DEATH CLAIMS DR. W.A. SWEAT,
A 51 year old surgeon here, who was a native of Corinth, died of
"self inflicted" gunshot wounds Saturday afternoon, according to
Hinds County authorities.
Dr. William Andrew Sweat died at Baptist Hospital
about three hours after he was admitted, the Hinds County coroner
reported.
Born in Corinth in 1919, he was the son of Mrs. W.C. Sweat,
Corinth and the late Mr. Sweat. He was educated in
the public schools of Corinth and received his BS and MD degrees
from Vanderbilt University.
He was a diplomate of the American Board Surgery, and a member of
the American College of Surgeons and the Mississippi State Medical
Association.
Survivors include his widow, the former Martha Oursler
of Humbolt, Tennessee, of the home; four children; Mary Lee of New
Orleans, Meredith, a student of Vanderbilt, Andrew Donelson, a
student at Ole Miss, and John Walter, a student at Brinkley High
School; two brothers W.C. Sweat, Jr., Corinth, and
Dr. Jonathan M. Sweat, Jackson; and a sister, Mrs.
R.L. Shirley, Florence, Alabama.
Funeral services were held in Jackson today.
