“State of Mississippi,
“Tishomingo, Miss.
“For and in consideration of
the sum of $2,000 lawful money in hand, paid by Joseph
Carter to David Carter, the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged, the said David Carter has bargained, sold and
delivered to Joseph Carter, his heirs, executors,
administrators and assigns four Negro slaves for life – one
woman named Rachel, one man named Abraham, one man named
Peter and one girl named Violet, all of whom are sold sound,
healthy and sensible. The said David Carter will warrant
and forever defend.
“In witness whereof the said
David Carter hath hereunto set his hand and seal this 18th
day of May, A.D., 1837, and the sixty-second of American
Independence.
