A Short explanation of Sections
Return to History Page or Home Page
Townships run south to north, with the the lower number
being south to the higher numbers, and the Range numbers run west
to east with the higher numbers being to the east.
Within each Township/Range area are the sections.
The wording might be a bit different, but the result is the same:
the discriptive term is given in directive verbage. The south half of the
east half of the southwest quarter in this drawing is unlabled..........it
could be divided up more, but I think you got the idea.
One can calculate the distance between points by remembering
that a section is one mile square. A half section would be one half of a
mile, a quarter section, therefore, would be a quarter mile.
