S. Macey Johnson III Thursday, February 10, 2000
I am looking for exact locations of former dwellings that were built and occupied by my ancestors in Wilkinson County.
(1) The original SEMPLE house "Desert" still exists in Pincneyville, MS.  It was built ca. 1811. Currently a B&B. No problem to find.
(2) Another SEMPLE Mansion-  "Wyoming"-   was built ca. 1840. It was a beautiful 3 story plantation home that burned in early 1900-10.  All I know is that it was located 10 miles SE of downtown Woodville.  Possibly some bricks remain from what once was a beautiful house!
(3) "Bowling Green"  was the McGEHEE Plantation. It was burned by Yankees in 1864. Three of it's columns still survive today. Thanks to the markers and Ms. Mary McGEHEE's efforts, it is easy to find.
(4) "Elleray"  was the BURRISS home. It is located near Bowling Green as Judge McGEHEE gave this land to his daughter (Sarah HOUSTON) when she married John BURRIS. My parents have a painting of this home dating from 1850. "Elleray" was built ca. 1831 and burned sometime between
1870-1900. Family members have been to this site in the 1980's, and the land is now owned by a nice retired couple in Wilkinson Co.  However, no one can remember how to find the exact location.
Any Ideas Would Be Appreciated,,,, Thanks.
