Men from Pike
and Marion counties served in the 13th Regiment Mississippi Militia, under Col.
Nixon. The unit is often referred to as "Nixon's Regiment". A brief
history of the unit and the battles in which it fought can be found in Military
History of Mississippi 1803-1898 by Dunbar Rowland (Spartanburg, South
Carolina, The Reprint Company, 1988.) on pages 6-8. A roster of the unit is
given in Source Records From Pike County, Mississippi 1798-1910 by Luke
Ward Conerly and E. Russ Williams, Jr. (Greenville, South Carolina, Southern
Historical Press, Inc., 1978.) on pages 1-3 of Part II.
The National
Archives and Records Administration has filmed an Index to Compiled Service
Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During The War of 1812 (Microcopy
M602, Rolls 1 through 234) and a Compiled Service Records of Volunteer
Soldiers Who Served During the War of 1812 in Organizations From the Territory
of Mississippi (Microcopy M678, Rolls 1 through 22. Nixon's Regiment is on
Rolls 17 through 20.) These film series are widely available at state libraries
and archives and larger genealogical libraries.
Listed in the
table below are the units raised from Pike County for service in the
Confederate States Army, Mississippi State Troops or Pike County Home Guard.
The information was extracted from two sources:
Military
History of Mississippi 1803-1898 by Dunbar Rowland. (Spartanburg, South
Carolina, The Reprint Company, 1988.) This book lists the companies within each
regiment, the officers of the regiment and company, and gives a brief history
of the battles in which the regiment fought and also names some of the
regiment's casualties.
Source
Records From Pike County, Mississippi 1798-1910 by Luke Ward Conerly
and E. Russ Williams, Jr.. (Greenville, South Carolina, Southern Historical
Press, Inc., 1978.) Rosters of the companies are given in this book and in some
instances a brief history of the particular company is also given. The page
numbers given are from Part I of the book.
The National
Archives and Records Administration has filmed a Consolidated Index to
Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers (Microcopy M253, Rolls 1
through 535) and an Index to Compiled Service Records of Confederate
Soldiers Who Served in Organizations From the State of Mississippi
(Microcopy M232, Rolls 1 through 45.) These film series are widely available at
state libraries and archives and larger genealogical libraries.
Capsule
histories of the units below are posted on the Mississippi Sons of Confederate Veterans webpage in the Mississippi
History section of the page.
The 33rd Mississippi (CSA) Infantry webpage includes a roster of members and a detailed
history of events and battles in which the unit participated.
