Jan 1: Mr. Darden went to Fayette, paid his accounts; went to dinner to Mr. Stowers; went back met the girls in Fayette. Belle came that far in the carriage. They are all well in Bolivar; left Mr. Clark’s Sat. night at 11 oc. Miss Dupey came home with Lizzy Hicks. Thaddius Darden came home with them, He is just from school. Brother Buckner bought 1200 acres of land in Bolivar near Guilford Torrey. He expects to move. Martha & Olivia stayed 2 weeks with Virginia Torrey & Minerva Cameron, a week with their Aunt Matilda and five days with Mary Adelia Clark

Jan.2: Mr. Stuart has sold his place to Batchelor and bought Batchelor place near Rodney.

Jan 4: Heard from Fed Chambliss; he is gradually sinking.

Jan. 5: Bob Davenport bought Jane Miller’s place. Wat Burch rented Ned Miller’s place.

Jan 6: Mr. Darden, Martha, Olivia, Laura & Irene went to Ebenezer to hear Mr McDonald’s farewell sermon, Mr. Darden went to dinner at Buckner’s, The girls dined at Mr. Montgomery’s. Jeff Montgomery moved his hands Tuesday. Clara & Virginia came from Mary Bondurant’s Wednesday.

Jan 8: Fed Chambliss died Monday morning; was buried at home. They sent Blount a ticket. They did not go. Blount had gone to Rodney.

Jan 9: Sam Montgomery came, stayed to dinner. He brought a letter from his Grandma to Mr. Darden; She wants him to send for her the last the week or the first of next.

Jan. 10: Mr. Darden went to Fayette, loaned Sam Montgomery $1000 to buy a cook & her child 4 years old. Mr Montgomery bought 2 girls. The 4 negroes were $3000. Martha got a letter from Mary Bondurant; it was sent from Bolivar by Mr Robison, the Clerk of the Court. Got a letter from Minerva Collier inviting them to a party at Rodney.

Jan. 16: Wat Burch is moving to Ned Miller’s place. Jo Davenport is moving to Jim Miller place.

Jan. 18: Martha & Olivia got a ticket to Warren Dent’s party.

Jan 20: James Ashford & Prosper Montgomery came half after 11 oc., stayed till after supper. Samuel stayed last night with Jack on his way from Natchez.

Jan 22: Washington came, Ma got to Mr Montgomery’s at dark. She is not well. It was so cold for her to come home yesterday.

Jan 23: Spent the day at Mr Montgomery’s. Buckner was there with his little girls. Ma has very sore eyes. We have not heard from Buckner; he did not call to get Mary Scott.

Jan 26: Got a letter from Buckner; he was safe at home from New Orleans. He went up on the boat with little Mary Scott; met with his Aunt Mary Scott at the Bend on her return from Holly Springs. He speaks of a place not far that is for sale at $15.00 an acre. He wishes his Pa to go in and buy a place.

Jan. 27: Martha & Olivia went to church in Fayette; a new preacher, Mr. Beauman preached. Anne sent for Lena & Jimmy. They returned from Natchez yesterday eve.

Jan. 28: The girls started half after 7 oc. to their Aunt Anne’s to go with them to the party. Ma came at 10 oc., stayed till 3, went on to Jack’s, Mr. Darden paid $400 that he owed her for hire and $70.00 that Mr Robertson owed for Sarah’s hire.

Jan 30: Ben got back from the party at 1 oc., went a far as Mr Boll’s with the girls. Pros Montgomery drove Olivia that far. Blount went on to Rodney to go to Jackson to get his money from Mr. Clark for the debt Sam Sillers owes him. They have given Mr Smylie a call to preach in Fayette.

Feb. 1: Sent Dick to Mr. Torrey’s for Julia Stuart.

Feb 2: Ma started to Sister Maria’s at half after 2.

Feb 3: The girls went to church in Fayette; Mr Jones preached.

Feb. 5: Jim Ashford came with the teacher that was at his mother’s; she is going to teach at Mr. Montgomery’s, The school will commence now. Laura will go tomorrow if it does not rain.

Feb. 6: Mr Darden took Laura to school at Mr. Montgomery's. Miss Julia Enfield commenced teaching there this morning.

Feb. 3: Blount started to Lake Providence.

Feb 10: Amelia Green came from Mary Bondurant’s; she was too late for the school at Mr. Montgomery’s. Mr. Darden got a letter from Buckner; there is a piece near his Aunt Mary’s that can be bought for $10,000. He wants his Pa to go in with him & buy it, the payments are $2,000 first Oct., the balance in 4 years, to draw 8 per cent interest, There is a log house, mill & gin with quarters for 12 hands. Land cleared for the same hands.

Feb. 11: Mr Darden took Laura & Clara to school. Ma sent Mary Scott $100. & Buckner $20.

Feb 12: Anne Stuart, Martha & Olivia came half after 1 cc. Claudine Gibson did not come.

Feb. 14: Mr Darden got a boat Tuesday night; sent word for his horse to go after him Monday. We have a ticket to Dick Truly’s wedding. Euphemia Fox was married to Mr. Lane of New York.

Feb. 15: Martha and Olivia went to Cate’s, Lell Sillers came at 11 oc. I sent for the girls; they came as soon as they eat dinner. Blount got home yesterday. He came back by Mr. Montgomery’s for Laura. Robert Sillers came this evening.

Feb. 16: Robert & Belle went this morning. My babe is crying with toothache. His jaw is swollen very much.

Feb 17: Martha, Olivia, Laura & Irene went to the Methodist church in Fayette. Mr. French the Circuit Rider preached. Jack, Cate & Fanny Mayberry came by to dinner.

Feb. 19: Mr Darden got home half after 3. He left Mary Scott’s Sunday evening; came to the Bend, did not get on Southern Bell till 11 oc. Mon. Buckner & his Pa bargained for a place. They pay $2000 in Oct., pay $2000 1st Jan. 1858, pay $2000 Jan 1859; the balance in two payments.

Feb 20: Martha & Olivia went to Briscoe’s this evening.

Feb. 22: Dick went for Martha & Olivia; Claudy Gibson & Julia Stuart came home with them. Mr. Darden went for Laura, Virginia Montgomery came home with her. Martha got a letter from Sam Stark of Bolivar. Mrs. Stampley got back from Bolivar; Minerva went with her. Brad Truly brought a letter to Belle from Matilda.

Feb. 24: Anne & Blount, Claudy & Julia, Martha & Olivia started at 2 oc. to attend the choir, Miss Armstrong played the melodeon.

Feb 25: Laura & Virginia went to school. Rev. Mr. French the Circuit Rider in Fayette called to sell some books. Martha fixing white tarleton to wear to Dick Truly’s wedding.

Feb. 27: Mr. Darden started to New Orleans at 9 oc. I sent Irene & Jesse to stay with Cate till morning. We started to Dick Truly’s wedding half after 5 oc. It was a nice supper. The bride was dressed beautiful; so were the brides maids. Miss Mary Key was bride, Miss Alzenith Kinnison & Miss Charlotte Reed were maids, We stayed till 3 o'clock, went to Dr. Fox stayed till day; got home at 8 oc.

