ALBERT BRYANT IVY

Services for Albert Bryant Ivy will be held Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at Barham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jon Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in Meridian Memorial Park Cemetery with Barham Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mr. Ivy, 95, of Meridian, died Sunday, April 21, 2002 in Meridian. He was a retired brakeman and conductor for G.M. & O Railroad. Mr. Ivy, was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He served as active member of the administrative council and board of trustees. He was usher for more than 30 years and lay delegate to the Mississippi Conference for 16 years. He was a member of Men's Bible Sunday School class, and served as secretary and treasurer for nearly 30 years. He was a member of the United Transportation Union for more than 50 years. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Kate Price Ivy of Meridian; five nieces, Louise Miller, Auzella Thompson, Carol Bryant, Naomi Freeman and Yvonne Taylor; two nephews, Ausie and Jerry Hinson; four granddaughters, Kathy Robinson, Nancy Dean, Rita Robertson and Marie Eckman; one great-granddaughter, Pam Robinson and one great-grandson, Addison Dean; a special niece, Helen Jackson and a special grandfather to the Russell children; Bobby, Charles and Carol and the Price children, Patti, Penni, Peggi, Ricky, Randy and Ronny, and other nieces and nephews. 
 

He was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers, his parents, George and Mollie Ivy and a daughter, Mary Price Robertson. 
 

Pallbearers will be Ricky Price, Randy Price, Ronny Price, Terry Belvin, Tim Johnson, J.W. Davenport, Steve Clark and Charles Russell. 
 

Visitation will be today 5 p.m.-8p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Merritt, 74, of Meridian, died Friday April 19, 2002, in Rochester, Minn. He was president of Merritt Tax Services. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Jean Rosenbaum Merritt of Meridian; children, Gregory A. Merritt and his wife, Dawn of Tampa, Fla.; Cheri Merritt Barry and her husband, Rick, of Meridian and Jeana Merritt Bennett and her husband, Bo, of Meridian; grandchildren, Jennifer Barry, Jay Barry, Merritt Barry, Brandon and Bonnie Bennett; and a sister, Marie Heiler of Batavia, N.Y. 
 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Florry Press and Isadore Benjamin. 
 

The family requests memorials be made to Church of the Mediator, The Key Chapter of the American Red Cross or the charity of choice.

Mrs. Rigdon, 84, of York, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at the Specialty Hospital in Meridian. 
 

Survivors include three sons, Algie Clowers Sr. of York, Thomas Rigdon, of Mobile and James Rigdon of Laurel, Miss.; one brother, Clinton Whitehead of Lauderdale, Miss.; one sister, Bertha Hutchinson of Suqualena, Miss.; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Easley, 72, of Grenada, Miss., died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Wayne General Hospital in Waynesboro, Miss.

Mr. Bonner, 87, of Meridian, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Bonner, 87, of Meridian, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. He was born May 19, 1914, in Toxey (Choctaw County), Ala., to Lula Odom Bonner and Bennie Bonner Sr. He was a self-made man and had a successful career as a truck driver for more than 50 years, working with Hardin's Bakery for more than 30 years. He made history at Hardin's as the first black truck driver hired by the company. After retiring at age 70, he continued to keep busy with his lawn and gardening service. 
 

He was a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church for more than 66 years and faithfully served as deacon and on the Trustee Boards. 
 

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #439 for more than 40 years and was a valued and respected member of the community. 
 

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Jannie "Honey" Bonner; four children, Daisy Purnell of Gary, Ind., and her husband, John, Christine Young of Meridian and her husband, Mozell, Jordan Bonner Jr. and his wife, Rose, of Gary, and Georgia "Baby" Sims and her husband, James, of Meridian; eight grandchildren, Jeanna Thornton of Ranch Cucamonga, Calif., and her husband, Raymond, James Holliday III of Chicago, Jennifer Bonner of Indianapolis, Ind., Marcia Longmire and her husband, Eric, of Southfield, Mich., LaChaundra "Tina" Clark and her husband, Demetrius, Elana "Frenchie" Thames, Eris Sims and Jamese "Banesee" Sims, all of Meridian, Bennie Bonner Jr. and Bill Bonner; 10 great-grandchildren and several other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Rhodes, 87, of Meridian, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Rush Foundation Hospital. She was a member of Duffee Baptist Church and taught children's school for 62 years. She was a church clerk for more than 30 years and served many years as director of W.M.U., discipleship director and vacation Bible school director. She began and directed the Duffee Senior Citizens Club and wrote the Duffee news for both the Newton Record and the Union Appeal. She was a 4-H leader for more than 25 years and president of the Suqualena School Reunion for more than 15 years. 
 

