Mrs. Harworth, 75, of Meridian, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Guardian
Angel Hospice in Marion. She was retired from Winn-Dixie and a member of
New Covenant United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her children, Larry James Harworth and his fiance,
Michelle Loewen of Warren, Mich., Sharon Louise McDonald and her fiancé,
Allen Wade, and Sandra Crawford and her husband, Brad, all of Meridian;
a grandson, Bradley J. Crawford II; a brother, A.G. James of Morton; two
sisters, Lyda Alice Burnham of Puckett, Lillie Mae Burnham and her husband,
Henry, of Ft. Worth, Texas; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Swan Harworth.
Memorials may be made to New Covenant United Methodist Church or Guardian
Angel Hospice.

Mr. Meyer, 30, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, in Columbia. He was a former
mechanic at Dave's Garage and attended Mercy Cross High School.

and Joyce Meyer of Biloxi; sisters, Lynn James of Memphis, Tenn., Shelby

Ms. Smith, 95, of Meridian, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at In His Hands
Hospice of Meridian. Ms. Smith was a retired teacher with the Meridian
Public School District. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Meridian.
Survivors include two nephews, John Harold Smith of Carthage and Turner
Smith of Philadelphia.

Mr. Cheatham, 82, of Philadelphia, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, in his
home. He was retired superintendent for Perry Construction Company. He
was a veteran of World War II.

Randy Cheatham of Philadelphia and Dwight Cheatham of Olive Branch; four
grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister, Johnnie Ruth Whinery

Mrs. Scott of Meridian, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Jeff Anderson
Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Atlanta and had lived in Meridian
for the last 39 years.
She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder
on the session and was active in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) at the
Presbytery level. She served in many capacities in Presbyterian Women at
Trinity and was active in organizing LOVE's Kitchen.
Mrs. Scott served on the board of directors for the Lauderdale County
Mental Health Association and was an active volunteer with Care Lodge.
She was past president of the Ben Arthur Davis Garden Club and an original
member of the Tuesday Reading Club.
Survivors include her husband, Harvey A. Scott of Meridian; a daughter,
Ann Sikes of Roswell, Ga.; sons, Harvey L. Scott and his wife, Linda, of
Meridian, and Harold Scott and his wife, Donna, of Warner Robins, Ga.;
grandchildren, Lorie Durant and her husband, Herb, of Meridian, Joe Scott
and his wife, Jeanne Marie, of Mobile, Ala., Chuck Dillehay and his wife,
Kim, of Marietta, Ga., Susan Vamous and her husband, Mike, of Avondale
Estates, Ga., Melissa Roche and her husband, Leo, of Macon, Ga., and Noella
Scott of Warner Robins; a sister, Virginia Kinchen of Avondale Estates;
a sister-in-law, Joette B. Greene of Lilburn, Ga.; eight great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph C. and Ruby T. Greene

Mr. Lavender, 79, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, in Atlanta. He was born
in Binnsville and graduated from Kemper County High School. He later graduated
from East Mississippi Junior College before joining the Army.
He and his family moved to Boligee in 1940 where he farmed for a while
and then went into sales, retiring in the early 1980's from Northrup-King
Company. He will be remembered for his sweet and giving nature and his
love of children.
Survivors include his four children, Tom Lavender and his wife, Sunee,
of Tuscaloosa, Rick Lavender of Boligee, Lisa Foley and her husband, Chuck,
of Marietta, Ga., and Dodie Lavender of Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren,
Chris and Ashley Hamilton of Memphis, Tenn., Meredith Lavender of Destin,
Fla., Chad Lavender of Tuscaloosa, and Nick and Grant Foley of Marietta;
three sisters, Mary Russell, Erma "Shug" Hitt of Boligee and Neenie Long
of Okalona; and a brother, Buddy Lavender of Boligee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Lavender; and
a sister, Ella "Snooks" Ozment.

Mrs. Hinton,96, of Meridian, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Kings
Daughter's and Sons Nursing Home. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian
Church and was a charter member of Oakland Heights Presbyterian Church
(now Westminster) where she served as president of Women of the church.
She was a member of Eastern Star 241, and served as a worthy matron.
Mrs. Hinton received her bachelor of arts degree in English from MSCW
in 1927 and earned her master's degree in education from the University
of Southern Mississippi. She attended Meridian School of Music. She retired
as a teacher from Oakland Heights School in 1970. She also taught at Long
Creek, Center Hill Schools and also taught in Tennessee and North Carolina.
Survivors include her sons, Mallie Vernon Hinton Jr. of Meridian, William
Spears Hinton and his wife, Susan, of Gulfport; a daughter, Frances Hinton
of Meridian; a sister, Mary Faye Rhodes of Everett, Wash.; and four nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Spears Buchanan and
Fannie Alford Buchanan; two brothers, Joseph Spears Buchanan Jr. and Winfield
Featherstone Buchanan.

