Mrs. Bynum, 83, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, in Tallahassee.

Mr. Snowden, 76, of Marion, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, in his home. 
 

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Meridian and was a Mason. 
 

Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Snowden of Texas; a sister, Louise Smith of Bailey; and a host of nieces and nephews. 
 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cleo Snowden, his second wife, Verlia Snowden, and his third wife, Deloris Snowden.

Mrs. Mathis, 87, of Meridian, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Riley Hospital. 
 

Survivors include five sons, Thomas Mathis and his wife, Hollis, Doby Mathis and his wife, Dona, and Sammy Mathis and his wife, Teresa, all of Meridian, R.D. Mathis and his wife, Rosanelle, of Birmingham, Ala., and Richard Mathis and his wife, Barbara, of Poplarville; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Edgar Mathis; her mother, Mattie Cockrell; and a sister, Magalee Marcum.

AARON A. LOWREY 

Retired lieutenant with Mississippi Highway Patrol 
 

LOUISVILLE -- Services for Aaron A. "Tony" Lowrey will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Tilghman Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bobby Joe Butler and Keith Dendy officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. 
 

Mr. Lowrey, 45, of Louisville, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Noxubee County. 
 

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Starkville and the Dancing Rabbit Hunting Club. He was a retired major in the U.S. Army Reserve. Mr. Lowrey graduated from Winston Academy in 1974 and received a degree in physical education and health from Mississippi State University. He was active in the ROTC at Mississippi State University. 
 

After graduation, he pursued his lifelong goal of becoming a trooper with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. He was a physical trainer at the Mississippi Highway Patrol Academy where he trained over 1,000 law enforcement officers. 
 

In 1984, he transferred to the Starkville District Troop G, where he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant second in command. Prior to his retirement, he was active in karate, having received a third degree black belt. In 1991, he received the Outstanding State Employee of the Year award and the Outstanding Young Man of the Year Award. He also received recognition from the Mississippi State Senate. Due to medical illness, he retired in 1992. He was an avid hunter and loved his family and fellow man. 
 

Survivors include his mother, Hilda Null Lowrey of Louisville; a daughter, Sara Marie Lowrey of Madison; a sister, Janice Richardson of Preston; three brothers, Joseph H. Lowrey and Olyn Keith Lowrey of Louisville, and Murray L. Lowrey of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. 
 

He was preceded in death by his father, Aaron Olyn Lowrey, and an uncle, the Rev. James E. Lowrey. 
 

The family requests memorials be made to the Sara Marie Lowrey Educational Fund, Merchants and Farmers Bank, P.O. Box 1047, Ridgeland, MS 39158.

SYLVIA GRESSETT GRAY 
 

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Memorial services for Sylvia Gressett Gray will be held in New Rochelle on Monday. Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mrs. Gray was born in Meridian, Miss., on Sept. 1, 1930. She had been a resident of New Rochelle since 1961. She died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002. 
 

Mrs. Gray grew up in Meridian and received her associate's degree from Clark Memorial College. She received her bachelor's degree from Grand Canyon College and her master's from Arizona State University. 
 

After moving to New York she continued her education at Hunter College, Boston University and Redding University in England. She taught school, was a reading specialist, reading coordinator, acting principal and coordinator of the gifted and talented at Eastchester Public Schools in New York for 29 years. She retired in 1990. Mrs. Gray was also an educator for the College of New Rochelle and a mentor to many. 
 

Survivors include four children, Karen Jennewein, Byron Gray, Davis Gray and Donald Gray and seven grandchildren; a brother, Fred Gressett Jr. of Meridian; two sisters, Opal Dills of Vancleave and Kathleen Fontaine of Pensacola, Fla. 
 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Gressett Sr. and Annie Boswell Gressett. 
 

There are no words to express for how she will be missed by her family and friends. She was "Nana" to us all. She will be in our hearts and souls always. We love you mom and may you finally rest in peace. 
 