Feb 29: Mr Montgomery & Sister Maria got home from New Orleans this evening.

March 1: Coz. John Darden had a little negro lost on 8 Jan. He was ten years old; he went to carry water to some boys that were getting boards in the woods. They thought he got frightened. Did not find him until he had been lost 7 weeks. It is thought he froze to death.

March 3: Mr. Darden got home after sundown. He bought a carriage trimmed with lilac & orange morocco cushions; gave $575. Mr Darden went & came on the Steamer Natchez.

March. 5: Mr Darden went to Fayette, saw Mr. Montgomery, Sister Maria & Ma, saw Dick Truly & Bride. Belle wrote a note to Martha requesting her & Olivia to meet her & Martha West at Judge Whitney’s tomorrow.

March. 6: Mr Darden; went to Jack’s; Ma wants Washington to drive her to George Darden’s Saturday.

March 7: Washington took the Barouche to Mr. Montgomery’s for Ma.

March 8: Martha & Olivia went to spend the day with Sister Maria; Mre Pearcefield and daughter (Jane) were there. Ma went to George Darden’s.

March 9: Villines has bought out the tavern in Fayette. He tried keeping tavern before, but did not succeed.

March 10: Mr. Darden says they have bored 40 feet of the Artesian well in Fayette. Adams & Miller are the undertaker for $1500. No water, no pay.

March 16: We went to the Methodist church in Fayette; Mr French preached. We met Mr. Hicks & family going to Jim Dixon’s.

Mch. 17: Washington took Prince to Mr. Chambliss field. He was to go on to George Darden’s from there.

Mch.19: Took a letter out the office from Buckner. The trade was confirmed between him & Mr Head for the place. And Buckner has been offered $2000 for his bargain. He paid his part $953.

Mch. 20: Blount & Anne had gone to Port Gibson.

Mch. 21: Henry Mayberry & Mag Reed will be married in April.

Mch. 22: Sister Maria sent for Martha & Olivia to go there. Miss Lizzy & Catty Whitney were going to spend the day. Newton Young has come back a doctor.

Mch 23: We went to the Presbyterian church in Fayette but the preacher did not come. The Congregation went to hear Mr Baxter the Campbellite preacher.

Mch 24: Mr. Darden went to Fayette; took a ride in Brother Buckner’s carriage. He says it is a showy carriage. It cost him $525. Blount was in Fayette. Anne did not come; she will be home today. Liz Gibson came home with her. Anne sent word for Martha & Olivia to go there tomorrow. Martha West, Miss Lizzy & Catty Whitney, Sam Montgomery & Dr. Newton Young spent the day here.

March 28: Newton Young called awhile; he had been to Cicero Stampley’s to get board; did not succeed. Ma went to Mary Bondurant's to take a boat to meet Virginia Green at Mary Scott’s.

Mch 29: Mr Darden went to church in Fayette, quarterly meeting. Martha & Olivia got home at 1 oc. They came from Mrs Briscoe’s. The Miss Gibsons, Martha West & Lizzy Hicks were at the party.

Mch 30: We went to church in Fayette; Mr Montgomery preached at Methodist church. He is a book agent; took up a collection; large congregation.

Mch 31: Mr. Darden took Laura to school in the buggy. Went to Ebenezer to church; Mr McCaully preached. Dr Butler of Port Gibson was with him. They came to Mr. Montgomery’s for dinner. Newton Young went to board at Jim Dixon’s; $20 a month for himself and horse. He is going to practice medicine.

April 2: Anne & Julia came at 4 oc. We started to Natchez half past 7 oc. We had a sprinkle at William Lane’s, a hard rain from Mrs Yardis to Newcomb. We took a snack at Saint Catherine bridge. We met Martha West, Mr & Mrs Harper in the edge of Natchez. Mrs Torrey was in town; Cate McCaleb was with her. She stayed at Mrs. Garrets. We went to see the great magician McAlister; he performs sleight of hand. Samuel Darden & Milton Kinnison went there with us.

April 4: Mr. Darden took Jesse to Cate. She kept him last night. They went to see Henry Mayberry married. The wedding was at Coz. John Darden’s. Charlotte went with her. Cunningham & Wes Whitney, Mr Bullen, Cate, Fanny, Jack & Buddy were all that were there. Jack called as he came back; eat supper. We met Cate & Fanny at the Shop, Mr. French performed the ceremony.

April 4: Mr McCallum came on his way to meeting at Greenwood near Selsertown to organize a church.

April 5: Mr Darden went with Mr. McCallum. Mr Darden got back late in the evening; they elected Mr. Archer Elder of Greenwood church, Mr. Archer and wife, Mrs. Turpin & Mrs W. Hall are the only members,

April 6: We went to church to Greenwood; Mr Purviance preached the ordination sermon. Rev. Mr. Finny was ordained. There was five preachers; they then ordained him by his kneeling & laying their hands on his head. Mr. McCallum came with us, stayed all night.

April 7: They have put a bridge over Coz. John Darden’s creek.

April 10: Mrs Chamberlain & Anna Darden went by on their way to Natchez; they stayed all night.

Apr. 11: Mr Darden got a letter from a Presbyterian preacher living in Minnesota, wishing to get the churches at Fayette & Ebenezer.

Apr. 12: Mr Darden went to church at Ebenezer; Mr McCallam preached. Mr Butler, McCinny & Baldwin were there. Charles New was married to John Clark’s widow on 3 April.

Apr. 13: We went to church to Ebenezer. Had a sermon by Mr McCallam. Mr. Darden, myself & the children went by with Sister Maria. Rev. Mr. Butler, McKinney & Baldwin, Dr Duncan, & George Torrey went to dinner there. Mr McKinney preached in Fayette tonight. Billy Stampley died last night 10 oclock.

April 14: Jack cal1ed went to Fayette with Mr Darden to give in his report as overseer of road. Rev. Mr. Butler & Rev. Mr McKinney came from Fayette with Mr. Darden, stayed till 4 oc., went to Mr Archer’s. Newton came to have the tampers burnt out his horses mouth. Mr Archer wrote a note to Mr Darden requesting an appointment to be given out for the Rev. Mr. Wayne in Fayette next Sabbath.

April 15: Anna Darden & Mrs Chamberlain stayed at Jack’s Saturday night. Coz. Myra bought a new Barouche, gave $190 & her old Barouche. Sarah & Buckner Darden came at sundown on their way to Natchez to see Rosalie.

April 16: Buckner & Sarah left before 7 oc. Mr. Darden went to Fayette to have an appointment published for Rev. Mr. Wayne to preach in the Presbyterian Church.

April. 17: Buckner & Sarah went back; had Rosa & Jane Buckles with them. The girls are packed to go to Anne Briscoe’s.

