The flyer (below) provides details of the next meeting of the Copiah County Historical and Genealogical Society. In brief, the meeting is
June 4th, 6:30 p.m. at the Hazlehurst United Methodist Church, Family Life Center (gym) - enter through the daycare door.
Attached is the new membership form. We now have a P.O. Box!
Please pass this along to anyone you think may be interested. I will be creating a newsletter this summer - just one more benefit of joining.
For those of you who can't make the next meeting, below is a brief overview of some of the things the Society is working on.
First, we are working with the Hazlehurst Library in the genealogy room,
taking an inventory of the scrapbooks, family histories and photographs. We hope to have the project completed by the end of June.
Second, on June 5th I will ask the C.S. City Aldermen to pass a
preservation ordinance so a preservation committee can be established. This will allow the City to apply for grants, etc. through the preservation program of the Miss. Dept. of Archives and
History. Funds can be used for the restoration of historical structures, for example. I will approach each city in the county about this. We may be able to get something passed countywide.
Another project we are working on, which will require $1600, is the purchase of a historical marker to be placed in Railroad Park in Crystal Springs in honor of those who were injured or lost their
lives in the bus/passenger train wreck which occurred August 5th, 1942, in Crystal Springs. People from all over the country were on that bus in which 13 were killed. We think a marker is a
fitting tribute.
The Society gladly accepts contributions. Please remember, we are a nonprofit organization and must raise funds for all projects. Please send your contributions to
CCHGS P.O. Box 111 Crystal Springs, MS 39059
A lot of exciting things are happening. I would love to hear from you if you have any ideas, comments, etc. Hope to see you at the next meeting.
