Sherard Gray

Sherard Gray was born on February 3, 1793 in Richmond, Virginia and died on December 5, 1845 in Amite County, MS. He is buried in the Sherard Gray Cemetery in
Pike County, MS.  He came from Richmond to Pike County about 1820 and by 1835 is shown on the Pike County tax list owning 320 acres.

Gray married Mary Hamilton in 1816.  She was born in 1801 in South Carolina or Tennessee (1850 Census) and died in October 1860 in Amite County.  She was a sister
to Dr. Hans Hamilton.

Children of Sherard and Mary H. Gray:

1. Mijaman S. Gray was born February 4, 1819 and died February 28, 1853.  He married Rachel Andrews who was born on May 18, 1817 and died January 4, 1854.  They
are both buried in the Sherard Gray Cemetery, Pike County, MS.  One child: Thomas Sherod Gray.

 2. TamantineTamentha” Gray was born May 27, 1820 and died September 17, 1896 in Pike County, MS.  She married Peter Arthur Quinn on December 22, 1836.  He
was the son of Richard and Mary (Graham) Quin and was born on December 24, 1812 and died November 7, 1880.  They are buried in the Quin Cemetery, Pike County, MS.  Children:  Lewis Hillery Quin born 1834, Sherod Quin born 1836, Salena Elizabeth Quin born Jan. 1838 in Pike County and married Dr. Rowland T. Hart, Thaddus
Quin born 1850, and James M. Quin born 1853. 

3. Thaddeus Warsaw Gray was born January 25, 1825 in MS and died October 5, 1884 in Limestone, Texas. He married Selena Jane Burris on October 23, 1849 in Amite
County, MS.  Selena was the daughter of George Nelson and Elizabeth (Thompson) Burris. She was born January 27, 1834 and died October 8, 1920 in Limestone, Texas. 
They are buried in Ebenezer Cemetery in Kosse, Limestone, TexasChildren:  Minnie Gray born 1862 in Amite County married James Kervin Price and died 1904, Kosse,
Limestone, Texas; Arie Gray born January 26, 1869 Amite County, married William Robert Harper on December 15, 1883, and died December 12, 1903 Limestone, Texas;
and Burris Enos Gray born 1876 Amite County, married Laura L. Hobbs, and died June 19, 1914. 

4. Catherine Gray was born January 16, 1827 and died about April 14, 1904.  She married #1 John H. McGehee (son of William C. and Sarah Jane (Scott) McGehee, born
December 16, 1821 and died February 2, 1870 in Amite County, buried in John H. McGehee Cemetery) and #2 Col. John Winfield Sharp on February 2, 1887 in Pike County.
She’s also buried in the John McGehee Cemetery, Amite County, MS.  Col. Sharp was Chief of Police of Summit, MS and son of George and Mary Musadore Hamilton
Sharp.

Children of Catherine and John McGehee: Jane Alzenith McGehee born March 7, 1845 and died July 2, 1853, Mary Alice McGehee born January 30, 1847 and died
August 12, 1862, Iverson H. L. McGehee born February 17, 1850 and died October 7, 1854, and Cora Monette McGehee born August 27, 1856 and died October 28, 1858. 
All the children are buried in the John H. McGehee Cemetery. 

5. Eviline Gray was born January 16, 1827 and died May 14, 1904 in Amite County.  She married #1 William Ray Harvey and #2 Rev. Ben Crawford.  She’s buried in John
McGehee Cemetery, Amite County, MS.

6. Selena/Celina Ann Gray born 1828 in Amite County and married Hatton C. Weathersby on February 24, 1852 in Amite County. Hatton was son of Lewis and Mary
(Culpepper) Weathersby and was born in 1797 in Barnwell District, SC.  Child: Mary TamentandFamitana” Weathersby born 1854 in Amite County, MS.

7. Lemuel Henry Gray was born 1830 in Pike County and died in New Orleans, LA.  He married #1 Ellen (Elvirae) Guinn and #2 Aletha Ann Everett on November 8, 1859 in Amite County.  Ellen died November 29, 1854 and is buried at Ginn Cemetery, Walthall County, MS.  Children:  Laura Tamentary Gray born 1852 and George Lution Gray born 1855.

Aletha Ann Everett, the daughter of Thomas Francis and Nancy Ann (Felder) Gray, was born 1842 in Amite County, MS and died in 1915 in Sabine, Texas.  Children of Lemuel and Aletha:  Mary Gray born 1860 Pike County, MS, Lizare Gray born 1863 in Pike County, MS, Julia A. Gray born 1865 in Pike County, MS, John Henry Gray born February 28, 1871 at Cains, Franklin County, MS, died June 30, 1952, and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tyson, Yalobusha County, MS., Luther C. Gray born July 29, 1876, and Marshall Sidney Gray born October 31, 1864/5 in Pike County, MS.

8. Margaret Gray was born on February 13, 1833, died March 7, 1895 in Hinds County, MS. and is buried in Terry Cemetery, Hinds County, MS.  She married William P. J. Jones, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Stovall) Jones. William was born February 12, 1829 and died April 9, 1882 in Hinds County, MS. and is also buried in Terry Cemetery.  Children:  Thomas S. Jones born about 1855, Albert C. Jones born about 1859, Mary E. Jones born about 1860, Emma J. Jones born about 1862, Cicero W. Jones born February 24, 1864, died June 8, 1885, and is buried in Terry Cemetery, Katie Jones born October 23, 1865, died November 25, 1896 in Hinds County, MS and is buried in Terry Cemetery.

9. Cicero Gray was born in 1835 and died March 27, 1894.  He married #1 Isopline L Butler on October 4, 1866 in Amite County and #2 Camiletta Jones on December 1, 1891 in Amite County.  Isopline, the daughter of Aaron Harris and Emily (Collins) Butler, was born February 18, 1845, died July 6, 1891 and is buried in Zion Hill Cemetery, Amite County, MS. 

10. Sophia Almira Gray was born September 7, 1837 in Pike County and died May 7, 1922 in Cedar Grove, Caddo Parish, LA. She married #1 James Aurelius ‘Reel’ Thompson who died in 1864 in Amite County, and #2 John H. Hucabee on January 9, 1868. Children of Sophia and James:  Inez Thompson, Joey Thompson born about 1857, Tamintha Thompson born about 1861, and Sophia Aureliass Thompson born about 1864, married Lewis B. Wilson, and died April 24, 1927 in Shreveport, LA. 

John H. Hucabee, the son of John Hucabee was born about 1828, served in Co. E, 22 Miss Calvary CSA. Children:  Cora Hucabee born about 1869, Alwin Amsey Hucabee born November 30, 1874 in Amite County, died May 23 1944 in Memphis, Shelby, TN, and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, William Oliver ‘Ollie’ Hucabee, born about 1877, married Lena Vance and died November 16, 1946 in Shreveport, Caddo, LA. 

11. Sherod Gray was born 1839 in Pike County and died August 1861 in Amite County.  He married Margaret Bracey, daughter of Harrison and Elizabeth (McGowan) Bracey.  

12. Isaiah S. Gray was born September 6, 1844 in Mississippi and died October 28, 1909 in San Antonio, Texas.  He married Sarah Jane Gardner on December 23, 1869 in Amite County.  She was the daughter of William Gardner, was born February 17, 1844 in MS and died December 14, 1914 in San Antonio, Bexar, TX.