April 18: Mr Darden, Martha & Olivia started at 6 oc. to the swamp.

April 19: Mr Darden got back from Anne Briscoe’ s at quarter of 4 oc. this evening. They heard when they got to St. Joseph that Anne was at Mary Bondurant’s. They went to Mary’s to dinner. Mrs Bondurant, Mr & Mrs Anderson, Miss McNair’s & Miss Zeus Wade were there. Little Johnny was very sick with fever, threatened with spasms. Dr Barnes was tending on him. They stayed at Mary’s till 4 oc., went to Anne Briscoe’s. Anne is not well; she got a letter from Mary Scott, saying she would come down with Ma to Anne’s. Virginia Green did not come; she could not leave home, they were repairing the house. Anne has quit nursing her babe. Cate went by going to her Sister’s to attend the dedication at Belle Grove.

April 20: We went to the Presbyterian Church in Fayette. Rev. Mr Wayne preached an excellent sermon. There was a small congregation. He preached at night also. Cate & Jack went by going home; they had been to Belle Grove. There was a great many there.

April 22: Mr Darden heard John B. Montgomery was not expected to live with neuralgy of the heart.

Apr. 23: John B. Montgomery died at 7 oc. He would be buried tomorrow at ten oclock.

April 24: We went to the burying; Rev. Mr French made a very appropriate exhortation, He was buried at the Hugh Montgomery grave yard. He lived to see all his children grown.

April 27: Mr Darden & I went to church in Fayette; Rev, Dr McCallam preached; Rev. Dr Butler was there also.

Apr. 28: Mr Darden & I went to church in Fayette; small congregation. Dr Duncan, Mr Duncan, Miss Lizzy Armstrong & Mrs. Anne T. Harper joined the church. The rain washed the bridge over the creek at Coz John Darden’s away.

Apr. 29: Mr Darden went to Fayette; saw Blount’s John with Buckner’s strawberries selling at 2 bits a pint. There was a real tornado on Saturday night in Maryland settlement. Bill Holmes’ house-roof was blown off; Bill Cox’s house blown down; he was badly hurt. Frank Whitney was very much injured. Jack Darden & Newton came up to eat strawberries; stayed till supper.

May 1: Mr. Darden rode over to Mr Davenport’s to see if he was overseer of the road between here & his house.

May 2: Sister Maria & Mr Montgomery started to the swamp this morning,

May 4: We went to the Methodist church in Fayette; Rev. Mr Stewart preached. He is a brother to William Stewart. Newton called this evening; he went by to dinner at Judge Whitney’s.

May. 5: Ma & Mary Jane Scott was to come to Anne Briscoe’s 28 April.

May 6: There was a large collection at the commencement on Thursday; Jeff Whitney spoke.

May 7, Tully & Lena came in the buggy; Virginia drove. Anne & Blount came as far as Fayette on their way to the swamp.

May 9: Got a letter from Martha; she does not want us to send for them till the 19. Sister Maria got home from the swamp to dinner. Miss Mary Penfield & Miss Ashford’s came up to Mr Montgomery’s today on a visit to her sister, Miss Julia Penfield.

May 10: Jack came up, stayed awhile. Mr. Darden went there to dinner, Newton & Pros Montgomery called this evening. We expected the Rev. Mr. Markham here this evening; he did not come.

May 11: We went to church to the Presbyterian church in Fayette. Rev. Mr Markham preached an excellent sermon. His father lived in Fayette when he a child.

May 15: Mr Darden went to spend the day with his brother Samuel. I went to Anne Stuart’s at 3 oc; she had gone to spend the day at Mrs. Harper’s. Miss Buckner from Natchez was there, Miss Robson, Mrs. Hunt’s teacher, Mrs Bradford, Mrs. Torrey & Miss Armstrong & Mrs Briscoe.

May 17: There is a fish fry to be given at Brad Truly’s place. Blount met Adaline Dangerfield going; Old Sal Stampley was following the carriage. Saw Coz John Darden, told him he & Coz Margaret would come to see us next week. Cicero Stampley called this evening.

May l8: Mr. Darden went to Greenwood church. They organized a Sabbath school; there was 27 scholars.

May 19: Mr Darden got home a 5 oc., he saw Belle Sillers & Anne Stuart in Fayette. Anne went on to Mrs Briscoe’s to see Claudine Gibson. She came back from Port Gibson yesterday. Martha & Olivia got home at dusk. Mr. & Mary Jane Darden came with them as far as Mr. Reed’s. The springs of a new carriage broke so that they could not get any farther. Jeff Briscoe & John Bondurant came as far as Rodney with the girls.

May 21: Coz John & Charlotte Reed spent the day here. Coz Margaret was ready but they had a negro woman taken sick; she could not leave, Charlotte had engaged to teach at Mr. Calhoun’s. She will have his children, two of George Darden’s, and Mary Richardson’s little boy.

May 22: Coz. John Darden went by going after Josephine. She is at school at New Tonia, Wilkinson County.

May 23: Received a letter from Matilda Sillers; they were well. Had storm very bad, blew a great many trees down on Joseph’s place. Blow Sam Lee’s gallery down; tree fell on the house & broke a large hole in the roof.

May 24: We went to the picnic at Bolls Creek; had a pleasant party; more than I expected; danced, left at half after 4 oclock.

May 25: We went to church in the Presbyterian church in Fayette; had an excellent sermon by Mr. Finny from Greenwood Church, Mr. Finny came home with us; stayed all night.

May 26: Coz John Darden passed with Jo; she was better than he expected to find her. It is reported that Charlotte Reed & Mr Baker, a young man from the north will be married this morning. Mr Baker has been teaching school at John Collier’s for a year; he is very smart, I hope she will do well.

May 29: The girls got home at 1 oc. There was a party of young ladies & gentlemen. The Miss Giraults, Miss Gibson’s, Miss Weldon & the girls. Mr Dixon, Shackelford, Duncan & Dent spent the evening with the young ladies at Mr. Bradford’s. They sent for Sister Maria to see Mary Bondurant’s baby. It had flux; thought it was dying. Mr. Darden got a letter from Buckner; he had just got warning to send 5 his men to work on the levee. He was afraid of an overflow, His crop was very good.

May 30: Anne Stuart & family, Mrs Adaline Gibson & daughter, Dr Young, Cicero Stampley, Mr. Duncan & Shackelford spent the day. Anne & Blount stayed all night.

June 1: Mr Darden, Martha & Olivia went to church at Ebenezer; Mr. Wayne preached; came home with Mr. Darden to dinner. The girls went by to dinner with Sister Maria, She came back yesterday. Mary’s babe was not dead, but they had no hope. He has flux, been sick 11 days; he noticed only once while she was there. She left Mrs. Anderson & Mrs. Glover with Mary. Miss Maxwell was there.

June 4: Olivia, Irene & I went to the picnic at Mr. Clark’s old place. Warren Dent & Miss Mary Weldon were married at Howell Hinds yesterday. Martha & Olivia got tickets to a party to be given by the college boys at Oxford.