The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife, Gene Henley of Meridian; and a brother William Henley of Talbert, Tenn. 
 

He was proceeded in death by his first wife, Mae Henley; and a sister Pauline Mahalic.

Mrs. Mott, 96, of Newton, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Newton Regional Hospital. She was a retired cafeteria manager for Newton Elementary Schools and a homemaker. Mrs. Mott was born in Franklin County. She was a member of First Baptist Church for 82 years.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and in the South Pacific where he received the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, Presidential Citation of Merit and was decorated for service in four battle campaigns.

Christina Joy Herring and John Douglas Lundeen, both of Meridian, were married Saturday, June 2, 2001, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Elvin Sunds officiating. 
 

Parents of the couple are Cindy W. Herring of Atlanta, Larry J. Herring of Tuscumbia, Ala., Helen E. Massey of Meridian and Douglas D. Lundeen of Rapid City, S.D. 
 

Grandparents of the bride are Sarah D. Welch of Meridian, Mr. and Mrs. Ocel Herring of Tuscumbia and the late Jimmie Welch of Verona. 
 

Grandparents of the bridegroom are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lundeen of Huron, S.D., and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Lloyd "Bill" Massey II of Meridian. 
 

Music for the ceremony was provided by Michelle Williams Mayfield, vocalist; Sabrina Williams, organist; and Shawn Partridge, trumpeter. 
 

The bride was given in marriage by her parents. She wore a strapless white satin gown featuring a banded bust and hemline. The cathedral-length detachable train flowed from the pearl and crystal embellished bustline. Her beaded, triple-tiered veil of illusion fell from a tiara adorned with crystals and pearls. She carried a clutch bouquet of white roses. 
 

Maid of honor was Michelle Williams Mayfield of Clinton. Other attendants were Jill Hebert of Camden, Ala., Susan Pritchett of Aliceville, Ala., Heather Glass of Linden, Ala., LeAnne Lundeen Thrash of Meridian, sister of the bridegroom, and Jennifer Sanders of Langley, S.C. 
 

Emily Nicole Scott of Meridian, niece of the bride, was flower girl. 
 

Drew Ward Torgerson of Meridian served as best man. Groomsmen were Clint Pugh of Meridian, Seth Shaul of Tuscaloosa, Steven Mackin of Selma, Ala., Chad Thrash of Meridian, and Lance Herring of Augusta, Ga., brother of the bride. 
 

Ushers were Ben Shults of Meridian and Jason Cosgrove of Birmingham. Austin Taylor Scott and Alex Martin Scott, both of Meridian and nephews of the bride, were ring bearers. 
 

Program attendant was Tabitha Easterling Pugh. 
 

A reception was held the church's Family Life Center following the ceremony. 
 

Assisting at the reception were Hollie Ivey, Jessica Kirkpatrick, Renae Pugh and Monica Lowenstein. 
 

After a honeymoon in Destin, Fla., the couple resides in Birmingham. 
 

Herring feted with pre-wedding showers 
 

Prior to her June 2, 2001, wedding to John Douglas Lundeen, Christina Joy Herring was feted with several showers. 
 

The couple was honored with a miscellaneous shower and barbecue on May 4, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Torgerson. The event was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Torgerson and Drew Torgerson, all of Meridian, and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Huffaker of Atlanta. 
 

The hosts presented the couple a wicker basket filled with an assortment of items to be used for a barbecue at their new home. 
 

On May 6, Miss Herring was honored with a luncheon and miscellaneous shower at D.T. Grinder's Restaurant. Special guests were Cindy Herring and Sarah Welch, mother and grandmother of the bride, and Helen Massey, mother of the bridegroom. 
 

The event was hosted by Lynda Ott, Anne Glenn, Beverly Massey, Lisa Massey, Jackie Crawford and Eileen Soulé, aunts of the bridegroom. The hostesses presented the bride an assortment of gifts, including crystal and china in her chosen pattern. 
 

