This company subsequently became Company H, 23rd Regiment Mississippi Infantry. The 2d Regiment, 1st Brigade, Mississippi Volunteers, was organized during the months of June, July, August, and September, 1861 for State service, to serve one year. It was transferred to the Confederate service September 19, 1861, and the designation was changed to 23d Regiment Mississippi Infantry by S.O. No. 228, A.&I.G.O., dated November 19, 1861. The Regiment was captured at Fort Donelson in February, 1862, and was exchanged about September 20, 1862. It was reorganized for an additional term of two years about September 20, 1862. This Regiment was also known as the 3rd Regiment Mississippi Infantry. About April 9, 1865, the 23d Regiment Mississippi Infantry was consolidated with the 15th, 16th and the 20th Regiments Mississippi Infantry and formed the 15th Consolidated Regiment Mississippi Infantry Note: |