June 5: The girls spent the day at Mrs. Briscoe’s with Anne & Blount, Miss Giraults, Minerva Collier, Miss Bemas, Mrs. Gibson & her daughter, Mr. Dixon, Shackelford, Broughton, Sam Montgomery and Charley Duncan.

June 6: Naomi Chambliss spent the day here. Cicero Stampley came after dinner, stayed till 5 oclock.

June 7: Mr. Darden went to Fayette to consult with the committee about employing Mr Wayne to preach at Ebenezer & Fayette churches.

June 8: Dr Young & Sam Montgomery took supper with us.

Juno 9: Jack came up to see Martha about going to Sister Betsy’s.

June 10: We spent the day at Coz. John Darden’s; Dr Young was there. Minerva Truly (Sarah Minerva Truly-2nd wife of Daniel Bradford Truly) is very sick; she has fits, Mrs Stampley went by going to see her.

June 11: Martha & Olivia went to spend the day with Vic. Jenkins. Cicero Stampley called and went with them. Martha & Olivia spent a pleasant day at Vic’s. Naomi Chambliss & Dr. Young were there. The girls called at Dr Young’s office to see how it looked, Jack went with them.

June 14: Jack came this far with Ma. She is going to sister Maria’s. Sam Montgomery came this evening; took supper, went on stayed all night with Dr. Young.

June 15: Mr. Darden, Martha, Olivia, & Laura went to church at Greenwood. Mr. Fey preached.

June 16: Rev. Mr. Baldwin dined with us. Mr. Darden went to Fayette. They sold the parsonage to Mr. Dixon for $2000. They talk of getting Mr Fey to preach.

June 18: Jack, Cate, Ma & Martha started to Sister Betsy’s in Wilkinson County; got in Jack’s field at the creek; the horses run back turned the carriage over, broke it badly.

June 20: Cicero Stampley & Wat Burch stayed short time.

June 21: Our Son Buckner came at 11 oc. Met with Miss Cate & Laura Scott on the boat. Mr. Darden & Buckner went to see Newton this evening. They met John Collier; he said he saw Ma, Jack, Cate & Martha. Martha Darden came to Mr Montgomery’s yesterday evening. She is coming here Monday.

June 22: We went to church in Fayette; Mr Fey preached at the Presbyterian Church. Buckner & Dr. Young went to church at Ebenezer; took dinner at Sister Maria’s.

June 23: Sam & Pros Montgomery spent the day. Martha Darden came at 12 oclock from Buckner’s.

June 25: Martha Darden went from here to Mrs. Magee’s. Dr Young & Buckner had their ambrotype taken in the same case. Anne, Blount, Jimmy & Lena came this evening.

June 25: Martha Darden called; she went to Samuel Darden’s. Claudy Gibson came at 11 oclock.

June 26: Claudy went home after dinner, Olivia took her to Mrs Briscoe’s. Buckner went to call on Miss Kinnison; none home, He went to Cicero Stampley’s. Buckner went to Anne Stuart’s, going to John Chambliss’ this evening to attend a picnic tomorrow. Mr Darden went to Fayette, saw George Torrey. They have got Mr. Fey to preach till Fall. Have written to Mr. Taylor to take charge of the church after he leaves.

June 28: Mr Dardaen went to Jack’s. While he was there Jack, Cate & Martha came from Sister Betsy’s. They came from Mrs Ashford's. They had a continuation of accidents. Did not see Mary or Martha, it was so far from Sister Betsy’s to Martha Skinner‘s that they did not send for them. Frank Hornsby & wife are both in bad health.

June 29: We went to church in Fayette; Rev. Mr. Roan & Rev. Mr. French preached.

June 30: Buckner came at 11 oc. He stayed at Blount’s last night; stayed at Coz John Chambliss’ Friday night, went to the picnic Saturday, stayed all night at Mr. Calhoun’s; came back to Coz John Chambliss’ to dinner; from there to Blount’s.

July 1: Buckner went to call on Miss Kinnison. Martha West & Minor Dixon were married Sunday morning by Mr. French. They will take a trip to Madison County to visit Minor’s relations.

July 3: Dr Young, Buckner & Jim Ashford went to Fayette. Buckner & Jim went to Mr Montgomery’s to dinner.

July 4: We all went to the celebration; had some remarks before reading the Declaration of Independence by Dr. Young. An excellent speech by Washington Shackelford, Mr. Fey prayed. There was a large collection. Danced two or three setts; had nice dinner, The celebration at Boils Creek.

July 5: We got home at 11 oc. I brought Joe Darden home this morning. Jack & Frank Montgomery called at the gate.

July 6: There is church at Ebenezer. Mr. Darden, Buckner, Martha, Olivia & Laura went to church. Mr. Fey preached. Buckner went to dinner at his Uncle Buckner’s; he came home with him, Mr. Darden & the girls went to dinner at Sister Maria’s. Hiram Chambliss & Jim Ashford came home with Buckner; stayed all night.

July 7: Mr. Darden, Buckner and Brother Buckner went to Natchez. Buckner going to take a boat & brother Buckner went for Rosa. She is at Dr Spear’s school.

July 8: Mr Darden & Brother Buckner got back at half past 11, Buckner would not get a boat till tonight. Buckner sent his ambrotype to Martha. Mr Darden had his ambrotype taken for Laura, He gave the Daguertype he had taken for her to Buckner. Louis & Willy Chamberlain & Mr Calhoun called, stayed an hour, Buckner was 23 years old yesterday.

July 11: Mr Maxwell, Sam Montgomery, Cicero Stampley, Jack, Miss Julia Penfield, Frank Montgomery, Clara, Ginney & Laura came this evening. Sam want home after supper.

July 12: Mi Julia, Frank, Clara, Ginney & Laura started at 3 oc. this morning to Mrs Ashford’s, Miss Julia is going home not to return. Martha had her ambrotype taken. Jeff Whitney took supper here, Jack & Dr. Young came after supper. Jeff went home with Dr. stayed all night.

July 13: We went to church; not a large congregation Martha & Olivia went home with their Aunt Anne.

July 15: Mr Montgomery & Sister Maria came & spent the day. Clara, Ginney & Laura came half after 3 oc. from Mrs Ashford’s. Miss Mary & Miss Julia Penfield went to Natchez this morning to go home. Jim Ashford & Frank Montgomery called; stayed to supper.

July 16 Martha & Olivia went to spend the day with Bernice Rowland. Dr. Rowland went back to Bolivar. Mabella Stampley has another daughter.

July 17: Cate & Penny went by going to Henry Mayberry’s. Jack went to George Darden’s this morning. Dr. Young was here this morning. That is five visits.

July 19: Cate & Fanny spent the day. Julia & Tully Stuart came. Cicero & Vol Stampley took supper.

