James & James R. (Jimmerson) Liddell

   Jefferson County, Mississippi

Submitted by Bruce Delos Liddell, BDLiddell@yahoo.com

Child-naming conventions. The names of James Liddell’s sons should indicate James’s paternal ancestry. Possible ancestors are therefore limited to the names George, James, John, or Robert only.

Prehistory. Some sources state the Liddell family sprang from Strathclyde Britons, Celts who migrated from Ireland to southeast Scotland, and who gave their tribal name to the whole of Great Britain.

1400-1500 Most Europeans received surnames. “Liddell” came from the Dell (valley) of the Lid (loud) river about this time

1603 Scotland and England unified under one king, James Stuart VI / I. Scotland was the junior partner from the start, since England had 10 times more people and wealth. Lowland Scotland absorbed into U.K. in 1707.

1600 to 1800 James Liddell’s ancestors for a half dozen generations almost certainly lived in northern England or southern (lowland) Scotland. An arc drawn 100km (60 mi) from the Liddell River includes every ancestor family 1600-1800. (Ancestor family defined as two or more adults named George, James, John, or Robert in a single county or parish.

As pure speculation, possibly James and his family are on this list, every Liddell in the Scottish Book Trades Index (SBTI):

James Liddell apprentice printer 1676 Edinburgh

John Liddel bookseller 1728 to 1736 Falkirk

John Liddell bookseller 1779 to 1782 Glasgow

Robert & James Liddell paper makers 1787 near Glasgow

Robert Liddell paper maker 1792 near Glasgow

Robert Liddle coffee house (newspapers and food/drink) 1791 Glasgow

ca. 1766 (1765-1775) James born, probably southern Scotland. Gentry (middle-class) education in English grammar, spelling, penmanship, arithmetic, accounting, and other practical subjects.

1783 American Revolution ended with Treaty of Paris. Peacetime overseas trade resumed.

08-Jan-1788, Tuesday. After traveling to London, James age 21 received expensive two-volume Bible and inscribed his name and the place. This strongly suggests a father’s parting gift just before James emigrated to America.

All events 1788 to 1805 New York City NY unless specified.

ca. 1788 to ca. 1805 James employed as accountant (middle class status similar to CPA in 2002.)

Research question: Possible employer Bank of New York (est. 1784 by Alexander Hamilton.)

1790 to 1850 U.S. Federal Census, all states. No head of household matching James, Rebecca, Cornelia, Ebenezer, George, John, Robert, or Jimerson (except as below.) No records of marriage or death found (so far) except for Jimerson

ca. 1790 (1788-1792) James married Rebecca Verplanck

1790 Census, James Liddell head of household NYC Out Ward (north Manhattan)

1 adult man, white male over 16 [James]

1 white female [Rebecca?]

no slaves

Dec-1791 Rebecca pregnant.

05-Aug-1792 Robert John Liddell born. No Bible inscription page, probably removed after Robert John’s death.

Possibly RJ named for James’s father, uncle, and grandfather.

Aug-1793 Rebecca pregnant.

26-Mar-1794 Wednesday. RJ baptized at Trinity Anglican Ch.

29-May-1794 Cornelia Verplanck Liddell born. Bible entry “the 29 May 1794 at 35 minutes past 9 A-M” and Trinity Ch. records both agree on this date, but Trinity recorded her baptism with RJ’s the previous March.

CV named for Rebecca’s mother.

1794 or later. CV baptized at Trinity Anglican Ch. Date 26-Mar-1794 must be in error. Witnessed by Maria Verplanck, possibly Rebecca’s sister.

ca. 1795 (1794-1799) Robert John died.

ca. 1795 (1794-1797) James & Rebecca left Trinity for unknown sect. Long step down, socially. Possibly death of RJ a factor.

Jun-1796 Rebecca pregnant.

25-Mar-1797 Ebenezer George Liddell born. James’s entry “the 25 March 1797 at 20 minutes after 7 oClock P.M.” made at this time.

05-Jun-1797 Monday. EG baptized by Rev. George Wall, possibly at Ebenezer Meeting House. Wall not found (so far) in any list of American or British clergy 1790-1810.

Possibly EG named (by Rebecca?) for clergy Ebenezer [lnu] and George Wall.

16-May-1799 James Liddell, accountant, and Rebecca Liddell witnessed will.

Jul-1799 Rebecca pregnant.

18-Apr-1800 James Junior (Jimerson) Liddell born.

