She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Wolverton; and a son, Junior Wolverton.

PHILADELPHIA -- Services for David Spears will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Charles Rhodes and Jay Murphy officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery in the Stephenstown Community. 
 

Mr. Spears, 69, of Philadelphia, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a prisoner of war for two years. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Emma Louise Spears of Philadelphia; a daughter, Alicia Wooldridge of Union; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mavis Marshall of Philadelphia; and three brothers, Jimmie Spears of Biloxi and Robert Spears and Marion Spears, both of Philadelphia. 
 

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Delnita Stephens.

JACKSON -- Services for James Crowell Jaqua will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the High Street Chapel of Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Meridian. 
 

Mr. Jaqua, 91, of Jackson, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. A native of Hamond, Ind., he lived in Meridian most of his life before moving to Jackson in 1997. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 33 years. He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church and a former member of Poplar Springs Drive Baptist Church in Meridian. He was also a member of the Museum Lodge Number 636 F&AM and he was a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason. 
 

Survivors include two daughters, Linda J. Helms of Ulla, N.C. and Mae Garrett of Jackson; three grandchildren, Amy Coleman, Brian Hilligoss Steven Garrett and Jennifer Garrett Richardson; and three great-grandchildren, Mariah Coleman, Janna Coleman and Addie Coleman; and a sister, Rosalynn Brantley of Meridian.

Mr. Broadhead, 61, of Meridian, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at his home. He was a Mason and a well-known bail bondsman who held many offices in his district. He was a member of the Mississippi Bail Bondsman Association and owner of the Sandy Ridge Bluegrass Park. 
 

Survivors include his mother, Margaret Broadhead of Meridian; his wife, JoAnn Broadhead of Meridian; three daughters, Nita Joyce Preston of Between, Ga., Loretta Holmes and her husband Steve, of Loganville, Ga., and Debbie Jo Thrash and her husband, Gary, of Collinsville; two sons, James Broadhead of Meridian and Darrell Fuller and his wife, Brenda, of Bailey; two brothers, Robert Broadhead and his wife, Shirley, of Toomsuba and Earl Broadhead and his wife, Nan, of Suqualena; and 10 grandchildren.

Mr. Moree, 93, of Meridian, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. He was born in Williamsburg, S.C., and was a former resident of Lancaster, S.C. He lived 35 years in Gastonia. He and his wife ran a mission for the needy in Gastonia for years. Mr. Moree was a member of Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church.

MIRIAM QUINN SIMMONS 

Former state legislator 
 

COLUMBIA -- Miriam Quinn Simmons, 73, a former state legislator and member of the State College Board, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, in her home. 
 

Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Columbia. Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mrs. Simmons was the daughter of the late Charles Buford Quinn and Viola Hamill Quinn of Forest and the widow of the late Willie W. Simmons of Columbia. 
 

Survivors include two son, Richard "Dick" Simmons and Wronal Simmons of Columbia; her daughter, Sue Simmons Welch of Ridgeland; and a grandson, Wyatt Simmons of Columbia. 
 

She was the valedictorian of Forest High School Class of 1945. She attended Belhaven College and transferred to Mississippi State College for Women (now Mississippi University for Women) and graduated cum laude in 1949 with a degree in home economics education. While at the W, she was a member of several organizations including Mortar Board, Phi Upsilon Omicron, Kappa Delta Epsilon, Home Economics Club and Wesley Foundation. She also took graduate courses at the University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi State University. 
 

She moved to Columbia in the fall of 1949 to teach home economics where she resided until the time of her death. She taught home economics at the Columbia City Schools, Marion County Schools, Columbia Training School and Columbia Academy. 
 

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Columbia and the Homebuilders Sunday School Class and was a past president of the class as well as substitute teacher. She served in the past as the Adult Superintendent, Youth Superintendent and a Sunday School teacher in the Children's Division. She had served on the Board of Trustees and was a former chairman of the missions work area. She had served as a member and past chairman of the administrative ( official) board and the Staff Parrish committee and had represented the church as its official delegate at the Mississippi Methodist Conference for several years. She was active in and had chaired many committees of the United Methodist Women. She also served as a board member for the Methodist Children's Home. 
 

Mrs. Simmons was active in many community and state civic activities throughout her life. She was past president of Pine Needle Garden Club and Hilltop Garden Club and served as the president of the Mississippi Federated Women's Clubs from 1968-70 and was successful in lobbying the Legislature for the funding to begin Educational Television. She was a member of the Mississippians for Educational Broadcasting and served as secretary for the Foundation for Public Broadcasting Board. She served as member and past president of the Columbia Junior Auxiliary. She was honored by the Junior Auxiliary in 1981 as the Marion County Outstanding Citizen at its annual ball. She served on the Mississippi Division Board of the American Cancer Society for a six-year term. She was a member of the Mississippi Humanities Council and was a member of the Mississippi University for Women Alumni Board and the Foundation Board as well as a member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators. She was also a member of the Columbia Business and Professional Women's Club and a member of the Marion County and Mississippi Forestry Association. 
 

In 1972 she was named by Gov. William "Bill" L. Waller to a 12-year term on the Institutions of Higher Learning (State College Board) and was president of the Board from 1980-81, the first woman to hold that position. While serving on the College Board, she was its representative to the Mississippi Authority for Educational Television Board serving as secretary, vice-president and president again was the first woman to serve as the president of this board. While on the College Board, she received the first Medal of Excellence awarded by Mississippi University for Women in 1979. As her term was expiring in 1984, the Administration Building at MUW was named Simmons Hall in her honor in 1984. Due to structural defects, it had to be demolished several years later. She was again honored by her alma mater with the rededication of Hastings Hall as Hastings-Simmons Hall in 1992 which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 
 

In 1987 she was the first woman from Marion County to be elected to the State Legislature to the House of Representatives representing District 100 for 12 years (three terms). While in the Legislature she served on the following committees. Banks and Banking, Education, Public Utilities, Judiciary B and Universities and Colleges. She was chosen by her peers as Chairman of the Women of the Legislature for both the House and Senate. While a member of the Legislature, she supported legislation that dealt with education, help for abused women and children for which she received an award for lifetime service and dedication in behalf of Mississippi's children, funding for the rural firefighters for which she received recognition for her commitment to the preservation of life and property from the ravages of fire from the Mississippi Firefighters Association.

