WILKES SERVICES HELD IN PRENTISS
Prominent Matron of Jefferson Davis County Passes; Was 93
PRENTISS, August 9 - Mrs. Martha O. Wilkes, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of Jeff Davis County, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. C. Burkett, south of Prentiss, and was buried at the Buckley Cemetery, after funeral services conducted by the Revs. Solon Walker, New Hebron, and L. E. Green, Prentiss. Mrs. Wilkes lacked but a few months being 93 years of age and had lived all her life in this county.
She had been since 15 years of age a devoted member of Bethany Church, south of Prentiss, uniting with the church under the pastorate of the Rev. Norvelle Robertson, who was pastor of this church for over 40 years. Her husband, who died many years ago, was A. J. Wilkes, a Confederate soldier. Immediate survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Lula Burkett, Prentiss; a stepdaughter, Mrs. I. E. Bass, Lumberton; two sisters, Mrs. Josie Mikell. Silver Creek; Mrs. A. J. Buckley, Clinton.
