Richard Burress Log Book 1830's
|
Old Tishomingo County, Mississippi
Indexed by: Vicki
Burress Roach
(This was one of the most difficult documents I have ever
attempted to index. I am sure I have made many mistakes. Vicki )
Around July, 1830 Richard Burress
opened a shop in Old Tish. Co. He recorded all items purchased and
brought from Lagrange, Alabama to begin his shop. Later it appears
an inn was added. In August a man named Bob was hired as stocker for
a five month period at $5.00. This Burress line was
from Lawrence Co., AL.
This book was found intact in the Corinth courthouse
attic by the Alcorn Co. Genealogical Society during a cleaning
project. It is the oldest existing records for Old Tish. Co.
(The information in this shop ledger shows who had
accounts, what service was provided, amount and date charged, when
paid, etc. The back of the ledger book was used to note some
miscellaneous information.)
Surnames of all people mentioned: Page numbers:
Since this information is difficult to transcribe and some accounts
are quite lengthy, please do not request lookups. I will gladly send
you a photocopy of the page(s) for a fee upon request.
After I indexed this, I decided to use full names.
All names in the ledger did not have a first name. Many are Mr.
Jones or Mrs. Smith, etc. If you see several same surnames, only the
first entry has the page numbers. The following same names go with
the page numbers.

was a brother to Richard Burress. Richard A.
Burress was born ca 1786 in Maryland. His wife was
Sarah F. Unknown, born ca 1797 in Virginia. They were in Scott Co.,
Arkansas by 1860. A broken tombstone in Scott County cemetery
reads, "Sarah Burrus, wife of Richard, died Nov.
20, 1862, age about 60 years."
Richard and Sarah had a son, John C., born ca 1826
in Alabama. John married Catherine "Kate" Houston
who was born ca 1833 in Alabama. They married in Lawrence Co.,
Alabama on Aug. 19, 1852 and John was sheriff there for one term in
the early 1850's
In 1850 the Richard Burress family was listed in
Franklin Co., Alabama. He is believed to have died by 1870.
There is a marriage license in Lawrence Co., Alabama
for a Richard Burriss and Sarah Linthium
dated Jan., 1830.
The book "Early Settlers of Alabama" has this to say
on page 72, "Mr. John C. Burruss, son of Richard
Burruss, is said to have been one of the best
officers Lawrence County ever had. He was elected in 1851 and
served a full term very acceptably to the people, and honorably and
profitably to himself. He married Kate, a sister of Samuel D. and
John H. Houston. She was a most excellent lady,
highly endowed by nature and education, and a great favorite among
her acquaintances. When I come to speak of the Burruss
and Houston families I shall give an account of the
ancestry of Mr. Burruss and his wife."