Mrs. Stokes, 79, of Springfield, Mo., died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at
Maranatha Lodge Nursing Home. She was born in Winston County, Mississippi.
She lived in Yazoo City from 1949 until 1993 when she and her husband,
Ray, moved to Springfield, Mo. to live next door to their daughter.
She lived a Christ-centered life. She was known for her gift of encouragement
to others. Sweet, gentle and kind are words that fall short to describe
her life of giving to others. She will be missed dearly by her family and
everyone who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Ray Stokes, of Springfield,
Mo.; a daughter, Arlene Stokes Patterson and her husband, Bob Patterson,
of Springfield; sons, Dr. Billy Stokes and his wife, Beverly, of Birmingham,
Ala., and Chuck Stokes and his wife, Judy, of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother,

LOUISVILLE -- Mary Jane Lyle, well-known interior designer, died Saturday,
April 27, 2002, in Corinth on her 90th birthday.
The daughter of Joseph William Lyle and Lula Mae Brown Lyle, she was
born in Lauderdale County and lived most of her life in Louisville. She
was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Joseph William "Jodie"
Lyle Jr., and a sister, Elizabeth "Libba" Lyle Ray.
Survivors include her brother, Jack Brown Lyle of Birmingham, Ala.;
four nieces; a nephew; and several great-nieces and nephews who fondly
remember her as "Janie."
She attended Judson College, where she pursued a degree in art and graduated
from the University of Mississippi, transferring there when she was told
that teaching was the only career for a woman in her day. She was a member
of Phi Mu Sorority. However, her teaching career was short-lived when the
principal at Louisville High School told her in her first year that, 'teachers
are not allowed to dance.' She promptly hung out her shingle for "Mary
Jane's," enjoying a career in interior design for more than 60 years.
Her shop quickly became a mecca for clients from a wide area for selecting
fabrics, home furnishings, antiques and accessories that she carefully
and artfully chose and arranged. Her genius in the field of color was recognized
early in her career and became her trademark. She decorated many homes,
offices and businesses throughout the South and was awarded the prestigious
honor of becoming a lifetime member of the American Society of Interior
Designers.
A graveside memorial service will be held in Louisville on Saturday,
June 8, at 11:30 a.m. at the Masonic Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home of Louisville

Mr. Emerson, 70, of Meridian, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, in Meridian.
He was a self-employed brick mason.
Survivors include his wife, Julia B. Williamson-Emerson of Meridian;
five sons, Jimmie Emerson Jr. of Newellton, La., Carl Emerson, Kenney Emerson
and his wife, Lisa, Louis Ray Emerson and his wife Johnnie Ray, and Kevin
Troy Emerson and his wife, Juarrzie, all of Meridian; three daughters,
Phyllis Johnson of Houston, Texas, Regina King of Quitman and Carolyn Emerson
of Peoria, Ill.; four brothers, Albert Emerson and Henry Emerson, both
of Meridian, Ray Emerson of Las Vegas and Wayne Emerson of Bailey; three
sisters, Elois Ellis of Youngstown, Ohio, Doris Louis of Petersburg, Va.,
and Joyce Coleman of Compton, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ada Welch and Oscar Emerson.

Ms. Kirksey, 60, of Quitman, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, in her home.
She was a retired United States Postal worker.

of Bronx, N.Y.; a son, Mark Heyliger of Statesboro, Ga.; four sisters,
Jerlean Kirksey of Quitman, Ora Ingram of Freehold, N.J., Betty House of
Springfield, N.Y., and Della Jordan of Detroit; four brothers, Tillman
Kirksey Jr., and Edward Kirksey, both of Hattiesburg, Monroe Kirksey of
Quitman and Johnny Kirksey of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mr. Cummings, 86, of Meridian, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at his home.
He was a retired engineering supervisor for the United States Postal Service
and the recipient of numerous Outstanding Achievement Awards.
Survivors include a son, George H. Cummings Jr. and his wife, Patricia,
of Bayonne, N.J.; a daughter, Barbara Nichols and her husband, Ed, of Holyoke,
Mass.; his grandchildren, Babette Deering, Wendy Nichols, Adam Bradley
Cummings and Justin Cummings; his great-grandchildren, Michael Deering,
Jennifer Deering and Caitlin Deering; a sister, Alice Stewart; and two
brothers, Paul Cummings and Roger Cummings.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen DeVilliere Cummings in 1984;
and two sisters, Ola Lee Webb and Nettie Galyean.

