TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Graveside services for Dr. Jack D. Hollingsworth
were held Saturday, May 4, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Heritage Chapel
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Hollingsworth, 75, of Tuscaloosa, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, in
Tuscaloosa.
He was a 1945 graduate of Hickory High School and received his bachelor's
and master's degrees at the University of Alabama. He received his doctoral
degree from the University of Georgia and taught school in Georgia and
Alabama.
Dr. Hollingsworth was a strong supporter of Special Olympics and served
as state director of Special Olympics in Georgia in 1972. Moving back to
Alabama, he served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee
of Alabama Special Olympics.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa where he
served as a deacon and an elder. He was also a member of Gideon International.
Dr. Hollingsworth was a retired U.S. Army veteran of World War II and
the Korean War. He was also retired from the Partlow State School of Alabama.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy (Dot) Dutton Hollingsworth, to whom
he was married 42 years; a son, Jack Darel Hollingsworth Jr. and his wife
Barbara; two granddaughters, Keri Owen and Andrea Cartree and her husband
Michael; three great-grandchildren, all of Hiram, Georgia; a sister, Elsie
Brandon and her husband Vernon of Meridian; a sister-in-law, Dora Hollingsworth
of Leland; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Melissa Hollingsworth;
and two brothers, Everett Hollingsworth and Dwight Lancaster.

Mrs. Steele, 90, of Philadelphia, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Hospice
Ministries in Ridgeland.
Born in Meridian, Mrs. Steel spent her early life in Meridian surrounded
by a large family. She was named after a respected Meridian physician Sara
Castle who delivered her. Her father had been a Meridian businessman when
the Great Depression hit America hard in the 1920's. Sara and her siblings
left school to work and help support the family and erase the debt her
father owed. As with most families during this time, much was lost, but
a strong moral character and resilience was formed from these difficult
times.
She married John Samuel "Sam" Steel Jr. in 1936 and together they moved
to Philadelphia in 1944. For many years, they owned and operated Philadelphia
Equipment Company, specializing in the sales and service of farm equipment
and automobiles. Mrs. Steel worked in the office of the family business
during this time.
She is a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, she was a Sunday
School teacher of 12 year olds. She was involved in the Philadelphia Band
Boosters Parents Organization, the Adam Byrd Literary Society, the C.C.
Club, and a member of the Philadelphia Country Club. She was dedicated
to various activities of her children, and served in volunteer and chaperone
capacities. Her other interests included playing bridge, reading, and playing
the piano and organ.
After the death of her husband in 1963, she opened and operated an antique
and oriental import gift shop in Philadelphia, continuing her interest
in decorative arts. She had rental apartments in her home and made longstanding
friends with young people who shared her residence.
She was known to everyone as "Miss Sara." Her best friend, Jane Wilbur
Cole describes her as "always being cheerful and an inspiration to us all
and everyone in Philadelphia loved her."
Survivors include her son, John Samuel "Sonny" Steel III and his wife,
Sylvia, of Jackson; a daughter, Sabyna Jane Steel Sterrett and her husband,
Dr. Hatch Sterrett, of McLean, Va.; five granddaughters, Sandy Steel Temple
and her husband, Mac, Sara Jane Steel, Sharon Steel Davis and her husband,
Mike, Susan Steel Waters and her husband, Joel, all of Jackson; Stacy Steel
Swedenburg and her husband, Shaun, of Duluth, Ga.; ten great-grandchildren,
Kelly, Michelle and Caroline Temple, Heather and Eric Davis, Sam, Swayze
and Shelby Waters; Steel and Sydney Swedenburg; a loyal friend and caretaker
of 47 years, Mattie McAfee.

Jimmy, Latrice Chaney, Torie Chaney and Lorraine Gordon and her husband,
Fred, all of Meridian; and Tenia Hill and her husband, Demetrius of Pearl;
nine brothers, James Lewis and his wife, Debbie, John Lewis, Billy Lewis,
Casey Burge, and Barry Burge, all of Meridian; Demetri Chaney and his wife,
Eutiha, of Tupelo; Joe Parker and his wife, Pinky, Teddy Parker and Jerry
Parker all of Los Angeles; a loving step-mother, Vera Parker of Los Angeles;
five aunts, Betsy Blanks, Carrie Love and Janie Camper, all of Bailey;
Lilly D. Floyd and Janet Roberts, both of Racine, Wis.; three uncles, Charlie
Parker and Dan Parker Jr., both of Los Angeles; and Johnny Roberts of Racine;
two great-uncles, Rufus Wooten and his wife, Gladys, of Shucktown; and
Marshall Griffin of Meridian; one great-aunt, Gerdie Wooten of Chicago;
her best friend, Helena Clark and her husband, Joe, and several nieces,
nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father.

Services for Patricia G. Scott will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity
Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery with Barham
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Scott, 80, of Meridian, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Jeff Anderson
Regional Medical Center.
Visitation will be held Monday from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at the funeral home
and one hour prior to the service at the church.
