Charles Edward Gilbert, Sr., 84, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2012, in Gautier, MS. Born in Biloxi, MS, on October 14, 1927, he was the eleventh of twelve children born to Alphonse and Henrietta Daniel Gilbert. In 1945, he enlisted and served as a Military Policeman with the 1380th Army Air Force Base Unit stationed at Fort Pepperell, Newfoundland and received the American Theater Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Commission. She was recognized by the City of Gautier for her efforts in

of Pascagoula, MS, passed away May 5, 2012 at Covington County Hospital
in Collins, MS. He had been a resident of the U.S. Veterans Home in
Collins since August 2011. Willie was born on March 12, 1927 in
Pascagoula, the son of William Daniel and Effie Jane Cain Firth. He was a
member of the Pascagoula High School graduating class of 1945. He
enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of seventeen and served on
the USS Enterprise during World War II. Willie was preceded in death by
his parents, his brother Stova Firth, and sisters Elma Firth Russell
and Dorris Firth Watts. Private service.

Mary Juanita Martin Bilbo, 96, passed
away May 19, 2012 in Ocean Springs. She was born August 22, 1915 at
Martin’s Bluff in Gautier. Juanita was raised on a farm with her parents
and 12 siblings, in a time when horse and buggy were still a common
mode of travel and work. She was a dedicated church worker at Belle
Fountain Baptist Church, which was founded in 1890 by her father-in-law,
Walter Ray Bilbo and his two brothers, for many decades. When Juanita
married Bryan Bilbo on May 24, 1934, he was a muskrat trapper and had
his own farm. Juanita is preceded in death by her parents, James and
Olive Martin; husband, William Bryan Bilbo; children, Betty Lou Bilbo
Cox and William Larry Bilbo; and grandson, Stanford F. Browning.

He was stationed in Hawaii and served aboard the USS Shangri-La, CV-38. During this tenure in 1946, he participated in Project Crossroads at Bikini Atoll, the 2 Atom Bomb tests.

preceded in death by her parents, Ephraim and Shirley Barnes, one
brother, Glennis Earl "Nick" Barnes, and one sister, Eloise "Bobbie"
Russell; grandparents, Charlie and Lenora Barnes, and King and Caroline
Hubbard. She is survived by seven sisters and two brothers. The funeral

Arvis Vertis “Sid” Cumbest, 83, of Pascagoula, passed away Sept. 17 in Pascagoula. Preceding his death, were his parents, Eli and Neelia Cumbest, five older brothers: Julius, Lloyd, Dennis, Donald, Gerald and a sister, Hilda Cumbest Carter. Mr. Cumbest was born July 16, 1929, in Wade, MS. He began his work experience at Cumbest Sawmill and later was employed by International Paper and Ingalls Shipyard before beginning the practice of law. He was a Korean War Veteran and practiced law for over 50 years in civil and criminal litigation in all Mississippi Federal and State Courts. He, and his brother, Donald, were the founding partners of Cumbest, Cumbest, Hunter & McCormick. Admitted to the Bar in 1958, he practiced until 2004, when at 75, he retired and became of counsel to the firm. He served as Attorney and Prosecutor for the City of Moss Point for five years. In Pascagoula he served as part-time City prosecutor for 12 years. Elected twice, Mr. Cumbest was the Jackson County Prosecuting attorney from 1982 -1990. Professional Memberships include the Mississippi State Bar for more than 50 years, Jackson County Bar Association, American Bar Association, Mississippi Association for Justice, American Association for Justice and the Joel Blass Chapter of the American Inns of Court. Enthralled by his family history in Jackson County, he loved researching and discovering their past events. He was especially proud of his ancestry and their contribution to the development and progress of Jackson County. He prided himself by creating albums of family events, photographs and genealogical articles for family members. He and his brother, Donald, worked to preserve the Pascagoula River Basin for enjoyment of all. Funeral Services at Caswell Springs United Methodist Church.

23, 2012. He was born on November 20, 1927, and was a lifelong resident
of Cumbest Bluff. Elvis was the son of Roy O. Cumbest and Mattie Cauley
Cumbest. He graduated Wade High School in 1946 and for a time taught
school there. He began his career at Cumbest Manufacturing Co., Inc.
(Cumbest Sawmill) a company his father, Roy, started in 1939 in the
Cumbest Bluff Community of Jackson County. Upon the death of his father,
he and his two brothers, Lum and Hillard were the owner-operators of
the Sawmill until they retired and closed the operation in 1998. He was
the Vice President of the company. Preceded in death by
