Griffin Cemetery

The Griffin Cemetery is located approximately three miles south of the W. W. Ashe Nursery off the Ashe Nursery Road just across the Forrest / Perry county line in Perry county on the east side of the road. This is one of the older family cemeteries in the Brooklyn area, with some internments in the mid 1800's. The cemetery has the remnants of an iron fence that is reported to have been sent here from Georgia. There are four marked graves outside of the fence that are said to be descendants of the slaves that were owned by Walter Calvin "Cal" Griffin. There are three other graves on the outside of the fence that are marked only with bricks. It has been told that there are several other "slave graves" in that same area and that an area on the north side of the cemetery had been used by the local Indians in the 1800's as a burial site.
