This is taken from the W. P. A. County History for Perry County, Mississippi. The section on population was prepared by Lessie Maxwell and is dated June 10, 1936. According to the report there were 2,748 colored in Perry County at that time but she did not specify whether she meant colored persons or families. There were many colored preachers, one colored merchant, and one colored private shop owner. Canvassers who gathered the information were Pearl Odom, Jessie Walker, Lessie Maxwell and Mamie McDonald.
