Mr. Carr, 83, of Shubuta, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Rush Foundation
Hospital. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

Edward Carr of Hattiesburg and David Amos Carr of Quitman; a brother, Roger

GRETCHEN KENNEDY COALSON
QUITMAN -- Services for Gretchen Kennedy Coalson will be held today
at 11 a.m. at Wright's Funeral Home. A memorial service will also be held
Friday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Biloxi.
Mrs. Coalson died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center
in Rockport, Maine. In May she moved to Maine from her longtime home in
Biloxi to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
She was born June 10, 1919, and grew up in Clarke County. She graduated
from Pachuta High School and attended William Carey College, before graduating
from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Mrs. Coalson lived and taught school in Kemper and Washington counties
before settling in Biloxi in 1958. She taught in the Biloxi School System
until her retirement in 1980. She was an active member of First Baptist
Church of Biloxi for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Coalson Wendt and her husband, James,
a grandson, Charles Norman Wendt and his wife, Kelley McCarty Wendt; a
granddaughter, Gretchen Ann Wendt; and a brother, J. Hardee Kennedy; several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Edgar Coalson; parents,
James R. and Henrietta Kennedy; sisters, Alice Mae Walker, Adrian Dove
and Gertrude Dorman; and brothers, Ferrell Kennedy and Ed Kennedy.

Mrs. Little, 92, of Meridian, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Riley
Hospital. Born in Prentiss, Mrs. Little was the former president of Judge
Little Sporting Goods Inc. in Meridian and Jackson, a corporation founded
by her late husband.
During her lifetime, Mrs. Little was involved in many areas of work
and service in church, civic, business and educational endeavors. As a
founder and charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Meridian,
she made significant contributions toward local and foreign mission work.
Locally she served as a board member and volunteer for Meals on Wheels
and LOVE's Kitchen, East Mississippi State Hospital and in many other community
programs. Her foreign mission work included trips to Haiti and Central
America to build churches, schools and homes. She was a motivating force
at her church toward sponsorship of a refugee Vietnamese family.
At Trinity, she served at the first female elder and as the first president
of the Women of the Church, president of Interfaith Council of Churches
in Meridian and in many positions within the district, state and Synod
of Presbyterian Church (USA).
She served as head of the Red Cross campaign and was a board of trustees
member of Chamberlain-Hunt Academy in Port Gibson, Stillman College in
Tuscaloosa, Ala., and for Friends of Meridian Community College. She was
a member of the Junior Auxiliary, where she served as an active member
and as a Royalty Queen.
Her interest in education led her in establishing a scholarship fund
at Mississippi State University's business school in memory of her husband,
a Sports Hall of Fame inductee at Mississippi State, and also a scholarship
fund at Meridian Community College. Mrs. Little was a graduate of Woman's
College, now William Carey, in Hattiesburg.
Survivors include three children, H. Stennis Little Jr. of Nashville,
Tenn., Dr. Thomas Dale Little of Meridian and Patricia Jane Culpepper of
Greenville; nine grandchildren, Dr. Richard Dale Culpepper of Huntsville,
Ala., Tanza Culpepper Farr of Nashville, Kathryn Ann Little Francis of
Nashville, Paul Everett Culpepper of Hickory, N.C., Thomas Dale Little
Jr. and Hampton Judge Little, both of Meridian, Jane Lyle Culpepper Byars
of Oxford, Michael Stennis Little of Starkville and Reginald Barton Little
of Starkville; a sister, Mary Dale Wasson of Madison; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lillie and Reginald Dale;

ESIN SURMELI
JACKSON -- Esin Surmeli, 39, a senior software developer, died Sunday,
Dec. 30, 2001, at Ege University Hospital in Izmir, Turkey.
A memorial service and reception to honor and celebrate his life will
be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Jackson.
Mr. Surmeli was born on Jan. 5, 1962, in Samandag, Turkey, and moved
to the United States when he was 22 years old. He was a long time resident
of Long Island, N.Y., and had lived in Mississippi for five years.
He graduated with honors from Istanbul Technical University in 1982
with a degree in electrical engineering and received his master's degree
with honors in computer science from the New York Institute of Technology
in 1986. He was employed by FNC, Inc., in Oxford as a senior software developer
and he loved every minute of his work. He was a loving husband, son, brother
and a good friend to all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Amy Surmeli; his mother, Kerime Surmeli
of Turkey; four brothers, Rasim and Coskun Surmeli, both of Berlin, Germany,
Ilhan Surmeli of Irvine, Calif., and Metin Surmeli of Turkey; three sisters,
Tulin, Birsen and Suzane, all of Turkey; his mother- and father-in-law,
Danny and Pat Holloway of Meridian; and many nieces and nephews.
His father, Suleyman Surmeli, preceded him in death.