July 23: Mr Darden, Martha & Olivia went to the examination at the Academy in Fayette. Rev. Mr. Watkins made a speech, the speech was very good, but he said some things about the Committee that had the power of buying the Academy from Mr Curtis. John Whitney took offense. Mr Whitney wanted to speak and explain himself, but Mr. Forsythe would not consent. It made Mr Whitney very angry. He said that any person that said he acted unfairly as one of the committee, was an infamous liar; and could have satisfaction then or any other time, in any way they pleased. Mr. Darden & the girls went out to Mrs. Briscoe’s to dinner.

July 24: Mr Darden got a letter from Buckner. He was to start north on Tuesday with Claiborne Briscoe. He has been very sick; his physician advised him to travel. He pays Buckner’s expenses. Jeff Montgomery has been over. His boy ran away; he overtook him at St. Joseph, brought him to his Pa’s. His Pa bought him, gave $1200 for him.

July 26: Jack told the girls yesterday evening that Sallie Chambliss & Eugenia Calhoun would come here tonight.

July 27: We went to Presbyterian church in Fayette.

July 29: Martha, Olivia & I went to see Bell & Robert, We met Bell going to see Lizzy Hicks. We saw Put Darden in Fayette, Mrs Lee came down from Bolivar with him.

July 30: Blount & Anne Stuart came at sundown. Julia went to George Hunt’s to a party given to girls & boys 14 years old.

July 31: Frank Montgomery came back from Mrs Ashford’s; did not stop.

Aug. 1: There is a piece in the Watch Tower from John Whitney explaining the matter that he wished to explain the day that Mr Watkins spoke at the Academy.

Aug 2: Jesse was very sick all night with cholera morbus and fever.

Aug. 3: Mr Darden, Martha & Olivia went to church at Ebenezer. Mr Darden & the girls went to dinner with Sister Maria. Mr Montgomery, Pros & Sam have gone to Brown Wells. Mary Bondurant has another son born 25 July. Vol Stampley is quite sick; sent for Dr. Young.

Aug 4: Dr Young & Cicero Stampley called, going to Fayette. Dr Young took the subscription money for the girls to Mr. Fey for the hymn books for the Presbyterian church.

Aug 5: Samuel C. Montgomery & family spent the day here; Bob Weatherly & Frank Montgomery.

Aug 6* Martha got a letter from Mary Jane Scott, she said that she missed Buckner very much. Got a letter for Ma from. Anne Briscoe, She was well.

Aug 7: Vol Stampley is quite sick. His father & Sister came this evening.

Aug 8, Mr Darden went to see Vol the morning. They sent for Dr. Walker, Dr. Young went up this morning found Dr Walker there & quit.

Aug 9: Sam Montgomery came, spent the day. He had a pleasant time at Brown Wells. He is anxious for Martha & Olivia to go with him again. Sallie Chambliss & Eugenia Calhoun are going again. Vol Stampley is worse, Sent for Dr Fox. Cicero came, stayed awhile, he says the Dr.’s think it typhoid fever. John Whitney, Dick Truly & Horatio Reed have gone to Kansas.

Aug 14: Martha & Olivia went to Coz. John Darden’s to call on Mrs. Baxter. She had gone to Mr. Stowers.

Aug 17: Martha, Olivia & Laura went to church in Fayette. Mr. Darden went to Ebenezer to church. Took dinner at Mr. Montgomery’s. Mary Bondurant came to her Fayette yesterday, She is very smart, her baby is just three weeks old; ride 30 miles when her babe is so young. John Bondurant said Warren Briscoe joined the Methodist church. They got a letter from Buckner since him & Claib got to the Falls Niagara; he said Claib was not any better. Warren says he will go if he is not better the next letter.

Aug 18: Martha & Olivia spent the day at Mr Hicks. Mrs Hicks was, in Fayette when they got there, She saw Mrs Evans die; she was so unwilling to die. Prayed to get well, but did not pray to be prepared to die. Mr Fey was called in to pray for her just before she died.

Aug 19: Miss Mary Ross died at Rev. J. C. Jones this morning. Been sick 3 weeks with typhoid fever. She was a niece of Mrs Jones, also niece of Sarah Darden. She leaves a brother, the only near relative.

Aug 22: Laura came at 9 oc., Tully came with her. Blount will take Julia to Rally Springs the first next week. Put & Joe Darden & Dr. Young spent the day.

Aug 23: Martha, Olivia & Laura went to Cate’s this evening. Ma got back from Sister Betsy’s.

Aug 24: We went to the Presbyterian church in Fayette; not many there. There was no meeting at the Campbellite church.

Aug 26: Mr Manifold came with an order from Buckner M. Darden for $50.00. Mr Darden gave him a draft for the money.

Aug 27: Ma, Martha, Olivia & myself & children spent the day with Sister Maria. Olivia & I went to Anne Stuart’s in the evening. Blount & Julia went to Rodney to take a boat for Holly Springs. Mary Whitney, Amanda Hammet, Lavinia West & Emma Hunter went to school under Blount’s care.

Aug 28: Anne is 1ooking for Mary Jane Darden; she came at dark. Martha came from Mr Montgomery’s. She brought Johnny Bondurant with her. Laura stayed at her Uncle Buckner’s last night. She came to Sister Maria’s & came here with Martha, Jim Ashford & his sister. Mary & Betty came to Mr Montgomery’s today.

Aug 29: I came from Anne’s this evening, left Martha, Olivia, Mary Jane & Rosa there. Met Mary & John Bondurant going to Anne’s after Johnny.

Aug. 30: The Miss Ashfords, Clara & Ellen Montgomery spent the day with us. Dr. Young came up this eve. Laura got a letter from Buckner; he was in New York City. Claib was improving.

Aug. 31: Mr Darden went to Ebenezer to church. Went by to dinner with Samuel Darden, They will move in their new house soon.

Sept 3: Martha is getting ready to go to Brown Wells with Mary Bondurant.

Sept 5: Martha started to Mr Montgomery’s at 10 oc. to go with Mary & John Bondurant to John Chambliss’ this evening, from there to Brown Wells in the morning.

Sept 6: Olivia & Laura went to Cate’s. Put Darden & Hiram Chambliss came at 10 oc., went on to Jack’s. Cate had a good many to dinner. Clara & Harrison Montgomery went back home this evening. Mary & John Bondurant & Martha started from Mr. Montgomery’s at 7 oc. Sallie & Eugenia did not go to the Wells and Mary Bondurant did not go to Mr. Chambliss. John Whitney & Dick Truly have got home from their trip to Kansas.

Sept. 10: A letter from Mary Jane Scott to Martha, Buckner had got home that morning. Mary had taken Amelia to the “Bend” to send her to school to Holly Springs. Rev. Mr Forsythe’s two little daughters were buried today at the Methodist church in Fayette; congestive fever. Great affliction to lose two lovely little girls so near each other. The oldest was 12 years, the other 7. Miss Josephine Kinnison is to be married tonight to Mr. Buie of Franklin County.