Spelling “Jimerson” is taken from the first entry in his own Bible, his 1836 MS wedding, believed by this author to be his own hand. Other entries and documents suggest Jimerson would accept any variation of the literal “son of James.”

All events after 1820 Jefferson MS unless specified.

10‑Mar‑1828 Jimerson age 28 bought 450 acres more or less from Elisha & Mary Ann Trader for $1200 gold ($2.66 per acre, cheap) “good and lawfull money of the United States.” (Perhaps $120,000 in 2002.)

[1830 Census Jimerson not found, boarding somewhere, probably Jefferson MS.]

28‑Mar‑1832 “Jimeson Liddell” bought 10 acres “one‑eighth of half quarter‑section of land” from William Stuart for $50 ($5 per acre, avg.)

[Jimerson totals: 2 purchases for 460 acres, cost $1250.]

31‑Dec‑1832 “Jamison Liddle” bought 287 acres from Cicero Jefferson for $450 ($1.56 per acre, very cheap.)

[Jimerson totals: 3 purchases for 747 acres, cost $1700.]

01‑Aug‑1833 “Jemerson Liddell” received patent #1232 for 77.06 acres Federal land, free after Jimerson occupied and improved the tract. If not improved, Jimerson would owe about $385.

[Jimerson totals: 4 purchases for 824.06 acres, cost $2085.]

26‑Sep‑1836 Jimerson (age 36) married Martha Ann (age 21.)

Dec‑1836 Martha Ann pregnant (age 21.)

[Spring 1837 Jimerson and Martha Ann newlyweds fight.]

May‑1837 Martha Ann moved out [to her mother’s house for “lying in.”]

27‑Sep‑1837 John Wesley Liddell born. Martha Ann stayed on at Mama’s house.

Probably JW named for founder of Methodism, Martha Ann’s religion.

30‑Nov‑1837 “Jameson Liddle” bought 250 acres including half‑acre graveyard from neighbor Arthur B. Sims, price unstated ($1250 at avg $5 per acre), Sims to vacate by 01‑Jan‑1839.

[Jimerson totals: 5 purchases for 1074.06 acres, cost $3335.]

04‑Dec‑1837 “Jamison Liddell” bought [765 acres and buildings] from neighbor Arthur B. Sims for $7500 ($9.80 per acre, high) mortgage $2500 due 01‑Jan‑1839, 01‑Jan‑1840, 01‑Jan‑1841.

[Jimerson totals: 6 purchases for 1839.06 acres, cost $10,835.]

07‑May‑1838 “James Liddell” sold “a Negro boy slave named Sampson aged about twenty years” to Ross O’Quinn for $1080 mortgage due 01‑Jan‑1839.

[Spring/Summer 1838 Jimerson and Martha Ann reconciled, perhaps because John Wesley near death.]

15‑Sep‑1838 “Jimison Liddell” finally recorded patent #1232 from 1833 (77.06 acres.)

Sep‑1838 Martha Ann pregnant (age 23.)

02‑Oct‑1838 John Wesley died, age 1 year + 5 days.

19‑Jan‑1839 Jimerson did not pay Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick orders atty Wilcox to sell security for $5078.75 debt. [Note 50c difference from 13‑Feb‑1838. Probably a typo.]

11‑Feb‑1839 Public auction scheduled at [Jimerson’s] house on the property. Outcome not known, but likely Jimerson lost his new house and land. Ned, Nancy, and Nancy’s unnamed child seem to have been sold, while Sarah and her child George were not.

From this point Jimerson seems to have sold only 3 slaves (all high value) Africa, John, and young man Nicholas.

03‑Jun‑1839 Cornelia Ann Liddell born.

Probably named for Jimerson’s sister and wife.

The evidence is consistent with the theories:

1. James did not study and annotate his Bible, nor did he take good care of it. That suggests Rebecca as the driving spirit in religious matters.

2. RJ died between 1794 and 1797, and grief casued Rebecca to abandon the official Anglican church for another worship style. Symbolic of her distress, Rebecca removed RJ’s inscription page from the Bible.

3. Rebecca died 1800 or 1801 soon after Jimerson’s birth. Probably Jimerson did not know his mother, instead raised by sister CV. He named both daughters after her.

4. James and EG died during or after the War of 1812-1814. Jimerson and maybe CV moved to the three-rivers port of Pittsburgh before 1820. CV died before 1828.

