Thomas Hawthorne Family

Descendants of Thomas Hawthorn

Generation No. 1

 1.  Thomas4 Hawthorn  (David Hazlep3 Hathorn, James "Jimmy"  R.2, James1) was born May 01, 1809 in Abbeville Co., SC, and died September 20, 1882 in Bethany ARP Cemetery, Brices Cross Roads, MS.  He married Polly Ann "Annie" Richey 1831 in Abbeville Co. SC, daughter of William Richey and Believe notes).  She was born November 18, 1814 in Abbeville Co., SC, and died May 15, 1894 in Bethany ARP Cemetery, Brices Cross Roads, MS.

Notes for Thomas Hawthorn:
In fall of 1856 Thomas and "Anna" traveled by wagon train from Due West to Tippah County, MS.  They were accompanied by their children and other members of their famlies as well members of the Agnew, Haddon, and James Martin families.   Also in this group was Anna's brother, Robert Caldwell Richey and his family as well as Andrew Jackson Hawthorne, son of Andrew Cowan Hawthorn.  Andrew went on to Arkansas.  (See other notes under his name)  John Martin (1821-97) had moved to Tippah County (now Union) in the early 1850's and sent back glowing reports about the fetility of the soil and the good opportunities there for settlers.

Union County was formed in 1870 by combining parts of Tippah, Pontotoc, and Lee Counties.  The area where the Hawthornes lived was on the very edge of the new Union/Tippah county line.

Rode over to Mr. Wm. Sanders where there was an appointment for preaching. Mr. Sanders united with the Church this evening. He is prostrated on a bed of sickness having had a long and severe spell of fever. He has a large and painful rising back of his left jaw under the ear. He thinks he is some better but is still very weak. Mr. Young preached from Matt 11:28. After preaching 4 or 5 of his children were baptized by Mr. Robison. I remember the following names. Anna Fair Jefferson Davis Rebecca &c. On Yesterday Thomas Augustus and Margaret Henrietta Hawthorne were baptized.

COMMENTS:

Who are these two Hawthorne children?  I would assume that these are either Thomas & "Anny's" or Harvey and  "Emma's".  If my records are correct, Harvey's son Thomas was born in 1865 so I would assume that this was Thomas's son who was born 1853.  If this was Thomas's son then it would seem that Margaret Henrietta would have also been one of his children.

 2.  Harvey A.5 Hawthorn (Thomas4, David Hazlep3 Hathorn, James "Jimmy"  R.2, James1) was born September 15, 1832 in Abbeville County, SC, and died December 12, 1898 in Cotton Plant, MS, Tippah Co..  He married Amaranda "Emma" B. Moore January 18, 1860 in Believe Tippah Co. MS, daughter of Thomas Moore and Nancy E..  She was born October 10, 1838 in Tennessee, and died August 17, 1896 in Believe Tippah County, MS.

Notes for Harvey A. Hawthorn:
The middle initial "A" probably stood for Agustus as one of Harvey's younger sisters married Tandy Gassaway and they named one of their sons Harvey Agustus Gassaway.

I find a marriage to Emeranda "Amanda" Moore recorded in the "Marriages of Tippah Co." which was compiled by the Tippah Co. Historical Society, Ripley, MS.

I know that Harvey served in the Civil War.

The 1866 State Census of Tippah County (taken from newsletter published
by the Tippah County Heritage Society) Shows Harvey's household as containing one male between 30-40 and one female between 20-30.  It also reports one male and one female as all being under the age of 10 years.   (If these are Amanda's children they would be under the age of 6 years as according to marriage records she and Harvey were married in 1860)  Thomas A was born to Emeranda (Amanda) or (Emma) Moore on 9/16/1865.

I found a listing of the Hawthornes buried in the family plot located in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Cotton Plant, MS, however, the info on the tombstones identifies only two of them as sons of H. A. & E.B.

Thomas A. (b 9/16/1865)  and H. Lee (b. 1/19/1869)

Note:

Havey A. seemed to have used the older spelling of the name. (like his
father Thomas Hawthorn)

Every pleasure of life has its corresponding pain, for every attempt to soothe we must inflict a sting.  In nothing is this so apparent as in writing a memorial of the loved dead.  Especially is it trying to the writer when the departed loved one has lived a willfully erring life.  But in the case now before us there is no need to indulge in studied phrase to gild the life of a fondly remembered and loved one.

Thomas Hawthorne was one of those rare characters who lift the world better because he had lived in it.  His was a pure noble useful life all too short for those who knew him only to love and enjoy him.  A petted child, he was not spoiled, indulged in boyhood, he was ever respectful and obedient.  Never restrained by loving parents he chose to be the prop and stay of father and mother in their declining days.

