn Avary. Mr. Avary
copied the information at the State Archives, Jackson, MS. The original survey
was done by Dr. William D. McCain (Vol. 1) May 16, 1965-April 27,
1986.
The blacks have used the
eastern part of the Old Greensboro Cemetery for some years for their burials. It
is difficult to determine in some cases which ae the tombstones and markers for
blacks and for whites.
Therefore, all inscriptions on all markers and tombstones
was copied.
Mr. Avary suggests that if you
visit this cemetery, you go in the winter months when there is less growth as
the cemetery is overgrown and has been badly neglected.
Many stones have been
damaged and many just no longer exist, either covered by brush, earth, or
removed by vandals.
If there is anyone who can
organize a clean-up day and time and get volunteers to help restore this
cemetery (as much as possible);
it would be a most valuable project and would be
appreciated by generations yet to be born and begin genealogy
research.