5. Possibly Jimerson married and started a family in Pittsburgh. Young people on the American frontier tended to marry early, 17-23 for men and 15-21 for women, for a variety of reasons and causes. Jimerson age 20 was right in the middle. If so, his PA family died 1820-1825 and he waited 10 or 15 years to remarry, not unusual in a culture that celebrated grief. However, a never-married single man-of-means age 36 was an oddity. The Biblical injunction to Multiply was not taken lightly in Protestant America.

6. Perhaps grief-stricken, Jimerson sold his property and hopped on the boat to Natchez. Lifetime farmers tend to migrate east and west; same latitude, same growing season, same crops if rain and soil permit. Jimerson moved the opposite way, about as far south as possible in the U.S. (Florida was not a state for another 20 years.) Jimerson arrived in Jefferson MS with at least $1200 in gold, enough hard cash to buy a small farm.

7. Jimerson came to MS as an orphan. Courthouse documents suggest Jimerson never left MS for any lengthy period after 1832. No family followed him to settle in MS. His sons later believed him born in Scotland, probably a transference from James. No mention of siblings or family in Jimerson’s own Bible. He named his sons after MS friends and classical figures, but he named both his daughters Cornelia, most likely after his older sister.

8. Jimerson overextended himself financially by 1838, essentially speculating on high cotton futures. The Panic of 1837 and resultant cotton crash set him back severely, and he may have lost his home to creditors.

9. After 1838 Jimerson settled down to the steady life of a planter. The typical planter farmed his own land, bought slaves (not land) whenever possible, and rented his excess slaves for seasonal labor. Long-term capital growth came primarily from natural increase, children born into perpetual slavery. When Jimerson died in 1856 slaves accounted for 78% of his estate. At a bare minimum, four-fifths of the family’s accumulated capital vanished with the Confederacy in 1865.

Liddell-Brown “Negro” slaves.

Jefferson County MS slave records relating to

Jimerson Liddell (1800-1856)

Thomas Calliham Brown (1800-1873)

After Jimerson died, his widow married Brown. As far as is known, when the Liddell slaves were emancipated in 1865 they were assigned the surname of the current head of household, Brown.

The Liddell-Brown slaves were everywhere described as dark-skinned “black” not light-skinned “mulatto,” implying a predominantly African bloodline. Note that slave ages as estimated by white people are notoriously unreliable.

07‑May‑1838 Jimerson sold “a Negro boy slave named Sampson aged about twenty years” to Ross O’Quinn for $1080.

11‑Feb‑1839 Jimerson couldn’t pay his bills, so the court auctioned his property. Apparently sold, Nancy age 18 and her infant. Probably not sold, Ned age 35. Certainly not sold, Sarah 16 and her child George 1.

01‑Jun‑1840 Decennial Federal Census

“Jemison Lyddle” 9 slaves; 5 men, 2 women, 2 children

slave bm 0‑10 [Sarah’s child George age 2]

slave bm 0‑10 [Nicholas 7]

slave bm 35‑55 [Ned 36]

slave bm 35‑55 [Africa 35]

slave bm 35‑55 [Bill 48]

slave bm 55‑100 [unknown old man]

slave bf 10‑25 [Sarah 20]

slave bf 35‑55 [Charlotte 48]

All 7 adult slaves worked in agriculture.

06‑Nov‑1842 Jimerson named his slaves in a “Due Trust” document.

Africa age 35

John 28
Sarah 23, her children George 7 and John 18 months

Joe 30 [Sarah’s spouse]

Bill 50

Charlotte 50

Nicholas 9

1850 Census. Liddell slaves counted with many others under overseer J. R. Comfort, probably to deliberately disguise ownership.

11‑Aug‑1856 Jimerson died intestate. His executor, Brown, accounted to the court for the slaves about 1858, about 1860, and in late July 1862.

1860 Census. Liddell slaves counted with Brown’s. Brown age 60 got the age of every (!) white person in his household wrong except his own, and erred on names and sexes of several. Not surprisingly, the unnamed slaves’ ages and sexes don’t match either.

The columns are:

Name - First name.

Family - Spouse and children, if known.

Description - Brown’s description ca. 1858.

Age 1862 - Brown’s guess as of 06-Jul-1862.

Value - Estimated sale price ca. 1858.

The 1870 Federal Census, the first to include all residents by name, lists a number “black” Browns in Jefferson County MS. These names seem to include several of the former Liddell slaves, and further research is indicated.