A rice bag party was held May 14 and hosted by Helen Massey and LeAnne Thrash, mother and sister of the bridegroom. It was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Glenn, aunt and uncle of the bridegroom. Supplies for making rice bags were placed around the table and, as each guest filled tulle squares with birdseed, the bags were tied with silver ribbon. 
 

Refreshments served and at the conclusion of the evening, the hostesses presented Miss Herring with crystal stemware in her chosen pattern.

50th anniversary 

Mr. and Mrs. Grady Chaney will be honored with a reception celebrating their 50th anniversary Saturday, Jan. 12, at Oakland Baptist Church in Decatur. The reception will be held from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. in the church fellowship building. Their children, Julia and Jackie Strebeck, Eugene and Wanda Chaney, Patsy and John Holyfield and grandchildren will host the event. The couple was married Jan. 12, 1952, at Hickory Baptist Church. 
 

50th anniversary 

Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Westbrook celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Christmas Eve with their family. The couple was married Dec. 22, 1951, in Clarke County. Mrs. Westbrook is the former Clora Cosby of Tishimingo.

JACKSON -- Services for Vivian Salvo McCrory Piazza will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church. Burial will be in Natchez City Cemetery at 3 p.m. Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mrs. Piazza, 80, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at St. Dominic Hospital. 
 

She was born and raised in Natchez and lived in Vicksburg for many years before moving to Jackson in 1959. Mrs. Piazza was a magna cum laude graduate of Loyola University, New Orleans, and retired from the University Medical Center where she was a research medical technologist. She was a long time communicant of St. Richard Catholic Church, where she was a member of the St. Gerald Majella Circle. 
 

Survivors include three sons, Ben J. Piazza Jr. and Preston D. Piazza, both of Jackson, and Michael G. Piazza of Gulfport; a daughter, Vijean Piazza Burden of Jackson; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben J. Piazza Sr. 
 

The family requests memorials be made to St. Richard Catholic Church in Jackson or St. Mary's Basilica in Natchez.

ANNIE LEE CARMICHAEL HIGHTOWER 
 

PASCAGOULA -- Services for Annie Lee Carmichael Hightower will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Church on the Rock with CDR James M. Hightower, Chaplain, USN and the Rev. Ernest Ruben Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Serene Memorial Gardens in Escatawpa with the Rev. Rodger Bradley officiating. O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mrs. Hightower, 88, of Gautier, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002. She was born Nov. 8, 1913, in Meridian, and had been a resident of Jackson County for 51 years. She was a member of First Assembly of God in Pascagoula and attended Church on the Rock in Pascagoula. She served with her husband in Assemblies of God pastoral ministries for 45 years in Mississippi and Alabama. She was very active as a Sunday school teacher, Women's Ministries leader, church pianist and a faithful devoted homemaker and mother. 
 

Survivors include a daughter, Jackie Anne Hightower Stiers and her husband, Tim, of Hinesville, Ga.; four sons, Thomas Lee Hightower and his wife, Barbara, of Moss Point; Wayne Hightower and his wife, Karen, of Pass Christian, Willie Mack Hightower of Gautier and James Monroe Hightower and his wife, Libby, of Jacksonville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, Richard Anthony Hightower, Michael Jared Hightower and his wife, Ann, James Stephen Hightower and his wife, Wendi, Joel Seth Stiers, Sherri LeAnn Hightower, Kala Denise Hightower, Lindsay Collette Hightower, Sarah Waynette Hightower, Regina Carol Hightower, Joy Abigail Stiers and Charity Elizabeth Stiers; several nieces, nephews and dear friends. 
 

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Faye Delores Hightower; her husband, the Rev. Ruben Thomas Hightower; her parents, Archibald Monroe and Florence Julia Carmichael; nine brothers and four sisters. 
 

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and Grady Campbell, E.L. Casey and Roy Crane.
