Old Settlements

The heyday of PLYMOUTH was in the eighties and early nineties. With the establishment of the Plymouth Normal College (See Chap. 13 Education) by Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Johnston on their property eight miles east of Pontotoc on the Verona road, the town spran up over night as it were. Parents frpm many sections came to this vicinity to enter their children in school. New dwellings went up, stores were opened, gins erected, and for a time the thrifty little village bade fair to become one of the leading towns in the county. The families prominent in the life of the village were J. L. Johnston, John Johnston, Bob Atkins, Carter Lowery, Joseph Hester, Dr. George Lowrey, Ed Simmons, Elias Jenkins, Tom Simmons, the Ginns, Grants, Doc Gilder, Dr. Andy Johnson, Manahans, Hubbards, and others. The passing of the school was the death warrant to the village. It went into a gradual decline and today (1938) there is hardly a vestige of this once populous little town.