during World War II. She retired from the Foster Grandparents Programs
in 1998 and was one of its oldest volunteers.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen Schneider of Kenosha, Wis.; a nephew,
Donald Heiden of Meridian; a granddaughter, Anna Schneider of Nashville;
and a grandson, Hans Schneider of Las Cassas, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Napier; and a grandson,

He served as pastor of Goodwater Baptist Church for 10 years, preceded

and Liberty Charity.
Mr. Cooley also served as a supervisor of maintenance and grounds for
La-Z Boy South. He was a retired master sergeant from the 186th Air Refueling
Wing of the Air National Guard. During his Guard service, Cooley received
the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force
Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity
Service Award Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship
Ribbon and the Air Force Training Ribbon.
He served in the 3rd Batallion, First Marines, in 1969 including a tour
of duty in Vietnam. During his Marine service, Cooley received the Purple
Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Cross of
Gallantry, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda; two daughters, Michelle Robinson

JACKSON -- Esin Surmeli, 39, a senior software developer, died Sunday,
Dec. 30, 2001, at Ege University Hospital in Izmir, Turkey.
A memorial service and reception to honor and celebrate his life will
be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Jackson.
Mr. Surmeli was born on Jan. 5, 1962, in Samandag, Turkey, and moved
to the United States when he was 22 years old. He was a longtime resident
of Long Island, N.Y., and had lived in Mississippi for five years.
He graduated with honors from Istanbul Technical University in 1982
with a degree in electrical engineering and received his master's degree
with honors in computer science from the New York Institute of Technology
in 1986. He was employed by FNC, Inc., in Oxford as a senior software developer
and he loved every minute of his work. He was a loving husband, son, brother
and a good friend to all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Amy Surmeli; his mother, Kerime Surmeli
of Turkey; four brothers, Rasim and Coskun Surmeli, both of Berlin, Germany,
Ilhan Surmeli of Irvine, Calif., and Metin Surmeli of Turkey; three sisters,
Tulin, Birsen and Suzane, all of Turkey; his mother- and father-in-law,
Danny and Pat Holloway of Meridian; and many nieces and nephews.
His father, Suleyman Surmeli, preceded him in death.

a local and general chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He

and was also a Gideon.

Mr. Dykes, 76, of Butler, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Jeff Anderson

Randall R. Dykes of Fayetteville, N.C., Gregory A. Dykes of Oxford and
William D. Dykes of Butler; a brother, David H. Dykes and two sisters,

Mr. Ethridge, 76, of Collinsville, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, in his
home. Mr. Ethridge, a loving husband, father and grandfather, was an avid
sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He retired from Ryder P.I.E.
in 1989 after 33 years. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World
War II and was a member of Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ernestine McMullan Ethridge
of Collinsville; two sons, Leslie M. Ethridge of Port Barre, La., and Mitchell
Ethridge of Collinsville; a daughter, Mitzi South and her husband, Jerry,
of Hueytown, Ala.; two grandsons, Keith Ethridge and his wife, Candace,
of Birmingham, Ala., and Jamison Ethridge and his wife, Sherrie, of Jacksonville,
N.C.; two granddaughters, Courtney Hatten and her husband, Jeff, of Destin,
Fla., and Brittany Ethridge of Baton Rouge, La.; two great-grandchildren,
Kendall Hatten of Destin and Chase Ethridge of Jacksonville; two brothers,
Claiborne Ethridge and his wife, Madge, of Collinsville and Edwin Ethridge
and his wife, Linda, of Little Rock; a sister-in-law, Bernice Ethridge
of Pekin, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Les and Elma Ethridge; two
brothers, Truman and Talmadge Ethridge; and a sister, Mildred Ethridge.
Pallbearers will be Freeman Powell, Gerard Ethridge, Bill McKinion,
Jimmy Castle, Thomas Brooks, Paul George, Dock Davis and Carey Parker.
Honorary pallbearers will be James Crenshaw, Charles Mosley, Wayne Roberts,
Aubert Poole and Herbert Herrington.

Mrs. Bedford, 53, of Meridian, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, in her home.
She was a retired chief petty officer serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy
as a counselor. She served in Vietnam and Desert Storm. Mrs. Bedford was
a member of the Meridian Civitan Club.
Survivors include her husband, Deward Wayne Bedford of Meridian; two
brothers, Gary Hazelwood of Eden, N.C., and Charles Hazelwood of Danville,
