W. P. A. History of Pontotoc County, Mississippi

CHAPTER 1 CONTINUED

CAMPGROUND had its beginning in the Mount Pleasant Church which was organized in an Indian hut in 1836; the first quarterly conference was held there in 1839, when trustees were given land for the Camp Ground and Church.  Some of the early settlers were James R. Calloway, William B. Wilks, Billy Cooper, Wiley Hubbard, Dempsey Hubbard, Abe Duke, and Jess Hancock.  Cooper was the architect for the Chickasaw College; with Wiley Hubbard, he did brick work in Pontotoc County.  There was also a school at Camp Ground which was well attended.