Sept. 11: Martha came from Mr. (Prosper King) Montgomery’s this morning. “Tip” (Harrison Prentiss Montgomery) came with her in Mary Bondurant’s carriage. They only stayed two day & three nights at the Wells. Isaac Harrison & family were there. D. Harrison & children, Miss Lizzy Armstrong, Mr. Leonly Briscoe & children, Jack Watson & lady. There was a pleasant company there. Madison Darden passed coming from Natchez.

Sept. 13: We all went to church in Fayette. There is to be Communion meeting. Rev. Mr. Price of Rodney preached an excellent sermon. Rev. Mr Forsythe moved to Port Gibson yesterday.

Sept. 14: We all went to church. Rev. Mr. Dormus preached.

Sept. 15: Mary Jane & Madison Darden came half after 10 oc.. Madison went to Coz. Myra Chamberlain’s this evening. Mary Jane, Martha & Olivia went to Cate’s.

Sept 16: Mr. Darden went to see Cicero; he has had fever for 3 or 4 days. Sent for Dr. Walker; had no fever this evening.

Sept. 17: Martha, Olivia, Laura & Mary Jane Darden went to Anne Stuart’s to spend the day there with Mrs. Bradford and Mrs. Harper. Ma came at 2 oc. in Mary Bondurant’s carriage.

Sept. 18: Mr. Darden went to the barbecue. Martha, Olivia, Laura & Mary Jane got home half after 10 oc.; they started to the barbecue at 12; not many there. John Whitney & Mr Wilcox spoke. Went to Jim Dixon’s, danced a few setts. Put Darden & Jeff Whitney came; stayed till after supper. The girls got a letter for their grandma from Anne Briscoe; she is complaining of palpitation of the heart. She says she is looking for Claib Briscoe & Buckner down. Buckner will come on the Jefferson & spend some time. Anne wants ma to go over 1st Oct. and stay with her.

Sept. 19: Martha wrote to Anne Briscoe in answer to her grandma’s letter. She is to send for ma to the Landing at Rodney the last day of September.

Sept 20: Cate went to see her sister, Mrs Stewart this morning. Dr. Young & Robert McGinty stayed to the ball at Wild Wood Springs.

Sept. 22: They have given up the Keys of the Academy in Fayette to Dr Duncan. Mr. Forsythe sold his furniture at auction today.

Sept. 23: Anne Stuart sent for me this morning before day. Lena is very sick with fever; is insensible. Martha, Olivia & I went; she is no better; suffering a great deal. Robert came for Dr Fox, thought Bell would die flooding. Her baby was born before day. Was doing well when the Dr. left. I stayed till 1 in the evening. Anne sent for me, Lena is worse. They sent for Caroline Sillers.

Sept. 24: Lena is better; knows everyone this morn. Mr. Darden came to Blount’s with Irene & Laura. Coz Sarah & Mr Stowers came to see Lena. Coz George Torrey & his little daughter Ella came, spent the day. Lena took a change for worse at 10 oc; remained stupid all day & night, Leonly Briscoe is here. We take turns sitting up.

Sept. 25: Lena is conscious this morning, but took fever again at 11 oc.

Sept. 26: Lena insensible, crying with her blister like she would take spasms. Miss Graves has come to take the school at Mr Montgomery’s.

Sept. 27: Lena is very sick, but got better as soon as the medicine operated. Buckner came this eve from his Aunt Anne Briscoe’s.

Sept. 28: Coz Sarah & Mr Stowers came this morning. Buckner went to church. Mary Jane Darden came from church to Blount’s; stayed all night.

Sept. 29: Laura went to schoo1 to Mr. Montgomery’s. Sent Dick with Ma’s horses for her to go to Anne Briscoe’s. Lena is improving.

Oct.1 : Mr. Darden got back (from Natchez); at 2 oc., sold 24 bales at 11 3/4 cts; got returns from Pinckard from New Orleans for 12 bales at l2 cts. That is 60 bales sold. Buckner went to see Put Darden; went to Fayette. Frank Montgomery started to Nashville to school. Martha & Olivia spent the day at Cate’s; Jeff Whitney & Rob. McGinty went there. Cicero Stampley was here this evening. He has bought the land to the right of the road from Jo. Davenport; gave him 10.00 an acre for it.

Oct. 3: Bell was better; her sisters Mrs Baldwin & Yoe expected to leave her today. Lucy Harper, Uncle Billy Harper’s daughter, married a Methodist preacher lately.

Oct 4: Buckner went to Sam Montgomery’s today. Cate & Jack took dinner, went on to brother Buckner’s, Martha & Olivia went with them. Dr. Young came to play checkers with Mr. Darden.

Oct. 5: Mr Darden went to church to Ebenezer; small congregation. Mr. Darden, Martha, Olivia, Cate, Jack, Mary Jane, Rosa & Mr Fey went to dinner with Anna Darden. Buckner & Dr Young went by to dinner with Sam Montgomery.

Oct. 6: Dr Young went to Fayette with Mr Darden, Mr Montgomery & George Torrey met there to pay Rev. Mr Fey for preaching. Fayette church payed ________. Ebenezer church paid $125. We will be without a preacher now. Guilford Torrey has been down to George Darden’s; his little boy Jack had his arm broken by falling out a window. Rev. Mr. Roan preached his farewell sermon at the Brick church yesterday. Mr Rob. Campbell sold his swamp place to Mrs Eliza Jane Miller. Isaac Burch sold his place in Red Lick, but backed out from the trade. The young gentlemen from Fayette are all going to Miss Coleman’s wedding tomorrow night. She marries William Stowers.

Oct 7: Andy & Ben took 12 bales to Natchez that makes 72 bales carried off. Sister Maria went to Cate’s to dinner. Mary Bondurant stayed to dinner here. Sister Maria called; Cate came with her, Jack & Henry came, Dr. Selman & Dr. Young came this evening.

Oct. 8: Rev. Mr Fey spent the day here. Buckner came from Jack’s this evening. Ben & Andy came from Natchez sold 14 lbs butter at 25 cts a pound. Cate, Jack, Henry, Dr. Young and Pros Montgomery came this evening, stayed till after supper.

Oct. 10: Buckner, Martha & Olivia started at daylight to Natchez to take a boat to Millikens Bend. The girls are going to visit their Aunt, Mary Jane Scott, Mr Fleming wrote to Mr Darden that there was four boats aground in sight of Natchez; the river is very low.

Oct 11; Mr Darden went to Fayette, Mr Torrey told him that Miss Lizzy Armstrong & Minerva Collier were coming to visit the girls. Oscar McGinty was here. Dr Young called coming from Fayette.

Oct 12: We went to church in Fayette to hear Mr. Fey’s farewell sermon. There was a good many there. Anne Stuart was there, had Lena with her. She is well again; looks very weak.

Oct. 15; Mr Darden went to Henry Middleton’s to set apart the widow dower in the land; there was Phil Dougherty, White Bullen, Jack Darden & Mr. Darden for this county. For Adams County, Gerard Brandon, two Mr Rowan’s, the land being in both counties.

