Perry County Post Offices
The first Post Office established in Perry
County was in Augusta on 20 Feb 1821. Some records show the first post
office established on 10 May 1831, however, this is incorrect. Other Post
Offices in the area were:

Here are some interesting facts, some that relate to the Martin family
line:
-
-Eliza Martin Berry, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Martin, was appointed
postmaster of Augusta on 15 Oct 1866.
-Joseph T. Breland was first postmaster of Beaumont.
-The Breland post office was named after Isaiah L. Breland. It was only
open for 3 months, 2 Mar-5 Jun 1898. Isaiah died and the post office never
reopened.
-Vesta Howard was postmaster of Grandee in 1904. Her son, Wyatt M.
Howard,"Mart", was postmaster in 1906.
-The Agnes post office was located on the property that once belonged to
Samuel Martin. Samuel & Rebecca sold the property about 1870 and moved to
Marion County. The Agnes post office was opened on the old Samuel Martin
property on 26 May 1892 and remained there until 1916 when it was moved
one-half mile west where it remained in service until 15 Oct 1923. All the
postmasters in Agnes were named Pearce. There was William Pearce, John P.
Pearce, Margaret E. Pearce, and later, John P. Pearce again.
-A post office in Hinton later became known as Rich's Mill after a mill
owner named Charles Rich. Rich's Mill later became the town of Richton.
-The town of Barbara was named after Barbara J. Thomas, it’s first
postmaster.
-The town of Griffin was named after William C. Griffin, prominent
landowner, cattle rancher and first postmaster.
-The Neely postmaster was John Prentis Griffin, son of
William C. Griffin, who was the postmaster of Griffin.
