Panola County Mexican War (1846-1848) Unit

Men from Panola County served in the Second Regiment, Mississippi Infantry under Capt. A. A. Overton. The regiment was known as the Panola Boys and was raised in response to the governor's call for volunteers on November 26, 1846 and mustered at Vicksburg on January 1-5, 1847. A brief history of the unit and the battles in which it fought can be found in Military History of Mississippi 1803-1898 by Dunbar Rowland (Spartanburg, South Carolina, The Reprint Company, 1988.) on pages 29-30.

The National Archives and Records Administration has filmed an Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During The Mexican War (Microcopy M616, Rolls 1 through 41) and a Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the Mexican War in Organizations From the State of Mississippi (Microcopy M863, Rolls 1 through 9). These film series are widely available at state libraries and archives and larger genealogical libraries.

1. This company was mustered out at Cumberland Gap 27 March 1862 and reorganized at Senatobia as Co. B, 42nd Infantry Regiment.
