A special thanks to Tommy
Covington
and the Tippah County Historical and Genealogical Society for allowing
us to publish this transcribed version of the 1870Tippah
County Federal Census, and to W. Fred Cox for getting them ready to go
online. As with any transcribed record if you question the
contents
please verify the information with the original documents. If the
error is documented wrong by the transcriber please
contact
me and I will gladly correct it in this transcription.
Notes:
- The
information
is listed as follows; first name or intials, last name, age, sex,
occupation,
value of real estate, value of personal property, state of birth, and
household
number if they are living with another family or location.
- These
census
records were divided into East and West Tippah County and include the
original
boundaries of the County before reconstruction. Ripley post
office
took the numeration for East Tippah, and covered the areas similar to
the
current county boundaries. The numeration for West Tippah were
taken
at Salem, with similar boundaries to what is now Benton County.
Both
Ripley and Salem includes some of what is now Union County.
- If
the person
you are researching has a number listed to the right side of their
numeration,
check the household index to find out where they were living at the
time
the census was taken.
- The
household
indexes were created after the census was transcribed and put into
alphabetical
order to link people living in households other than their own.