Mr. Lavender, 79, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, in Atlanta. He was a retired
farmer, and salesman for Northrup-King Company. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Army.
Survivors include his children, Tom Lavender and his wife, Sunee, of
Tuscaloosa, Rick Lavender of Boligee, Lisa Foley and her husband, Chuck,
of Marietta, Ga. and Dodie Lavender of Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren;

Neenie Long of Okalona, Miss.; a brother, Buddy Lavender of Boligee.

Mr. Tucker, 70, of Meridian, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Jeff Anderson
Regional Medical Center. He was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator,
working many years in construction of roads and pipe lines. .He was a member
of Trinity Assembly of God and the U.S. Army Reserve for over 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Jewel Dean Tucker of Meridian; a son, Ira
Gene Tucker and his wife, Christina, of Meridian; a daughter, Carol Lang
of Meridian; grandchildren, Marie Nicholas and her husband, Allen, of Bay
St. Louis, Samuel Lang and his wife, Lacey, Matthew Tucker, Daniel Tucker
and April Lang, all of Meridian; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Johnson,
Jasmine Lang and Anastasia Nicholas.
He was preceded in death by his father Henry and step mother, Maudie
Tucker, his mother, Myrtle Atkins and step-father, Ray Atkins; a brother,
Tom Tucker; a sister, Eunice Sullivan, son-in-law, William Lang; father
and mother-in-law, Clarence and Emma Sullivan.

Services for Elsie B. Hinton will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Stephens
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Horel officiating. Burial will
be in Magnolia Cemetery.
Mrs. Hinton,96, of Meridian, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Kings
Daughter's and Sons Nursing Home. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian
Church and was a charter member of Oakland Heights Presbyterian Church
(now Westminster) where she served as president of Women of the church.
She was a member of Eastern Star 241, and served as a worthy matron.
Mrs. Hinton received her bachelor of arts degree in English from MSCW
in 1927 and earned her master's degree in education from the University
of Southern Mississippi. She attended Meridian School of Music. She retired
as a teacher from Oakland Heights School in 1970. She also taught at Long
Creek, Center Hill Schools and also taught in Tennessee and North Carolina.
Survivors include her sons, Mallie Vernon Hinton Jr. of Meridian, William
Spears Hinton and his wife, Susan, of Gulfport; a daughter, Frances Hinton
of Meridian; a sister, Mary Faye Rhodes of Everett, Wash.; and four nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Spears Buchanan and
Fannie Alford Buchanan; two brothers, Joseph Spears Buchanan Jr. and Winfield
Featherstone Buchanan.
Memorials may be made to Palmer House or Meridian Symphony.

BESSIE LOUISE STOKES
Services for Bessie Louise Stokes will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at

Mrs. Stokes, 79, of Springfield, Mo., died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at
Maranatha Lodge Nursing Home. She was born in Winston County, Mississippi.
She lived in Yazoo City from 1949 until 1993 when she and her husband,
Ray, moved to Springfield, Mo. to live next door to their daughter.
She lived a Christ-centered life. She was known for her gift of encouragement
to others. Sweet, gentle and kind are words that fall short to describe
her life of giving to others. She will be missed dearly by her family and
everyone who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Ray Stokes, of Springfield,
Mo.; a daughter, Arlene Stokes Patterson and her husband, Bob Patterson,
of Springfield; sons, Dr. Billy Stokes and his wife, Beverly, of Birmingham,
Ala., and Chuck Stokes and his wife, Judy, of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother,
the Rev. Richmond Watkins and his wife, Odell, of Morton; six grandchildren,
six great-grandchildren, other special family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Fillmore Watkins and
Nellie Huff Watkins; brothers, Vincent "Cotton" Watkins and George Watkins.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Stokes Patterson, Josh Stokes, Joel Stokes,
Neil Melancon, Tom Batts, Charlie Wade, Dennis Foster, and Larry Stokes.