Oct. 17: Loaded the wagons to go to Natchez; that is 90 bales sent off. Got a letter from Buckner; they got in Saturday evening the 11th Oct. safe; had a pleasant trip. The servants had 83 bales picked, sold 17 bales, 14 at 12 cts & 3 at 11 3/4 cts; packed 72; thinks they will make 180 bales. Cicero Stampley went as far as Rodney on the Eclipse in company with Buckner & the girls. The bridal company got on at Grand Gulf, William Stowers & bride, She is a delicate looking lady.

Oct. 18: Dr. Young & Dr. Selman started to Harrisonburg, Louisiana Monday; expected to go to Jeff Montgomery’s and to Milliken’s Bend before they came back.

Oct. 20: Mary Bondurant came this evening with her children. John Bondurant got a dispatch that Frank Clover was dying.

Oct. 21: Mr Montgomery & Pros went by going to Natchez this morning.

Oct. 22: Andy & Ben went to Natchez took 12 bales that is 102 bales sent off. Mr. Darden says John Fleming’s baby was buried this evening; some disease of the throat. Mr William Stewart’s little boy Willie; did not think it would live, They sent for Cate at 3 oclock.

Oct. 23: Mr Stewart's child died. Sent us a ticket, I went to the burying; it was buried in Fayette. John Fleming’s little girl died Tuesday. Octavia Bullen that was, Mrs Kennedy, died Monday at her father’s.

Oct. 24: Mr Darden went to Fayette, trying a case: Burch & Ogle against Rev. Mr. Curtis. Sent us a ticket to Thaddius Montgomery’s burying. Charles Clark is in Fayette. He says the crops are good In Bolivar.

Oct. 25: Mrs George Torrey has a daughter. It was born 1 Oct., named Lucy Owen. Tom Reed lost a valuable negro woman last night; Mrs Reed’s nurse. Had fever.

Oct. 27: Mr. Darden took Laura & Clara to school at 8 oc. The Rev. Mr Graves, Miss Graves’ father, came back with him; stayed till after dinner.

Oct. 30: Anne, Blount, Mr Darden & I went to Natchez at daylight. Sent the children to stay with Cate, We got to Natchez at 11 oclock. We met Dr Young & Selman, Dr. Young got a situation back In the swamp. We saw Mary Bondurant and Mrs Anderson in Natchez. Mary had bought a 20.00 dress to wear to Pro’s wedding.

Oct. 31: Mr Darden got 11 ¼ cents for 12 bales. That is 114 bales sold. Mr Darden bought a negro man & woman; gave $1350 for Davy, and $1150 for Michy. The girl is for Buckner, if he likes her. Got a letter from Martha, and she wants us to send to Rodney the 11th Nov. for them. They were enjoying their visit very much, Buckner had bought Mr Head’s cattle at $6 apiece. Got a letter from Anne Briscoe, all well, Ma does not want a carriage bought yet.

Nov. 2: Mr Darden went to church Ebenezer. There was not many there. Cate & Jack went to Spring Hill; there was no preacher.

Nov. 3: Mary Jane Darden called at the gate going to Cate’s to stay all night. She is going to Natchez; Madison is with her.

Nov. 4: Lizzy Hicks is very sick with inflammation of stomach. Mr Faulk the Druggist was thought to be dying. He was taken with a fit last night.

Nov. 5: Mr Faulk died yesterday. Mr Graves of Zion Seminary called; Mr Darden gave him $25.00 for the Seminary. Mary Jane Darden & Madison came after supper. They had been to Natchez.

Nov. 6: The wagons went to Natchez took 12 bales. That makes 126 that we have sent off. I sent 17 pounds butter. I went to see Lizzy Hicks. She is better. Her babe was born dead on Tuesday; it was a boy. Coz Sarah Stowers told me she did not think she would live last night. I went on from there to Anne Stuart’s. Leonly Briscoe has returned from the swamp. She did not get her place; the man had declined selling. She was at Jeff Briscoe’s. Anne had a boy baby, it was born dead. It was a fine looking child. Dr. Andrews & Barnes were both with her.

Nov. 7: Blount went to Fayette, the election is in favor Buchanan.

Nov. 10: Cate & Fanny Mayberry went to Natchez. Cate sent Henry, to stay till she comes back.

Nov. 11: Mr Darden & Irene went to Natchez; started half after 8 oc. Buckner, Martha & Olivia will come to Natchez from Mary Scott’s.

Nov. 12: Mr Darden, Irene, Buckner, Martha & Olivia got home at sundown. Mr Darden sold 24 bales, That is 138 bales sold. Got tickets to Pros Montgomery’s wedding.

Nov. 13: Anne & Blount came this evening. They went to Mary Shaw’s & Archy Cameron’s wedding, Joe Darden & Miss Jones were bridesmaids. They had fine supper, a great many there; Rev. William Johnson married them.

Nov. 14: Leonly Briscoe sent for Blount at daylight. She was at Mrs. Torrey’s; her babe had spasm’s and Mrs Torrey was not at home, Mrs Torrey wished Blount to go & give her some assistance. Martha, Olivia & Mr. Darden went to Fayette with Anne; they met Blount there, Mrs.Torrey’s babe had been cold since 4 oclock this morning; it was not quite dead when Blount left. Dr. Duncan came in & said it was dead. Lizzy Hicks is very sick again. They have Dr. Duncan to see her.

Nov. 15: Joseph Sillers sold part of his place in Bolivar; got $30 an acre, $10,000 down; the balance in one & two years at 8% interest.

Nov 16: Mr. Darden, Buckner, Martha & I went to church at Greenwood; there vas a Commission meeting. Rev. Mr Doremus preached an excellent sermon. They have 30 Sabbath School scholars,

Nov. 18: Martha, Buckner, Laura & Dr Young went in our carriage. Cate, Fanny & Jack & Henry came by half after 9 oc.; they will have a long ways to go to the wedding. Sister Maria & the children, Miss Graves, Mr. Montgomery & Miss Cate Whitney all going to Pros & Routh’s wedding.

Nov. 19: Buckner, Martha, Laura & Dr. Young got back from the wedding half after 11 oc. They did not have any breakfast. There was great many there; danced all night.

Nov. 23: Dr Young went to John Chambliss’ in Jack’s buggy yesterday.

Nov. 24: Buckner went fox hunting; Cicero Stampley & Wat Burch were hunting with him; caught a wild cat yesterday; & a fox this morning.

Nov, 28: Dr Young & Put Darden came, stayed a hour. Sent Dick for Laura & Miss Sophia Graves.

Nov. 29: Miss Sophia & Laura came this morning. Dr Young came at 10 oc. Rev. Mr. Graves, Miss Sophia’s father came at 12 oc. Mr. Montgomery started to Bueff River with Jeff; got 30 miles on his way found the roads so bad that he came back Thursday evening. Ben Bullen stayed at Jack’s last night; he went to pay Cate some money.