Mrs. Savell, 55, of Lake, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. 
 

She was born on June 28, 1946, to the late Virgil Madison Roebuck and Birtie Meeks Roebuck. The Newton County native was a 1963 honor graduate of Union High School in Union. She also attended East Central Junior College in Decatur before attending the University of Southern Mississippi. She graduated with honors in 1967 with a bachelor of science degree in English and journalism. She later received her master's degree from Mississippi State University in 1981. 
 

Her teaching career spanned a tenure of more than 32 years that began in 1967 and ended in 1999. Mrs. Savell taught for the Union Public School System in Newton, Clarke Memorial College in Newton and East Central Community College in Decatur. 
 

She was a member of the Mississippi Professional Educator's Association and other various civic organizations. 
 

She was a member of Hazel Baptist Church in Lake. 
 

Survivors include her husband, whom she wed on June 22, 1973, D. Marcus "Mark" Savell; one daughter, Jennifer Lynn Savell; three sons, James M. "Jim" Savell, William R. Savell and Robert W. Savell; mother-in-law, Winnie Pierce Savell; two aunts, several special cousins and many friends.

Mrs. Myers, 81, of Newton, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. 

She lived most of her life in the Goodhope Community near Lake and moved to Newton 15 years ago. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church 

Survivors include her daughter, Eva Carol Goff of Wade; one son, Billy Myers of DeKalb; one sister, Mary Pace of Newton; one brother, George "Buddy" Mabry of Lake; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Myers in 1975.

Mr. Parker, 62, of Philadelphia, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his home. 

Survivors include his wife, Portia Parker of Philadelphia; four daughters, Miranda McGee of Philadelphia, Kimberly Winters of Louisville, Carol Winters of Philadelphia and Theresa Wiggs of Union; three sons, Bobby, Jerome and Dewayne Parker, all of Philadelphia; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mary Burt of Toomsuba, and Mildred McCullum of Dalewood; and four brothers, Jimmy, Paul and David Parker, all of Philadelphia, and Bobby W. BIRTIE LYNN ROEBUCK SAVELL

NEWTON -- Services for Birtie Lynn Roebuck Savell will be held today at 3 p.m. at Hazel Baptist Church with the Revs. Randall Creel, Dr. Leon Everett, Clifton Thornton, Reggie Williams, Michael J. Fondren Sr., and Curtis Cain officiating. Burial will be in Hazel Baptist Church Cemetery with James F. Webb Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. 

Music for the service will be rendered by Marion Felton. Musicians for the service will be Tanya Phillips, pianist, and Brenda Creel, organist. 

Mrs. Savell, 55, of Lake, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. 

She was born on June 28, 1946, to the late Virgil Madison Roebuck and Birtie Meeks Roebuck. The Newton County native was a 1963 honor graduate of Union High School in Union. She also attended East Central Junior College in Decatur before attending the University of Southern Mississippi where she graduated with honors in 1967 where she later received a master's degree in English and journalism. 

Her teaching career spanned a tenure of more than 32 years ending in 1999. Mrs. Savell taught for the Union Public School System, the Newton Public School System, Clarke Memorial College and East Central Community College. 

She was a member of the Mississippi Professional Educator's Association and other various civic organizations. 

She was a member of Hazel Baptist Church in Lake. 

Survivors include her husband, whom she wed on June 22, 1973, D. Marcus "Mark" Savell of Lake; one daughter, Jennifer Lynn Savell of Lake; three sons, James M. "Jim" Savell, William R. Savell and Robert W. Savell, all of Lake; mother-in-law, Winnie Pierce Savell of Union; two aunts, several special cousins and many friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil Madison Roebuck and Birtie Meeks Roebuck, and her father-in-law, the Rev. Didymus D. Savell.

Mr. Roberts, 85, of Gilbertown, Ala., died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his home. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. 

Survivors include his wife, Lillian M. Roberts of Gilbertown; one son, Jimmy Roberts of Butler; and one daughter, Voncile Pearce of Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Mrs. Herrington, 80, of Winston County, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at her home. She was a member of Ellison Ridge Baptist Church. 

Survivors include her daughter, Frances Hurt of Louisville; one son, James Walter Hurt of Phoenix City, Ala.; four sisters, Mildred McLeod, Maxine Hurt, Miron Hill and Margaret Rogers, all of Louisville; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Mazingo, 83, of Meridian, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. 

She was a member of Bonita United Methodist Church, owner and operator of Mazingo Grocery Store, an assistant postmistress at Bonita, a member of the Dorcas Sunday School class and a member of the administrative board of her church. 

Survivors include her son, Larry Mazingo and his wife, Martha, of Meridian; daughter, Barbara Ann House and her husband, John "Scoot" of Meridian; four grandchildren, Dennis Mazingo and his wife Dee, Leslie Jenkins and her husband Jay, Dana Davis and her husband Charles, and Tiffany Hinson and her husband Ty; five great-grandchildren, Kyle Espey, Tyler and Saylor Henson, Blane Davis and Anna Kate Mazingo; one brother, Richard Ward and his wife, Sue, of Bay St. Louis; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.L. Mazingo. 

The family requests that memorials be made to Bonita United Methodist Church. 

Visitation will be Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