Survivors include her son, Ken Rhodes and his wife, Elaine, of Jackson; a daughter, Beverly A. Rhodes of Meridian; two grandchildren, Chris Rhodes of Petal and his wife, Laurie, Sheri Engle of Purvis and her husband, Stephen; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Rhodes, Adam Engle and Jacob Rhodes; two sisters, Julia Alice Smith and Nannie Mae Bowden, both of Meridian; and a brother, Robert Earl McCann of Horn Lake. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Purvis Rhodes.

Mrs. Nichols, 99, of Meridian, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Beverly HealthCare-Broadmoor. She was a member of Cokers Chapel United Methodist Church and was active in her later years in activities ranging from water aerobics to bingo. 
 

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Welker of Meridian and her husband, Clyde; daughter-in-law, Margaret Pickard; grandchildren, Sue Welker and Tom Welker; great-grandchildren, Thumper Welker, Olivia Welker, Tony Welker, Graig Welker, Heather Boldin and Hannah Pickard; a great-great-grandchild, Skylar Alexis; and several nieces, nephews and many friends. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband Alton Nichols, a son, Edgar Pickard, her parents, Morgan and Maggie Irby, a brother, Preston Irby, sisters, Mary Perry, Agnes Purvis and Myrtle Smith Pogue and grandchildren, Sharon Ann Walker, Paul Keith Pickard and Barry Pickard.

CLARKE THORNTON JR.

Services for Clarke "Doc" Thornton Jr. will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. Jerry Daniels officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Barham Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mr. Thornton, 79, of Meridian, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. 
 

"Doc" was born in Meridian on May 26, 1922. He was elected to the All Big 8 and All South football teams at Meridian High School. While a freshman at Mississippi State University, on a football scholarship, when he joined the U.S. Marines. 
 

Mr. Thornton served in the Pacific with the 1st and 3rd Marine Division and was a drill instructor at Paris Island in South Carolina. He also served on a peace keeping mission in China. 
 

Mr. Thornton served with the 1st Marine Division in Korea with the 155th Howitser Battalion, Battery C and retired as a sergeant. 
 

He begin his sales career with Owen Brothers Packing Co. and retired from Bill's Institutional Commissary in Flowood after 25 years in sales. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, an avid Mississippi State sports fan and member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. 
 

Survivors include a son, Clarke Thornton III of Meridian; daughters, Annell Holland and her husband, Mitch, of Flora, Sharon Shephard and her husband, Elvin, of Butler, Ala., and Marsha Hannah and her husband, Bubba, of Meridian; a sister, Sarah Vining of Meridian; grandchildren, Angela Logan of Pearl, Shea Shephard of Birmingham, Emily Shephard of Butler and Trey and Dallas Hannah of Meridian; several nieces, nephews and countless special friends and family. 
 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarke Thornton Sr. and Regina Perry Thornton; and a sister, Regina Thornton.

Mr. Wright, 77, of Meridian, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Guardian Angel Hospice. He was the retired owner of General Merchandise Store and a retired employee of General Box Co. He was a member of the Longstreet Masonic Lodge, 268 and a member of the Arkadelphia Baptist Church and the Mens Brotherhood of the church. Honorably discharged from the U.S. Army 3rd Battalion, 137th Infantry regiment, he served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardenne, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Victory Ribbon, the American Theatre Campaign Medal, the Service Medal with five bronze stars and a Purple Heart. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Maddox Harbour Wright of Meridian; two daughters, Cathy Stephenson and her husband, Bob, and Linda Hosey all of Meridian; two sons, Roger Wright of Meridian and Robert Wright of Bailey; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Johnny Daniels of Meridian; and three stepchildren, Hal Harbour and Jackie Roberts and her husband, David, all of Meridian and Milton Harbour of DeKalb.

Mr. Porter, 76, of Meridian, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in Meridian. He was born in Key West, Fla., on June 6, 1925. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he attended Mississippi State University where he graduated in 1949. He and his wife of 55 years, Marcelle, spent 27 years in Union City, Tenn., where he developed an interest in HAM radio. He served as a scoutmaster, joined the Masons and became a deacon and Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church. After retiring from GMAC, he and his family moved to Natchez, where they spent 15 years before relocating to Meridian in 1996. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Marcelle C. Porter of Meridian; a son, Fred J. Porter and his wife, Debra, of Meridian; two grandsons, Will and Sam; a sister, Helen R. Porter of Doniphan, Mo.; a brother, Thomas E. Porter and his wife, Cynthia G., of Natchitoches, La.; eight nephews and six nieces. 
 

He was preceded in death by a brother, John B. Porter; and a sister, Margaret F. Hedleston.

He was a devoted husband and father. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief electronics technician having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Mr. Shankles, 58, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, in Enterprise. He was a machine tender for Georgia Pacific.

PHILADELPHIA -- Services for George McPherson will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Young officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery. McClain-Hays Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mr. McPherson, 71, of Columbus, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus. He was born in Monroe, La., and spent his early childhood in Vicksburg. He spent the last part of his childhood and adult life in Gulfport. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. 
 