Nov. 30: We went to church in Fayette; the Rev. Mr Graves preached. Buckner went to Mr Montgomery’ s to dinner. Sam Montgomery came by Cicero Stampley’s; eat supper.

Dec. 1: Mr Darden went to Jo Davenport’s. He has sold Cicero Stampley some land. Got A. Watkins to survey it. Cicero is not satisfied about it & wants Mr Darden & Father Robertson to ride over the land & say how many acres there was in the land. Rev. Mr Graves called, he said to let us know that Miss Graves (Sophie) would not teach any longer than Christmas, He said Mr Montgomery says her health is so bad that she is not able to do justice to her school. Ma came half after 3 oc. from Anne Briscoe’s in her carriage. Anne is mending slowly; just able to walk in her room. Martha got a note from Cate Whitney saying that she could not go to Anne Stuart’s on Wednesday as she promised. Martha is writing to Anne Briscoe’s.

Dec. 2: Dr Young went at 4 oc.; his bill with us was $12; at Cicero Stampley’s it was $37; for tending on Vol Stampley it was $31.

Dec. 3: The ground is frozen, ice in the pond. Sent the carriage to Jack’s for Ma; she came by and got warm, Old Mr Robertson came while she was here hired Sarah from her for $70 cash or $75 if she waits till the end of the year. Mr Darden paid Ma $130. She wanted to get Mr Montgomery to pay some accounts in Rodney.

Dec. 4: Sent for Ma at 11 oc., she had gone to spend the day at Mr. Stowers with Sister Maria. Lizzy Hicks was there; she looks very badly.

Dec. 5: Very cold, commenced sleeting at 7 oc. and snowing at half after. Snow is falling fast at 12; the ground very white; snowed some till 2 00. Made boiled custard & froze it for supper.

Dec. 6: Ma & Buckner went at 8 oc; Ma went in our carriage. Ma took Violet, Sarah’s youngest child; she is near ten years, Buckner had his riding horse; rode him to Natchez. He carried Michy the girl that his Pa bought him in Natchez. He hires Sophy that belongs to his Grandma, gives her $100 for her. She has been at Mary Scott’s 2 years. Ma left $45 to be made a present to Dr. Sam Hornsby; $50 to be paid to Sister Maria for some accounts; $25 to be paid to Dr. Nash that tended on her when she was at Sister Betsy’s; $10 for. He is waiting to hear from Dr. Beck’s; he says there is a vacant place near him.

Dec. 7: Mr Darden, Martha & Olivia went to church in Fayette; the Rev. Mr. Hart, an Agent, preached. It was Mr McCallum’s day, but he gave Mr Hart preference. Mr Darden had a letter from Mr Graves wishing to sell Miss Sophie’s melodeon to him when she gives up her school. Got a letter from Rev. Mr. Chase wishing his approbation to give the $100 that he gave to Oakland College four years ago, given to the Chamberlain fund. He wishes it to go now to pay the Professor in the College since Mr David Hunt has given $5000 to the college.

Dec. 8: Dr Young called; him & Cicero Stampley traded horses. He gave the Bay horse for Cicero’s Bald face sorrel.

Dec 11: Mr Darden saw Claud Pintard; he said Buckner got on the Natchez at 11 oc. Sunday night. The boat was going up to the Bend this trip.

Dec. 12: Mr Darden went to Fayette. Mr Carpenter saw mill near Cos. John Darden’s was burnt down Tuesday morning before day. They had a subscription paper for him in Fayette. There was between 3 & 4 hundred dollars subscribed. Mr Darden gave $25; John Whitney $100; Mr. W Stewart $50; John Darden $100. Mr Montgomery & Blount’s names were down. I do not know how much.

Dec 13: Mr Darden rode down to Jack’s with Dr. Young. They are weather boarding Jack’s house,

Dec. 14: We went to church in Fayette. The Rev. Mr. Smyley preached an excellent sermon; not many there.

Dec. 15: Took 12 bales to Natchez. That makes 160 bales. Dr. Young came to bid us goodbye this morning. He will leave for the Swamp in the morning. He will locate at Trenton, La.

Dec. 16: Martha & Olivia spent the day at Coz Margaret Darden’s.

Dec. 17: Mr Darden had fever all night. Got a letter from Buckner; he got home safe. His grandma complained of the cold on the Wharf Boat; she sat up all night; there was no cover on the bed she did not lie down. They had about 4 days picking; would make 197 bales. Martha got a note from Mary Montgomery; they want to surprise Sam Montgomery Christmas eve.

Dec. 18: Sam Montgomery came this evening, He wants Mr Darden to act as appraiser of the property of his Father’s estate.

Dec. 19: This is Miss Sophia Graves last day; her health will not permit her to teach longer. Mr Graves came at dark. He wants to borrow our buggy & horse to carry his daughter home. Pros Montgomery & Routh came to Mr Montgomery’s Wednesday eve.

Dec. 21: Rev. Mr. Graves preached at Ebenezer today. Mr Darden was not well enough to go.

Dec 22: Mr Darden went to John B, Montgomery’s; Montgomary, Blount Stuart, Elbert Guice & Mr Scott were the appraisers, There was 50 negroes to be divided. William Montgomery gave Mrs. Piercefield the interest in the land. Cicero Stampley was here this evening. He says old Mrs Miles had died at Wild Wood Springs. Mary Jane sent Cee to let the girls know about the party at Coz. Sam Montgomery’s. Routh & Pros. went back to Mr. Chambliss’ this morning. Naomi Chambliss has bought Phil Dougherty’s place; gave $12,000; $6,000 now & $6,000 next January.

Dec. 24: I had a turkey killed for the girls to carry to their cousin Sam Montgomery’s party; left at 10 oclock, went to their Uncle Buckner’s to dinner.

Dec 25: Martha & Olivia got home half after 12 oc, They danced all night, There was a good many there; had a pleasant party. They went to their Uncle Buckner’s to breakfast and came home. Bell sent word Matilda & Joseph Sillers would be down in 2 weeks. The gentlemen that called here inquiring the way to Sam Darden’s was a cousin of Anna Darden’s. His name is Mr. Armstrong. He is a merchant in St. Louis. Mr Graves got a letter from home saying his babe about 4 month’s old was dead.

Dec. 27: Sam Darden came after 11 oc. Anna Darden, Amelia Green & Mr. Armstrong came after 12 oc.; stayed all night at Mrs Torrey’s. Olivia went to Cate’s this morning to invite them to Mary Jane Darden’s party on New Years. Hiram Chambliss & Jeff Whitney came at 5 oclock.

Dec. 28: Coz Hiram Chambliss & Jeff Whitney went home.

Dec. 29: Mr Darden & Olivia went to Fayette, saw Anne & Blount, Sidney Briscoe had his arm broken. Dr. Fox set it – girth broke, saddle turned.

Dec. 30: I became a life member of the American Bible Society by giving $30. Mr Darden has been a member of the A. & Foreign Bible Society for 15 years.

Dec. 31: They packed 178 bales this year, 3 more than was packed last year.