In the neighborhood noted for Christian parents and well raised children.  Thomas stood far in the lead of many most promising young men.  Rich, glorious old Pontotoc, the garden spot of our state, has been the birth place of great should whose lives will ever make bright the pages of her history but she has never produced a brighter more promising life than that of Thomas Hawthorne,  The aged and very young children, young maidens and young men, acquaintances, companions and intimate friends, all spoke of him in tears of love and highest praise whenever and where ever assembled.  He made no enemies and young and old admired his bearing and held him up as a model most worthy of imitation.

A very dear sister who live nearest to Tomie's home and who has been a deeply interested observer of youth says in a letter just read. "Thomas was twenty-one years of age Dec. 21, 1896.  He was killed while crossing railroad June 13, following.  He was on his way to church, and every ready to give pleasure, carried his grandmother as far as Mr. Ben Liddell's and leaving her, took one of his little girls with him.  Full of happiness in the pleasure of others, dreaming not that this would be his last drive or that he was so near to the land from which there is no return.

About a week previous he had driven his mother out, a frequent act of thoughtfulness and kindness of his, and told her of his plans for the future.  He wanted to read, study, and see more of the great world on
which life's battle must be fought.  He was industrious, talented, and did well all kinds of work.  It was not in his nature to slight anything but tried to excel in all he did.  His grandmother said recently while
speaking of him that she never looked in any direction that she did not see some of his work.  He was as pure and refined as a gentle girl.  Truthful, noble tribute to the most deserving young man, a lovely,
promising brief life so suddenly brought to a close.  Alas! alas! we live but to die.  The body returns to its mother dust, and soul,  Tomie's soul was transported at once, without warning, without a pain, unmarred, spotless to life eternal, bliss everlasting.

On that fatal Sabbath day, on his way to the house of God, in gentle haste all unexpected this brave Young heart met the grim message of death one half mile from New Albany just where the dirt road crossed the F. C. railroad.  The passenger train rushing on with velocity and power resistless, but sometimes swiftly and silently as a bird on wing, thus it was that Thomas did not hear the moving engine which swept on just as he was about to cross, hurling horses, vehicle and occupants from its path and piled all into a mangled mass of ruin.  Blood and death.  The vehicle was splintered, both horses were instantly killed, the beautiful little girl and noble youth only breathed a few hours after colliding with the flying engine.  The seeming thoughtless monster was the instrumentality of a boundless misery.

In a few hours the supple manly form of Tomie lay without a fain felt in the hush of death.  In a briefer moment his soul was rejoicing in the presence of the Father of the Heavenly Paradise.  When the account of the accident was flashed over the wires the people of town of New Albany, the people of the surrounding countries and the State were shocked as such happening alone can shock.

But dear mother and father, grieve not, kind brothers, loving sister, revered grandmother sorrow not, dry your tears.  You shall when He calls meet the devoted son, tender brother, enduring friend glorified by the Father.  Days, weeks, months have passed, still the memory of this dear boy is and will ever remain as fresh as in life.  He is with the angels, yet he is our for an everlasting possession.  Let us all live as Thomas lived.  follow his foot print and at last meet him around the throne of the ever adored Father each of us rejoicing in as much as he calls first whom he loves best.

          A friend of The Family

Their only son was born in Columbus, MS and their first daughter was born in Meridian, MS.  They lived in Tupelo, MS, for a while and then returned to New Albany where they stayed until  c1957.  Everette was offered a promotion in Natchez, MS. where they bought a house and moved their family.  His son met and married his wife, Nancy Lee Manceaux, while they were in Natchez.

Everette and Opal owned three houses in New Albany.  The first was on North Street, the second was on Glade Street, and the third, on David Street.  They owned, and were living in, this house on David Street when they died.

Everette was very active in the First Methodist Church of New Albany before they
moved to Natchez,  when they returned after spending two years, he joined and became active in a small Methodist church that was located on Hwy. #15 bypass about 1/2 mile east of the intersection of Old Hwy 78 and the Hwy. 15 by pass.  This was a neighborhood church and was insight of their David Street home.

Everette was a Mason, though not active, and the past president of the local Lions and Civitan Clubs.

Everette started woodworking after he retired and developed a good repetition for quality work.  He made a grandfather clock for his son and a wall clock for his grandson, Keith Hawthorne.  There were a number of pieces in his home that were passed on to his children at Opal's death.  His oldest daughter, Sylvia, received a matching grandfather clock to the one he had made for his son.  His only daughter-in-law, Nancy Lee Manceaux Hawthorne, received a stacked walnut secretary that is about 32" wide and 65" tall.  The lower section has a hinged desk top that closes to cover the pigeon holes and small internal drawers, there are also has two full size drawers for storage.  The top section has three shelves and two full length hinged glass doors that close to protect anything stored on the shelves.

The third child, Elizabeth Dixon, was born with down syndrome.  She lived
with her parents during her childhood and then she lived in special
institutions.  At this time (10/26/1999) she is living in the East Haven Home, 332 Vaiden Drive, Hernando, MS.
