Company H - Vicksburg Volunteers Uniform: Red shirts worn outside white duck pants and black slouch hat Vicksburg Volunteers left Vicksburg in early July 1846 by steamboat bound for New Orleans. Left New Orleans on board the steamboat Alabama 26 Jul 1846 bound for Brazos Island, Texas, commanded by Colonel Jefferson Davis. Vicksburg Whig, 27 Oct 1846: "When I saw the place [Monterrey], every house . . . is a perfect fort of itself and was fortified; . . . every street was barricaded and ditched . . . . I cannot for the life of me see how we made such progress into the town as we did, without losing more men . . . "
