Hurricane High School

The information and photographs on the following pages came from a book that was created by the Pilot Club of Ecru as a fund raiser for the Ecru Fire Department. The club has since disbanned, but Debbie Anderson received permission from Donna Mooney, President of the Pilot Club and compiler of the book "The Way We Were" to post this information here.

Hurricane School

The school building referred to by many as "the little red schoolhouse" was described by Mrs. Elizabeth Dorrough Swords and Mr. Frank Spears as being a three-room, L-shaped structure located where the teacher's home is now. It was bought by Martin Hearn and converted into a dwelling. Next came the two-story building built in 1920 or 1921, later remodeled by the W.P.A., and finally destroyed by a fire. Students from several one-room, one-teacher elementary schools such as Smoke Top, Who's a Thought it (Pleasant Grove), Buchanan, 'Possum Trot (Bethlehem), and Resin Ridge completed their education through the tenth grade at Hurricane. When fire destroyed the frame building, classes were held in the basement of the Hurricane Baptist Church until the brick building was completed. The Class of 1948 was the first to graduate in the brick building.