Survivors include a daughter, Sherrill Ann McAlpin of Columbus; sons, George Randall McPherson of Greenville and Robert Lee McPherson of Union; grandchildren, Christopher James McPherson, Elizabeth Christine McAlpin, Joshua Lee McAlpin, Jesse Galen McPherson, Meghan Leigh McPherson and Daniel Scott McAlpin; a sister, Geraldine Adelle Goodner and her husband, Lee, of Cabool, Mo.; a brother, John Melvin McPherson of Delhi, La. 
 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Elizabeth Bishop McPherson in 1993; and brother, Edwin Elmore Riley McPherson.

WILLIAM HAROLD WEBB SR.

NEWTON -- Services for William Harold Webb Sr. will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Decatur United Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy Owen officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery. Barham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mr. Webb, 82, of Decatur, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Bedford Care Center in Newton. Mr. Harold, as most people affectionately knew him, was born Dec. 27, 1919, the youngest of eight children, to John and Minnie Webb of Decatur. He was a veteran, a shriner, but to most everyone, he was known as an honest politician and loyal friend. Harold was married to Mary Nell King and they had three children. 
 

Those of you that knew Harold are aware of his love and dedication to his beloved Decatur and Newton County. He was elected circuit clerk in 1948 and held the office until 1968. He then ran for and was elected Newton County chancery clerk, an office he held until his retirement in 1983. 
 

After his retirement, he was appointed Newton County Youth Court Referee and served until 1990. He was a very active member of Decatur United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher and lay minister for many years. He was active in the American Legion, Masonic Lodge and a charter member and past president of the Decatur Lions Club. 
 

In 1989, he was chosen Man of the Year by the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce, an organization he served in as president. 
 

He was a past master and a 50-year member of Evergreen Lodge #77, F&AM. He was a member of the York Right Bodies and commander, Newton Commandery, Knights Templar #27 and a member of the Shriners Hamasa Temple in Meridian. Harold was a member of the American Legion Newton County Post #89, where he served as a past commander. He was appointed by President Richard M. Nixon as a member of the Advisory Committee to the National Commission of Veteran Affairs. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Nell Webb of Decatur; a son, Bill Webb, of Gulfport; daughters, Pam Jackson of Philadelphia and her husband, Mack; Tammy Dilorenzo of Long Beach and her husband, Ben; Grandchildren, Cassidy Elliott and her husband Chris, David and Hank Jackson, Adam and Emily Dilorenzo; great grandchildren, Courtney and McKinley Elliott, Dekota, Angie and Kasie Jackson. 
 

He was preceded in death by his parents, John J. Webb and Minnie Richard Webb; brothers, Cortez, Oral, Eugene and Richard; and his sisters, Thelma and Linnie. 
 

Pallbearers will be Bill Breidinger, Homer Burton, Charles Boggan, Mark Miller, Chris Elliott and Don Waldrop. 
 

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Austin Boggan, Bill Rowzee, Hansel Reeves, Sidney Vanetten, Buddy Massey and Wilson Taylor. 
 

Visitation will be today 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

DENVER, Colo. -- Services for Dr. John J. "Jack" Kluk will be held Thursday in Denver. 
 

Dr. Kluk, a former resident of Meridian, died Saturday, April 27, 2002. 
 

Survivors include his wife Linda; three daughters, Melanie, Larissa and Tiffany; two grandsons; a sister, Anne Copeland Mattrick of Harrisburg, Pa., formerly of Meridian; two nieces and three nephews.

Mrs. Johnson, 80, of Meridian, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Beverly HealthCare-Broadmoor. She was a retired teacher with the Meridian Public Schools and a member of First Baptist Church. 
 

Survivors include two brothers, John C. Oden of Meridian and Arthur W. Oden and his wife, Miriam, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; sisters, Lorena McGrew, Reva Doris Brown and Birdie Holloway, all of Meridian, Lucy Henry of South Port, N.C., Jimmie Lee Mercer and her husband, Wesley, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Betty Jean Lindsay of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herchul V. Johnson; her parents, Sam and Maggie Oden; and a brother, Thad Oden.

Ms. Henderson, 64, of Meridian, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at the University Medical Center in Jackson. 
 

Survivors include five sisters, Ruby Lee Chambers of Jackson, Mattie Thames and her husband, Lane, of Texas, Sadie Lockhart, Myrtis Fountain and Gracie Hogan, all of Meridian; brothers, Lester Henderson of Arizona, Leodis Henderson of Florida and Billy Henderson of Meridian; an aunt, Ruth Henderson of Meridian; and two uncles, Andrew Lee Henderson and C.W. Dubose of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews. 
 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleo Dubose Henderson and Jake Henderson; sisters, Lucille Henderson Hardaway and Patricia Henderson; and a brother, Joe Lee Henderson.
